Two incomplete individuals who meet in the unlikeliest of circumstances, just to be whole again. Fate sure loves an extravagance.
After the sudden death of her beloved Granda, Candice Davis finds herself unable to play the piano. With her best friend gone and her passion blocked, Candice decides to return to her hometown in Rozenne to volunteer at her favorite place in the world: Greenwich Orphanage. Between Nathan, Jake, and all of the other orphans, Candice believes her life is finally filled with love, but then she meets James. He’s tall, stubborn, and smells just like her woodworking Granda. He’s also invisible. Literally. And though Candice doesn’t seem to notice she’s the only one who can see him, Candice senses something is off about him—and her life. Torn between an impending adoption and a terrible accident, Candice has to solve the mystery of James and learn to play the piano again, or she’ll never fill the void of her broken heart.
Actual Rating: 3.5 I was provided an arc by the writer in exchange of an honest review.
First and foremost, let’s discuss the cover. I really like the silhouettes of the boy and the girl in front of that “water color” type background. The way everything is diffused adds a mysterious element to it. Overall, I love the cover.
The story revolves around a girl name Candice who hasn’t completely accepted the fact that her grand-father has died. She is still holding on to him and she just can’t let go. When she comes back to live in her grand-father’s house for the holidays she meets James. And so the story of Candice and James begins.
I can positively say that this book is a nice small read to get you out of your slump because that is exactly what it did for me. I read it during my exams when I was on the verge of entering a terrible slump and I was out of it in no time. This book is so small, literally, only 23k words that you fly through it. It’s a cute story.
The writing is very simple. Some beautiful quotes are a part of this book. But for a book written by a girl my age, it is wonderful. I can hardly write a simple paragraph and here she has beautifully displayed so many emotions. A big applause for her!
The chemistry between Candice and James was amazing. The moments were fast paced but nevertheless adorable. I liked the playful attitude and also the mysterious moments. Both the characters were well written but the biggest problem that I had with Candice was that she was such a “goody two shoes” which was just too much.
Candice has to go through some tough times in order to fill the void in her heart. The aspect of the orphanage was really interesting but it did seem that Candice was just the perfect girl no one could deny. But it was a good read till this point.
What I really didn’t like about this book was the “invisibility” of James and the cause behind it. It just didn’t fit well with the story. I don’t think that witchcraft was needed in this light and cute YA. Nevertheless I respect the author’s decision for the plot.
Zainab has done a wonderful job writing this book and now I want to read the other books published by her. she writes beautifully for a girl her age and I can’ help but admire her for this passion.
If you feel like your in a slump, this book is for you. Go pick it up!
Favourite Quotations:
“I could feel and hear his frantic heartbeat under my head. So loud, so erratic, and so soothing. As if it was home. And maybe I was home.”
“Our hearts soar and our eyes become luminous: they twinkle, they glisten, they shine.”
What a great story!! This is a very different take on any other paranormal book I have read and I really enjoyed it!
The characters are brought to life with their snarky conversations, and also with their deep connection with the other characters. There are funny moments and sad moments in this story but also twist that made me question everything I had read. The author kept me on my toes as I thought I had the story all figured out only to find out I was way off base.
Once I started this book, I wasn’t able to put it down and found that I finished this in one sitting – it was that good! I’ll definitely be checking out other books by this author!
This is such a wonderful book, just waaaay too short.
Candace decides to stay in her late grandfather's house for the 2 months before she starts her studies. She meets James and immediately sparks fly... she thinks he is a bit arrogant.
This book is very well crafted, because both the reader and Candace are in the dark about many things. It is a bit of a mystery and romance. Very well written, it shows Candace's struggle to move on, her sadness over the loss of her beloved grandfather. James is a bit of a mystery.
I would recommend this book to YA readers, especially those who like a bit of mystery.
Thank you to the author for providing me with the opportunity to read and review this book.
I received the ARC copy of this book in return of an honest review from the author herself. I have read all four books of Zainab and This one is my favorite. Its one of the most beautiful and short love stories I have ever read. I wish there would have been more to their story. I don't want my review to be a spoiler but I want to relate this book as one of the most unique and beautiful versions of Beauty And The Beast.
"Every time he was close to me, the surroundings became colder. James Wayne left chills in his wake."
Filling The Void by Zainab T. Khan is a very unique paranormal story! I was not expecting this story line and it is very different from your average paranormal book. I was so sure that this book was about ghosts and then BAM, it wasn't. The ending definitely surprised me, and the book kept me extremely entertained!
Filling The Void is a short, sweet story about a boy named James, who can not be seen by the world. James had an awesome life full of money, riches, and parents who were always traveling. Jame's world was turned upside down the day he upset the wrong person. How would you handle being invisible? How could James be visible one day and then invisible the next? Could you go from interacting with the world, to never speaking to anyone ever again? James is slowly getting used to being invisible and alone, until a young woman named Candice spots him. You read that right! She can actually see him! This is when the book really begins! Candice and James will never be the same. Candice and James do not have very simple lives and these two help each other in ways they would never expect.
