Before Captain Hook annihilated England, before the Lost City was built underground, before Gwen stole his heart, Pete was a just boy living among the shadows. Determined to get himself and his sister out the rundown orphanage, Pete finds a solution in the seedy underbelly of London, a deadly place of scamps and thieves where survival is determined by cunning skill and bareknuckle bravery. But then one night, everything changes . . .
In this dark reimagining of the original Lost Boy, Wendy Spinale weaves a stunning story of courage and heartbreak, loss and redemption as one boy is forced to face his past... and his future.
Wendy is the author of the Everland series. She is a former Disneyland actress and online journalist. She currently resides in California with her three sons, two dogs, a chinchilla, and hamster.
This thing has been sitting on my kindle for a long time now. I own Everland as well but keep postponing reading it. I decided to knock out this little prequel novella simply because I needed the pages for a challenge on GR and was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it.
I love retellings and Peter Pan is one of my favorite childhood stories, but a lot of the retellings I've come across for it have pretty bad reviews or I just couldn't get into. So I was understandably hesitant with this. I really dig the almost dystopian type twist that has been put on the story. This was a good origins novella and set up the world well considering how short it is. Character development was decent for the limited page time as well.
As if my December TBR wasn't already outta control, now I'm tempted to try to squeeze book one in as well.......
I really enjoyed this book. I loved seeing all the relationships between the characters develop. Had I read this book before Everland it would have increased the star rating I gave it. With seeing the background of the characters in this book it prepares you for Everland. Great read!
This is a story about Pete and his sister; they lose their parents in an accident which leaves his sister Gabrielle in a wheelchair. They stay in a orphanage home and Pete has a secret job he keeps from everyone every night which dubs him the nick name "Lost Boy".
In this very short read Pete is dealt with a lot of loss. I understand that the book is a novella and things need to somewhat be rushed in order to set us up for the next actual book so I won't fault the progress of the loss in this read.
When London gets blow up to bits by creatures no one's ever seen before leaving the city littered with dead bodies and lost children, Pete takes it on himself with the help of a few friends to gather the children up and build a secret underground city.
I'm not exactly sure how they pulled this off tbh but I'm not gonna question it either.
Pete seemed like a very conflicted soul and I can honestly see why. He was left to care for his sister all on his own at a young age and after losing everyone he loved I would be a little out of whack as well. But I admire that despite that he still wanted to care for others and that he did everything he could within his power to do so.
I'm excited to dive into the first book of this series to see where Pete's adventures lands him next!
{My thoughts} – I will admit I read this prequel after I read the first book. This prequel helped me to better understand Pete and the storyline. It introduced all the main characters in a more effective manner.
In this prequel you learn what happened to Pete and his family. It also helps you to better understand all the main characters and the reason for their personalities.
I enjoyed reading it and think that anyone else that is interested in Peter Pan remakes will enjoy it as well. I do however recommend reading it before reading the first book. It will help you better understand the first book on so many levels.
So, glad I got to finally read this one now. I love this series, the Dystopia, Steampunk take on Peter Pan's story really got me. It turned out so cool, and I'm so glade I got to read a bit about Pete's life before we met him in 'Everland'. I liked getting the chance to meet Gabby, even if it was for just half the of the story, and seeing just how much Pete did care for her. Also, Pete meeting his crew and gathering the Lost Kids to building the Lost City was all worth it. Really loved this little insight to the story.
This definitely was sad! I loved seeing Pete before Everland takes place and how he met his Lost Boys. Seeing how he lost people he loved and took charge to keep others from losing people they love made me like Pete even more. There were no innuendos, or language that I can recall, but it did get violent but nothing overly gorey. This was pretty short, so I kinda wanted more but it was very nice to get the insight of everything. Age recommendation: 13+
It took me so long to get my hands on this, but I'm so glad I was finally able to! Unfortunately this novella was only 67 pages, I really wish it was longer. I live for this series! XD
The novella itself wasn't much; it only gave a few more details about Pete and how he founded the lost city, but that was about it.
I'd love it if the author wrote more novellas, like one about Doc's past, Gwen's story, or Hook's backstory. I would absolutely love reading those!
I really can't wait to dive into ever after reading the ground work. Everyone from Peter to Captain Hook makes an appearance in the steampunk, post apocalypse, world formerly known as London
This was a very interesting prequel novella into the story of Peter Pan, living in the alternate London. The story itself is very sad and made me feel for the characters. I will definitely continue on and start with Everland Trilogy!
This put many pieces together for me in understanding relationships and rolls in this series. It would have helped to read it before I read the rest of the series.
In a prequel to the Everland series we learn how Pete became the leader of the lost boys.
He and his twin sister, Gabrielle, are orphans and live in the children's home. Pete is taking every opportunity he can to get money together to be able to move them out on their own. One day they meet a girl named, Annabella, in the park. She gives them some of her lunch. They leave to get home before curfew.
That is the night of the bombs. The night that the Marauders come from Germany and change England forever.
I loved this short book about Pete and his backstory, as well as a couple of other important characters, with a different take on retelling the story of Peter Pan.
It was great to get to know the character better and understand where his story began and how it shaped him, and it's all so sad!
I love the whole dystopian vibe to it (which is one of my favourite genres) and I'm really getting a feel for steampunk-themed books too. It's a great combination. I read Everland before this one, but if I could make a suggestion, first read this one before moving to Everland, it gives a lot of insight into characters as well as understanding about the world the characters are living in.
