My daughter, Randie, and I were recently in Prague where we learned about 16th century Jewish Rabbi Loew who reportedly created Golem from clay from the banks of the Vitava River and brought it to life through rituals and Hebrew incantations to defend the Prague ghetto from anti-Semitic attacks and pogroms. It was neat to see the tombstone of Rabbi Loew in the Old Jewish Cemetery in Prague, and then, when I got home, to read this book that my friend, Shawnda Bishop had bought when she was in that city.

I got this book in Prague, and true to its origin, its greatest strength is in its artwork, featuring that old-timey cold-war-esque style of drawing.

Gentler than the versions I know, but still captures the unearthly feel of 'the city of stars and mandrakes'.
