THE STORY OF US:
PRESENT DAY: A night that’s mean’t to be a night of celebration of their One Year Wedding Anniversary is anything but because Alieya Tavare is sitting at home alone in their cramped apartment with only their cat to keep her company, lonely, and thinking of the past and where it all fell down around their ears, Maverick yet again at the office working late where he’s been working for the last twenty five months.
THIS ISN’T HOW IT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE
I want him to come home and whisper that this is only a small moment in time and it won’t last forever.
Dinner going cold in the oven, to falling asleep with her trusty cat to waking up by the doorbell chiming at 1.53am and a lone police officer stating that there had been an accident involving Maverick
We were carefree and happy and naive. Before school, before life, before these last six months. How quickly that all crashed around us.
PAST: On holiday in Cancun Ali aka Alieya is holidaying with her bestie when enjoying the freedom of being single and dipping into the waters she’s stung by a jellyfish and in excruciating pain that needs immediate attention and that comes in the form of Maverick peeing on her leg. A unique hilarious encounter of how these two first met had me in stitches. These two only had one speed and that was fast, they met, they crushed, they liked, they fell in love, a quick fire engagement, living together, to marriage in a matter of weeks, months. But they were the happiest they had ever been, they didn’t fall under any normal labels, their relationship was what it was.
I think about the happy moments Man and I shared. Our time in Cancun. The dance under the stars. His smile. His silly pet name for me ( Jellysnack ) That was us. The whole, take on the world, in love us. The us before we broke.
Flits from Part to Present effortlessly
This was a journey of self discovery, life can throw many curveballs, some traffic others life changing, weither we can roll with the punches and come out on the other side as a better and stronger person constitutes what this book is about. Alieya and Maverick went through varying degrees of ups and downs in their relationship, the late nights he had to work at the office to make a better life for them both, which took it’s toll on not only on their relationship but Alieya was the one who suffered and felt like she was in a one way relationship, add in a tragic event which could’ve had far worse consequences they came out of it better and stronger for it as a couple. Through all of that though their love always shined through in techno colour.
A heartbreaking realistic, truly beautifully well written story.

Top Ten of 2017. I already know this.
I've read every one of D. Nichole's books, and they're all wonderful. But with The Story of Us, the author has hit a new level. The writing is flawless and to the point, while hitting the reader right in the heart and the tear ducts every step of the way.
Was Love Always, Kate, your kind of book? How about Me Before You? The Story of Us is nothing like these two, and yet they have so much in common. As contradictory as that sounds, you'll soon see what I mean.

They shape us. Our lives are built of them. Moments that we forget as soon as it has passed. Moments we do our hardest to forget. The ones we wished to change. And the moments we want back, the ones we never want to forget. Our moments shape who we are, who we will become. This book is built on moments. The past and present interwoven, and together they tell the truly beautiful story of Ali and Mav.
D. Nichole King has an incredible ability to makes her characters come alive, to make you feel with them, laugh when they are happy, and cry when they are sad. When they hurt, you hurt. So I fully went into this book expecting to be gutted and emotionally wrecked, like I was while reading Love Always, Kate, well the entire series really. Don’t get me wrong, there are plenty of heartbreaking and angsty moments in this book. But I wasn’t gutted by them. And I have to admit I’m a bit relieved by that.
I loved this book and I was hooked from the first page. It’s got the one thing that makes a book great – genuine people, people you can relate to. People with flaws and baggage. People that aren’t perfect. It also had a truly beautiful love story. From the very beginning you could feel the connection between Ali and Mav. You can tell that was real, that they were it for each other, and I’m not talking about any kind of insta-love here, just a genuine and life-long connection. Besides, they were a bit too busy for love at first sight. And then there were the revenge plotting. I’m not saying more; let’s just say that I had some Friends flashbacks. ;)
So throughout this book, we follow Ali and Mav, from when they first met, how they fell in love. Though ups and downs, though the colours and darkness of their lives. We sit vigil with Ali, beside Mav’s hospital bed, waiting and hoping for good news. That maybe, just maybe there will be light and colours again. That their story might not end just yet. Hoping for another chance to make things right again.

