The Witch

When zombies are entranced by a wicked wizard, nothing will ever be the same…

When a courageous human girl named Alex who always does the right thing wakes up, things have certainly changed. Her little town has been pillaged, and when she looks in the mirror, she is shocked to realize that she is now a zombie! To her chagrin, the only other survivor is Steve, her arrogant yet kind hearted new partner in crime.

Alex and Steve have to get to the bottom of what happened – and quick. Things seem to be getting weirder and weirder. Bravely maneuvering their way through entranced zombies, giant spiders, and other creepy creatures, Alex and Steve finally come upon the house of a kindly witch – whose brother happened to have enslaved the zombies that are wreaking havoc. Before they part ways with the witch, she reveals to Alex it is possible for them to become human again. Petulant Steve is more concerned about getting revenge on the wizard for causing such destruction.

What will Alex do? Read “The Witch” to see if she chooses to restore her humanity, or fight for the rest of it.

Vivacious and spirited, this book will have any child on the edge of their seat – even the most stubborn non reader you know!

"This was more than just good entertainment for kids, this was the spark needed for my son to finally consider expanding his horizons beyond just an Xbox controller." -Matt Walterson (Reader from The Dad's Network)

"Grab yourself a three brain pizza and read all about wimpy teenage zombie Z. Wimpy Zombie Minecraft Diary is my new favorite Minecraft book. I've read several other Minecraft books out there and some are not very good and have very poor plots. This book is composed of 5 books and they all have really great developed plots and themes." -M.Meza (Amazon Top 1000 Reviewer)

All Alex remembers is the life she used to have as a human. But know she's a zombie and she can't figure out how she got that way. Know she's on a quest to find out what happened to her get revenge on who did this to her and destroyed her home.

Plot

Diary of a Zombie Alex: The Witch (long title, huh?) is a Minecraft story for children. From what I understand, it follows a Minecraft character named Alex, who has been turned into a zombie. Her goal is to find out what happened to her and get revenge. The book is short and made for children, so nothing too detailed happens. But there is a plot here. Revenge! And adventure, let’s not forget.

Writing

The writing is very well done. It’s written as Alex’s diary, and her working her way through the land and on towards her adventure. I can’t say the diary framing worked, as I can’t think of anybody that would write a diary in this way. Despite the framing device and its shortcomings, the book was wonderfully written. Punctuation, grammar, sentence structure; these things were all well edited. The book is given good pace despite being so short, and there are very hilarious moments. Let it not be said that this book wasn’t well written.

Characters

The main character is Alex, and she has an easy to see personality from the beginning of the book. She’s a character that tries and succeeds in being strong. She may have a bit of a temper, especially with regards to Steve, but she is also resourceful and a practical thinker. I enjoyed her.
Steve is a minor character compared to Alex. He too has his own distinct personality, even though the diary is from Alex’s point of view. They are two separate entities with clear differences between them, and I can very much appreciate that, as a lot of books either give all characters one personality or all of them no personality.

Things I Liked

Besides knowing the game looks pixel-y, I know absolutely nothing about Minecraft. And yet, I was able to enjoy the book easily. There wasn’t anything too jarring to someone not involved with Minecraft to where it would mess up or ruin your reading of the book.

Things I Didn't Like

I don’t like diaries as book because few authors can write realistic diaries. Diary of a Zombie Alex: The Witch wasn’t ruined because it was technically a diary, but I still don’t like diary books. This isn’t necessarily something I didn’t like, but something I was rather indifferent towards.

Diversity

Alex, the main character, is a girl. None of the character are given any races or anything, and I don’t know how Minecraft humans work, so I guess the reader can assume what they want?

Overall

I know nothing about Minecraft, and I am well above the targeted audience’s age for this book. This isn’t a book I’d pick up on my own because of these two reasons. But I can’t say reading it was a bad experience. I genuinely found parts of the book funny, and it wasn’t a long read, so I can say I liked the book. I won’t be picking up the other books, as I don’t have any further interest in the series (once again because of the reasons above) but I enjoyed this book.
If you are worried your lack of knowledge about Minecraft will make you unable to understand the book, no need to. I like the book, and I imagine a child interested Minecraft will enjoy it even more so.

This is by far my favorite book that I've read from M.C. Steve! It was relatable from the very first line where Alex has a killer headache (I've had migraines for years), all the way to the end where she (I also really liked that this story features a girl, though with a name like Alex I didn't immediately realize that) departs from Steve, with whom she has a sibling-like relationship.
This one was also funnier than the other ones I've read. My favorite line? "What kind of monster tries to hurt a girl's feet? A really short one, maybe" (It's from the Day 4 chapter). The author probably didn't intend it this way, but I think it makes a great joke, which I used to make my family (and myself, of course) laugh.
I also want to say that the conclusion was good - I was a little disappointed with the last book I read from M.C. Steve because it suddenly ended right as I was really getting into it, but this one has the classic wind-down with a setup for another book, so I'm happy with it.
The one thing I would suggest be changed is how often Alex says that she'll write tomorrow. She said that at the end of nearly every chapter, if not every chapter, and considering how short most of the chapters are, it was a little too much. Doesn't take away from the story, though, so it's not a huge issue.

She wants to find her family and friends, and be human again, but only manages to end up with an annoying boy named Steve. Together they learn how to survive the dangers they meet, get along with one another and make the best of it. Both boys and girls will enjoy sharing this adventure with them.
