Follow Homicide Detective Allan Stanton through the toughest cases of his career.
Three books in one:
Grave Situation (Book 1) - Halifax cop Allan Stanton is a troubled homicide detective who has lost everything, including his family and his sense of justice. When he finally decides to leave the force and start over, he's assigned a string of murders that all bear the signs of a serial killer collecting trophies. As Stanton unravels each grisly crime scene, the mounting evidence points uncomfortably close to him and a case unlike anything he's ever seen.
One Kill Away (Book 2) - In this sequel to Grave Situation, Detective Allan Stanton has walked away from his job to reconnect with his young son--until a killer starts methodically carving his way through the city's underbelly. His ex-partner needs help, and Stanton reluctantly returns. The killer is definitely working through a list of victims, and he's leaving cryptic clues at his grisly crime scenes. Are they there to confuse the police? Or is there something more to them? As Stanton unravels this shocking central mystery, he becomes the target of an unexpected enemy--those next on the killer's list.
Sorrowful Road (Book 3) - Detective Stanton has been haunted for the last year by one case he couldn't close: the brutal murder of a pretty twenty-two-year-old in Point Pleasant Park. On the anniversary of her death, the body of another young woman is found. The MO suggests the same person killed them both, but the long gap between murders is unusual for a serial killer. Fellow detective Audra Price joins Stanton in the search for this ruthless predator. But neither is prepared to handle such a unique brand of psychopath. Over a decade of unsolved case files turn up a swath of carnage, cut all across Canada with bone-chilling efficiency. The only way to bring justice to the victims is by following the most horrifying trail of their careers--to a monster who knows he's being hunted.
Alex MacLean is the author of the Detective Allan Stanton mysteries—Grave Situation, One Kill Away, Sorrowful Road, Into Thin Air, and The Quiet That Followed—with a sixth on the way. He is also the author of The Banished, a historical novel of the Acadian expulsion.
MacLean writes in a very methodical and pragmatic manner. He introduces his heroes & characters evolving them throughout each book. Introducing the killer in each book by a deep personalization of the minute details each killer creates in his/her victims, adds a degree of fear to the reader, yet moved the story along. You visit the cops in their personal settings with detailed accuracy and their inner demons. The trilogy is well thought out and provides good reading.
SORROWFUL ROAD Finding with authors that are not use to American ways of writing or starting a book, one need to read more before deciding to read it or not. We have a killer, who picked his victims for no reason, so clues to link cases together there was none.Stranton and Price were good lead characters. their police protocol was detailed and timely fitting in. A killer that was broken, on a hike he may kill for the thrill of just doing. Unusual and the setting of Halifax. Good box set
I'm pretty sure these wouldn't work well independently. I finished them in the hopes they'd improve. The third was probably the best of them but it relied heavily on the first two. The first was slow and heavy reading. Didn't really come together. The second had two many threads and felt disjointed. The third brought things together better but still felt like it dragged a lot.
I enjoyed the trilogy very much The authors use of following the mind set and background of the evil murderers in each book was disconcerting at first but did add to the story line. The fact that the two main detectives had issues we can all speak to in one way or another was refreshing. I liked both of and was invested in their roles. The Canadian location interested me in many ways. The plot in each book moved quickly and kept you interested as well as involved.
Page turner, a look into the life of a cop(detective) and his partner that are investigating homicides in Canada, all while trying to maintain a family life.
The stress of the job, serial killers, family issues make this a believable trilogy. I will be looking for this author again! I enjoyed taking this journey with him.
The book is well written and very well researched. Exceptional and accurate description of locales. Having traveled across Canada and having stayed at so many of the provincial parks, rendered the book even more interesting. Details of actual past crimes in Canada also add to the book. The three books must be read in order.
Best read as a set in order. Tempted to give up part way through the first but glad in the end that I pressed on. Stanton came alive as the books went on and the stories developed his character . An interesting style of writing with "take outs" that are not always clear to follow but in the end you get used to them and they add to the background. Recommend to you.
The three stories in this set of books made for an excellent read. Told from the detectives point of view, they are at times quite dark, as he struggles with the emotional and mental fall out of his job. The solving of the crimes leads to the start of a resolution for him and closure for some families of the vicims
I was very impressed with these 3 books. Alex MacLean kept the ending pretty close to his chest, but thankfully, through it all, the good guys won. Be prepared for reading late into the night...
INTRIGUEING premise, police persistence following up tiny details resulting in finally rooting out the culprit! Very descriptive of atmosphere and Canadian scenery.
I had not read this author’s books before this trilogy. I was very impressed. The story lines are good, characters are believable, and I will look for more books by this author.
Stanton is a veteran police. Concerned for victim , family and community what he has witnessed is wearing on him. When a serial killer is recognized the hunt becomes personal and exhausting.
If you love a murder mystery and how it takes it toll those who investigate the crimes, then this is the book for you. If follows Allen Stanton a homicide detective who is haunted by the crime that isn’t solved.

The extreme underbelly of being a homicide detective is glaringly exposed in horrifying detail. How can humans do what they do to each other? Only true justice winning out over blatant evil brings a small measure of hope.
One of the most suspense filled books I ever read. So well written it was easy to get inside the stories and feel as if you were living it with the characters.
This was an easy read and suspenseful. The stories offered a good change up between characters and their lives it wasn’t just about one story with one character.
I really enjoyed these books kept me entertained they were hard to put down but the chapter's were short great story not to scary hope you enjoy it too
If you enjoy stretching your imagination and rolling in adrenaline, then this is for you. Three books that share common elements, and create a sense of accomplishment when they are read.
