In his introduction, Clive Cussler predicted this book would become a children's classic. Since I'm the first person on Goodreads to actually review it, I would strongly dissuade Cussler from becoming a futurist or fortune teller. Ilene Meyer's illustrations were stunning, easily deserving five stars. The story itself...I wouldn't even give it one. For a children's book, this thing was a slog, mostly talking and wondering what to do punctuated with bloodied limbs. (Trust me. It's not as thrilling as it sounds.) By the end, the proofreader apparently became bored, too, because the spelling errors abounded. Between this, gaping plot holes, and the "Smart Creatures" abandoning their world when it becomes too difficult to save, I can see why this never became well-known. A pity such gorgeous art was wasted on such a dull tale.