I'll try to keep this review short and to the point for those 3 people who are going to read it. Once upon a time, I read a book that was classified as "romance" but really should have been sold at Home Depot since it ended up being a home improvement book. I feel just as duped with this one. This one is classified as "romance" as well yet in reality is more of an art book.
The entire book is more about hues, colors and shades than the story of them. It's so bad, that the author even included a list of colors and their meaning at the end of the book.
Even speed reading didn't help. And don't get me started on Ali! I couldn't stand her. How is it OK that she didn't call his parents??? It's NOT! And as much as I did love Maverick, it still was not enough to overcome all the other nonsense of this book.
Yes, this is me keeping it short because in reality I want to keep ranting ;)

When I read THE STORY OF US by D. Nichole King all I could think about was … She must have experienced something like this or know someone who has.
There is no way you could write something like this in such a way without having the misfortune of a personal experience.
Because of the very special way the story is told basically everything about this story hurt. And it hurt a lot. It felt so real … this story could be you, me, anybody.
At times again I thought that I will hopefully never find myself in such a situation. But in the blink of an eye anything can change and and the only hope is that when it happens you will have no regrets.
We walk through little more than 2 years in the life of the leading characters – we follow their building relationship, in a “now and then kind” of telling.
With the focus and starting point of the now where we find them at the crossroads from several points of views that will be revealed during reading.
The setting is gut-wrenching and I felt that hart and cold steel cramp around my body that would not let me breath at times.
One session deep into the night was all it took for me to finish this book as I could not find a point where I was comfortable enough to stop reading to go to sleep.
That being said … please feel this book as much as I did …

Great concept
Could have been better. I loved the story line and the concept of this book. However it was a little weird for me that the main character and her husband look to the best friend for advice. Her depression should have been more of a focus Bc she had a serious mental illness and painting fixed it? Not exactly realistic at all. This could have been so emotional and it was cold. Too many color references it was overdone. Not sure I will read another book by this author.

The Story of Us is the first 5 star read of 2017! It was so real and raw and amazingly written. I was in tears and loving it for a lot of the book. All I kept thinks was, this could be me. I could be Alieya. She was a character you can relate to. She could be your best friend, your sister or you.
Let's back up a little. The Story Of Us is the love story and everything in between of Alieya and Maverick. They meet on vacation and fall in love. We follow their love story progress from a vacation fling to changing their whole loves for each other. Just like a real love story, life gets in the way of living a happily ever after. You need to work for it and keep it going. Maverick and Alieya have some obstacles over come. And they do it together because of their love and devotion to each other.
I don't want to say too much and give this one away, because I thought it was a phenomenal story with a beautiful life lesson and amazing writing. I was blown away by this book. Sometimes, a book like this makes you realize wheat normal is. I needed this book and it made me see all I have in my life too.
This was a 5 star read, hands down!

Once I started reading this book, I couldn't put it down until I finished it (even at the risk of getting fired from my job). I was instantly sucked in and I wanted to know what was going to happen with Ali and Mav. The Story of Us walks you through happiness, heartache, and gut wrenching pain. I felt everything the characters experienced as if I was living the story with them. I never cried when reading until I started reading D. Nichole King's books. She has a way of making you feel everything as if it was you and not characters in a story. I honestly cannot give this book enough stars for how much I enjoyed reading it.

“What I’m trying to say is that happy endings don’t happen without unhappy middles.”
Love is messy. There’s no escaping that. Relationships are hard. The deeper you’re in it with someone, allowing yourself to be vulnerable, showing them every facet of yourself and having them do the same with you, it’s incredible but no doubt, one of the hardest things most people will ever face.
People often say that nothing worth having is ever easy, and I’m a believer of that. And there’s no greater showing of that then in the pages of this novel.
The way Maverick and Ali meet, its so incredibly easy. Having already lived through and come out the other side of a relationship gone bad, it’s as close to easy as it seems to get for Ali, and as far as pictures of perfection go in terms of the right people for each other, Maverick is her one. The world really is their oyster and her life really does change from shades of gray and into the most vibrant of colors.
Her dreams and reality becoming one.
The Story of Us is one of those books that as you read, you can easily see being made into a movie. It’s like a picture (which given what Ali wants to do with her life couldn’t be more fitting), brought to life. Every scene unfolding in perfect symmetry and showing you not only what we all seem to love about love, but also the cold reality of what happens when time, life and other things happen once we’ve found it.
It’s not always pretty, and that, given the events that take place in the story, is what made it so enjoyable. It really is as the line quoted above from the novel states. No happy ending worth having will be free and easy and without complication. It won’t be without trials and tribulations determined to break you. And let me tell you, this book had that and more.
As the book deviated back and forth from present day to the early stages of them meeting and falling in love, leading straight into the present and then into the future at the end, I was with this couple every step of the way. As Ali came to terms with what had become her new reality, the realizations she made, the things she wished she could have gone back and said. I couldn’t put it down. I couldn’t walk away.
Much like Ali in this story, I couldn’t give up on them and I think if you take a chance on this story, really delve into the emotional rollercoaster of reality that it is at times, you won’t be able to give up on them either.
I got to experience one of the best things about romance, about books and about life as I read this story and no matter what book I move on to next after this one, it’s going to stay with me forever. The same way Ali and Maverick will.
My thanks to the author and all others involved in letting me read this story before official release. This journey, it’s one I’ll carry with me always.

