"Shadows by Angie Martin is a fresh and frightening trek into the world of psychological horror... Martin writes horror and violence, and fear and loathing with poetic shock , making me take in breath and banish chills... All in all, I’d say that Angie Martin’s Shadows hits a ghastly home run. I found my mind taking each story to the next thought, the next scene, the next awful problem. In Shadows, I didn’t just read a tale and move on; I couldn’t. Martin is a genius at placing readers inside the head of the frightened person and then keeping them there. Angie Martin, though she advises that Shadows is her first visit to the horror genre, writes it like she’s been doing it for a very long time. Keep an eye on this author. She’s going places ."

I live in the Inland Empire area of California with my husband and beloved pets. I also have sons off paving their own way in the world. I grew up in Wichita, Kansas and have lived all over the United States.
I have released several novels in the suspense/thriller, paranormal/supernatural thriller, and horror genres. I also have poetry and short story collections and have contributed short stories to multiple anthologies. Conduit has earned Bestseller on Amazon in the US and UK. Conduit, The Boys Club, and Chrysalis have all won highly respected awards, while Conduit, The Boys Club, and False Security have also had blogger and reader-voted awards bestowed upon them.
As a reader first, writer second, I love to discover new authors. My entire life has revolved around imaginary worlds contained within the covers of a book. My aunt introduced me to Stephen King and a little book called Christine in eighth grade, and my life was never the same. As a geek-extraordinaire, I love comics and graphic novels, and also review those, along with the occasional movie and book, as a guest contributor for Fanbase Press.
Though I rarely read horror these days, there was a time that it was almost all I read. These stories, especially The First Step, co-written with Marisa Oldham, rival any of the masters.
Short stories are also an area that is not usually at the top of my reading favorites, but I have always felt that the horror genre is best suited for them. Each of these six stories make that point for me. Leaving you with more questions than answers, horror stories are always made more chilling when we have to fill in the details and/or aftermath with our own imagination. What could be more frightening than inserting your own secret fears into the equation? Several stories in this collection leave you perfectly set to do just that, most notably for me the first story in the book, sharing the title of the collection, Shadows.
Shadows tells the story of a very depressed woman, who awakes after an attempted suicide in a psychiatric hospital. But some things just don't add up or feel quite right. You will never guess just how wrong they are before the last couple of paragraphs. I am still stumbling around with questions and eerie possibilities with this one.
Reflection - as a former professional photographer myself, this one quickly drew me in and freaked me out deeply. Another that left the door open to so many possibilities, none of them particularly pleasant. Not a single hesitation to award it 5 stars though.
Sold - I cannot shake the feeling that I had read this one before, but that didn't keep me from reading each word again, with chills of what I was pretty sure was the outcome. In honesty, it is not my favorite of the collection, but that has no effect on the impact it has. It may hit on some seemingly cheesy horror themes (serial killer, ghost hunters, ouija board, and on Halloween) but they are presented in unexpected ways and supplemented by chilling surprises that aren't as common. Unanswered questions will follow you after you have left the last line as well.
Flawless - As truly unique as it is unequivocally....just....odd, unexpected, weird, creepy and almost guiltily thought provoking. This one claws at all the reasons that Angie Martin is a force to be reckoned with when armed with a pen. I am still puzzling possibilities on this one. The epitome of short story perfection....just enough of a glimpse to leave you climbing the walls with questions with no answers - limited only by the depths of your own depravity. Awesome.
Cycle of Life - A bit like Sold in that it isn't one of my favorites, and in another way that I feel might be a bit of a spoiler for Sold, so I won't share. I love the dichotomy of the main character/evil hiding behind a facade of what should be completely harmless, though the mask is very thin in this particular instance.
And back to The First Step....uniquely hits on some of the horror genre's most common themes - popular because they are so universally creepy. Carnivals, funhouses, clowns....shudder. I knew almost immediately that I had read this one before....I believe it was in the Eye of Fear anthology? Regardless, I knew what the twisted outcome would be, remembered it with almost startling clarity (sadly I admit my reading sits more in the quantity than retention areas - it takes something pretty special for me to clearly remember details...) and yet, I still got so wrapped up in the story, again, that it was hard to believe, again, who the villain would be, not to mention why. Additional kudos to very in depth and accurate portrayals of agoraphobia and PTSD.
Fantastic collection for lovers of horror and psychological thrillers. There is a nice smorgasbord to appeal to most tastes.
This is my first foray into horror - the genre I love so much. I grew up reading horror novels and short stories. Sometimes, it takes a small thing to make a story. In this case, I belonged to a Goodreads group that had short story contests. I won with the first part of Shadows, the first story in the book. It was only until the end of the first scene, but I always planned on it being a horror story. I also had written Reflection for it. This prompted me to write other stories in the genre. The First Step was written with bestselling author Marisa Oldham and also appears in Eye of Fear anthology.
Wow! This book truly is horrifying for sure. My favorite story was “The First Step” even though all the other stories were great as well. Even though the stories are short, the characters are fleshed out well enough. The plots of all stories are fantastic! It’s so nice to read a book that is the epitome of horror as well as one that actually held my attention throughout. Definitely recommend this book.
