A Journey with John: The 50 Day Bible Challenge

Rate this book
The Gospel of John starts with poetry and moves through the great story of Jesus’ ministry, death, and resurrection with literary flair and deeply theological underpinnings. John focuses on Jesus’ last years of life—and is the only gospel to record the story of Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead and the risen Savior's appearance to Mary Magdalene at the tomb. The Gospel of John also contains perhaps the most-quoted scripture verse of “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life.” Join A Journey with John with fifty days of scripture, meditations, and prayers written by dynamic spiritual leaders from across the United States and around the world. A Journey with John is part of the 50 Day Bible series, which includes Matthew, Mark, and Luke, and is an extension of The Bible Challenge, a global initiative to encourage daily engagement with the Word of God.

Whether you are seeking a daily spiritual discipline or just want to better understand this important Gospel, this book is ideal.

The Gospel According to John is divided into 50 daily readings from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible. Each is accompanied by a short reflection, a question or two and a prayer. The reflections/questions/prayers are written by leading Anglicans worldwide and offer thought-provoking and fascinating interpretations on the day's lesson.

Each day's reading takes between five and 10 minutes, making this an accessible spiritual discipline for even the busiest among us.

Bonus: If you enjoy this, the publisher, Forward Movement, has a 50-day challenge for the other three Gospels, the Acts of the Apostles, and one titled "The Way of Love Bible Challenge," which draws on selected readings from both the Hebrew scriptures and the New Testament.

The Reflections and questions for the last week in this book of scripture meditations, so closely parallels the disruption, fears, and chaos COVID 19 brings with it, the questions may be answered in terms of what was happening in the hearts and minds of Jesus’ disciples as well as our own in these disorienting times. I’m surprised by gratitude for having completed the last week of readings “late,” as it now seems these came at the best possible time.