The Story of Us took my breath away. I am still in awe of d. Nichole King’s writing. It was just magnificent. Reading this story, about how a couple who loved so much, so deeply torn apart, leading to the point of no return. Almost.
It took one moment, one tragedy, to turn their lives upside down.
The emotions were just raw, heartbreaking but mostly so realistic. Alieya and Maverick. One guarded and the other spontaneous. Their story may not look like conventional and it was really interesting.
They fell in love fast and hard. Their story was like a splash of color, revealing a vibrant and passionate love, spontaneous and so full of life. How the bright and shining colors faded away into the grey and sad ones?
Alternating with the present and glimpse of their past, we put the pieces together of this couple. From their first encounter, hopes and fears, happy and sad moments, until the time they slowly and terribly torn apart, when their love became almost secondary, taken for granted.
Reading how they met just melt my heart, so refreshing and passionate. Maybe a bit insane for two people who barely known each other but they worked for it. And it was beautiful.
Reading their slow and heartbreaking destruction of everything they built together was painful. I was so desperately rooting for them. To find their way back to home, where they belong.

4.5 Cherish The Moment Stars
This is an honest review in exchange for an ARC.
I had previously read 3 of D. Nichole King's books and I had absolutely adored them so the bar was set very high for The Story of Us. I shouldn't have been concerned, because this book exceeded every expectation I had!
By the time I had finished the first chapter I was completely enthralled and I stayed that way throughout the entire book. As usual, I fell head over heels in love with Nicole King's hero. Maverick was perfect without being saccharine sweet and the heroine Ali was likeable and relatable.
Their love story is told in a unique and engaging way that leaves you begging for the next chapter. I loved the approach Nicole King took in structuring this story. It is almost like each chapter has its own cliffhanger. The message this book conveys so beautifully is one we all need to hear; be mindful of what you say and don't say to the people you love because there is no guarantee that you will ever have the chance to tell them anything else. Love is precious and while it very, very fragile and can be gone in an instant - it can also last an eternity.
Don't miss out on Mav and Ali's amazing love story. I know I'm already missing them!

Heartbreakingly wonderful. It shows what life can throw at us. The good, the bad and the ugly. You will need tissues while reading. I felt like I was living it with Maverick and Ali.

First I want to say I went into this book knowing nothing about this book but the Author and the title, I was blessed with the honor of receiving an ARC. D. Nichole King is one of my go to authors, her words flow like magic and her love of her characters goes on for days.
The story of us is so touching and remarkably relatable, the characters aren't perfect they are flawed and their flaws make them even better.
The love you feel through out the book between the characters made me feel warm and loved. The love scenes are beautifully written and tastefully done.
One of the things I loved the most is while you get to be in the present day you get the back story the whole way through. I never felt like I was missing anything.
At the end I didn't feel like there was anything left unsaid. This book is a must read for those who love, real life flawed not perfect but perfect for them love.

What an amazing book!
This story was intense and heartbreaking. If it wasn't for all the sweet flashbacks mixed in I would have needed to take a break to get through it. I love the way the Author mixed in the emotional moments with the beautiful moments. I couldn't put it down! I definitely recommend you read this book if you haven't yet.