I really enjoyed this book! I looked at the page count and was a little confused with how short the book was, but don't let that page number turn you away! This book is packed with friendship, love, family, tears, happiness, and so much more! I am completely blown away with all the detail, characters, and stories that Zainab T. Khan packed into these pages. I was impressed with the fact that Khan gave us multiple different stories in this book. A few of the characters have their own stories going on in the background of the book. As a reader, you are able to understand the main characters better, as well as some others, by seeing into their life and daily thoughts. This may be why I enjoyed the characters so much! Khan's characters were absolutely amazing, and I really do mean it! I immediately fell in love with every single one of them. Each character is well developed, which allows the reader to really follow the story, as well as the character, better. I found myself getting sad when Candice was sad, and happy when she was happy. I love it when an author can really draw in the reader, and allows the reader to feel as if he or she is in the book with the characters. I really liked Khan's writing style. I felt like her style was a bit friendly and familiar, which really grabbed my attention. I was hooked immediately and I had no choice but to continue reading this book until the very last word.
You do not want to miss out on Candice's and Jame's story! The ending will really surprise you and make you want to read more of Zainab T. Khan's work. This is the first book I have read by Khan, and I can honestly say that I am eager to read more.
This mysterious and romantic short story, by Zainab Khan, follows the first person perspectives of Candice Davis, and James Wayne. Candice, a volunteer at a local orphanage, finds herself perplexed upon first meeting James in the middle of a street. He is a mysterious character, whose behaviour seems a bit unpredictable. Yet, he reminds her of the one man she could trust like no other; her dearly departed Grandfather.
Loss and love fill the pages of this charming and unique tale. The developing friendship between Candice and James is fuelled by a fun and sarcastic style of humour that they share. The steady pace of the story made it fun to read. Secrets are eventually revealed to us as the story progresses, leading Candice to open her heart and finally find peace after her grandfather's passing.
A quirky and beautifully crafted tale, ideal for readers everywhere. Rated 4 stars.
"They were right then. When us mere human beings talk about something we love, something we're deeply passionate about, our souls shine from within. Our hearts soar and our eyes become luminous: they twinkle, they glisten, they shine."
I received this book from the author for an honest review. Thank you Zainab for the ARC copy for review.
This was a quick and entertaining read. This is story of Candice Davis who is very close to her Granda and loves spending her time as a volunteer at Greenwich Orphanage. But the sudden death of her Granda create a void in her life. Even though she seems to have moved on with her life, she has not. She moves to stay with her mom and dad, but never felt the place like her home. Her home is at Rozenne where she stayed all her life with her grand parents. Granda was not only her grandfather but her best friend, who had taught her to play piano, her passion. But after the dismiss of her granda, Candice is unable to continue with her passion to play the piano. With all these struggle, she decides to move back to Rozenne to spend some quality time with the children at the orphanage for few months. Here she stumbles upon a guy named James. Here life at Rozenne revolves around with James and the kids at the orphanage, specially Nathan and Jake. She feels that she has found the love of her life. With the help of James, she is able to convince the adopting parents not to separate Jake and Nathan, and to adopt them both. But when Marie calls her and tells her about the imaginary friend both Jake and Nathan keep talking with, she feels little disturbed. Survived by an accident, when she opens James letter, she gets the answer that only she can see James. James is literary invisible to the whole world. Now she has to find out and solve the mystery about James. The writing is very simple, and dialects are like simple day to day communication. But i could not digest the touch of witches and witchcraft in the story. It is a contemporary with a slight touch of fantasy in it, which i did not feel went well with the story.

I was hired to proofread this book. The only aspects of the story that I influenced were the spelling and grammar. If you feel that my connection to the story makes my review untrustworthy, so be it, but this is my honest review.
This book got off to a weird start and I was immediately intrigued and wanted to know more. I really needed to know why people apparently couldn't see James. I needed to know if he was actually invisible or if he'd just become easily ignorable.
I had a little trouble relating to Candice. There were several small things that contributed to that. Ultimately our backgrounds are just different enough for the connection to feel off to me.
I really liked the premise of this story though. The idea that someone would be invisible to most people, except those that had holes in their hearts, so to speak, was rather original, at least in my experience. It's certainly not a far stretch for the imagination to make that leap, so it was easily acceptable for me.
My biggest problem with this book is that one of the most interesting aspects of the story happens at the very end, and we only get a very small taste of it. I want to know so much more about it, and I don't even know if there will be another book that delves more into that or not. It's not even a major part of the story, but it has me so interested and I want more, but more doesn't exist.
Overall I give Filling the Void 4 out of 5 stars for being original, intriguing, and making me want more.
A vey lovingly story about love, loss, faith and friendship. Candice is a very special girl and this is the reason that pull Candice and James together. It's very impressive that Zainab was a teenager when she wrote it. Very touching, you laugh and you cry during the whole book.