I was already a D. Nichole King fan (Like HUGE fan), so I want into this book with high expectations. Yeah...they were met and exceeded. This book is just a beautiful book about love, about the fact that falling is easy and hard at the same time. The scariest and the safest thing you'll ever do. That after you fall, life gets complicated and messy while being beautiful and amazing. This book reminds you that every day matters and things can change in the blink of an eye.
This book did exactly what I love books to do....it made me feel all the feelings. I laughed and swooned and cried and cheered. Happy, sad, scared, excited...they all come into play here. But more than anything, this book made me think about everyday, about how I treat people and what I value.
The characters were real and exceptional at the same time. It was great to read a book with characters that felt like people I could meet IRL. Maverick was just about as swoon-worthy as they come, I fell for him within a few pages of meeting him. Alieya is a college student and an artist and still a little shell-shocked and gun-shy from the end of a long term relationship. Everything about her is just incredibly real. Her reactions would be my reactions, I just understood her. Some of the other characters were great too, especially Finley, Alieya's best friend. She was a great addition and I would actually love to read her story one of these days.
I think what set this book apart is the way D writes emotion. It's beautiful and crystal clear, everything on the page for you to experience with the characters. Honestly...I will read everything this author writes and I will likely read this book again and again.

4.5 Phenomenal Stars
What an absolutely phenomenal read this was. I knew this author would do an amazing job of this story the moment I read the synopsis. I love this authors writing, she writes her stories always so beautifully sucking you in right from the very start. She tends to break your heart but oh how she puts it all back together to heal it all back up.
This one was written in both past and present, alternating back and forth and normally I don't enjoy a story being told this way but u absolutely loved this one and it was told so well in this way.
Ali and Mav met by chance and immediately it grew into so much more but as we read this one we see tragedy has struck them and the question is will they survive it. This is not the typical romance but oh how I lived their story.
This is a book that not only su JD you completely into their story, to the point you can't put this one down and inhale it in a day but it's the type of story that makes you also step back and take a look at your own life and truly stop to appreciate it. This book truly made me internally struggle, I couldn't inhale it fast enough but had to tryto make myself slow down to truly savour every last word, it was just that amazing.
I was a huge fan before I picked this one up but now having read this one, I have become an even bigger fan and she will always be a one click for me!

My first book by D. Nichole King and I am hooked!!!
This read was phenomenal! The story of Maverick and Alieya touched upon all my emotions. The way the story unfolded was stunning!
This read is so much more than a romance story, but it's best to go in blindly and experience it!

That was the perfect ending and the perfect phrase because everything about it was completely true! I loved The Story Of Us. It was beautiful, heartbreaking and the most wonderful story. I'm so glad I didn't miss a second of it- of them! Maverick and Alieya had me going through every emotion while reading their journey. They shared so much love, laughter, and heartache, and I felt it as if it were my own! This story will stay with me forever, and I know if you give it a try, it'll stay with you forever as well!

Breathtaking!
Heartbreaking and heartmending.
The realities of life are hard to write, and even harder to make enjoyable. This was torture in terms of waiting for the ending, but the whole thing was a rainbow of emotion, in a good way, in a sad way, in a thrilling way. It's a story of "How did we get here?" but everyone has been "here" so it's so easy to understand the highs and lows. And the characters make it so enjoyable you forget about everything but them and their lives wrapped around eachother.
I say rainbow, because colors are a huge part of the story. Every feeling, has a color. It's such a wonderful touch to an already touching story.
I don't want to say much more other than how love is a powerful thing.

New author for me. I loved her writing style, the story and the characters. I was drawn right in and thought it was a beautiful story.
We get to meet Maverick and Alieya and tag along as their relationship starts and grows, and as they face speed bumps to their HEA. The writing is so good i felt as if I was right there with the characters. I loved how the story alternated throughout from the present to the past. We are able to see how their relationship started (funny moment) and are also kept on the edge of our seat wondering what's about to happen next.

Wow... just wow! I read this book in one sitting. I couldn't put it down! The characters were real. Gritty. Flawed. Perfect for each other. The plot was well thought out and well-written; my only criticism would be that I could have used just a little more before the epilogue (it works quite well as is, just a preference for me). Told in alternating present and past (something that can be challenging to red, but isn't in the least), this novel was refreshing! I look forward to more from this author. Highly recommend!!

This book was so amazing. I could see it being someone's true life story. Moving, touching, the feels. This is one everyone should read. I'm not great at reviews, to put down in words exactly how I feel ( that's why I'm a reader not a writer) but this book was so good. Really truly. So super happy that I got to read it. Thank you for a great piece of work!

What can I say about this book? It's heartbreaking. It's breathtaking. It's beautiful. It makes you feel happy, sad, and scared. It sucks you in, and makes you hope. I loved it. It's such a wonderful story. Ali and Mav are perfect for each other, even in the trials of their relationship. This is a 5 star, must read, in my opinion.
