Her real name is not disclosed, "Umino Chica" is a pen name.
She began work as a product designer and illustrator.
Umino has a unique drawing style, listing Studio Ghibli amongst her influences, and her characters are remarkably well-developed.
Her most famous series to date is Hachimitsu to Clover (English name: Honey and Clover), a 'slice of life' manga series which debuted in 2000 in Shueisha's manga magazine, CUTiEcomic. The series won the Kodansha Manga Award in 2003 and was nominated for the Tezuka Culture Prize and an award from the Japan Media Arts Festival. It was also adapted into an animated television series in 2005, a live-action movie in 2006 and two individual live-action TV series in 2008.
Her ongoing recent series is Sangatsu no Lion (English name: March comes in like a lion), which began serialization in 2007. The series won several important prizes including: the Manga Taisho prize and Kodansha Manga Prize (general audience) in 2011, the Tezuka Osamushi Cultural Prize in 2014, and the Bunkacho Media Geijutsusai Manga bumon in 2021.
Umino has also provided the illustration for the 2009 anime series Eden of the East by Kenji Kamiyama, as well as 'Tobira o Akete' and the Glass Heart series, including 'Boukensha-tachi', 'Netsu no Shiro' and 'Love Way'.

The professional shogi world depicted in this story is filled with some unique character, and none more so than Fujimoto Raidou. He's title holder who lives his life like the way he plays his shog, loud and large. He was introduced a few volumes ago and now he's grown from an asshole to a legitimately entertaining character. This was his volume to shine and he seized by the collar.
A great story, with lavishly illustrated graphic metaphors for a intense shogi match, this is what this title is known for and it delivered.

Đây là những câu mình thích nhất trong tập truyện này. Mấy tháng qua quả thật không có thời gian để đọc, toàn ngồi lì trước màn hình laptop làm bài tập. Thật ra cảm giác chán chường vẫn cứ đeo đẳng mãi, có những đêm giống Rei hay nỗi lòng của chị Akari vậy, vô cớ khóc rồi lại khóc. Nhưng trời sáng rồi, vẫn phải vui cười. Ngoài lạc quan tiếp tục tin tưởng mình sẽ tốt hơn, chúng ta chả còn lựa chọn nào tuyệt hơn thế cả.
Nhưng dù thế nào chúng tôi vẫn hi vọng ở cuối đoạn đường, mình có thể tự hào rằng “lựa chọn của mình hoàn toàn đúng đắn”!!! Tất cả những gì chúng tôi có thể làm được chỉ là cố hết sức bơi giữa dòng đời… Cho tới khi định mệnh với vẻ dương dương tự đắc của nó buộc chúng tôi phải ngụp lặn và nhận những cú đấm xối xả của đời!!!
Con người chúng ta có trái tim, nên gặp nhiều rắc rối. “Ký ức thất bại” có khả năng trói buộc chúng ta. Một khi đã mắc kẹt vào nó, chúng ta sẽ chẳng thể thoát ra dễ dàng.
Nếu mình thua kém quá nhiều về mặt kinh nghiệm thì chí ít cũng không được để bị đánh bại về mặt tinh thần.
Nhưng dù thế nào chúng tôi vẫn hi vọng ở cuối đoạn đường, mình có thể tự hào rằng “lựa chọn của mình hoàn toàn đúng đắn”!!! Quizá algo más flojo que los anteriores, pero siento que, de vez en cuando, es bueno que haya un tomo de transición, sobre todo para poder asimilar todo lo que pasa en los anteriores.
Este tomo se centra mucho más en el shōgi (algo que quizá no interesa tanto), pero también tenemos varias escenas con la familia Kawamoto y cómo se prepara para el festival del barrio.
Es curioso porque leyendo esta historia puedes aprender de shōgi (lógicamente), pero también sobre tradiciones, historia y gastronomía japonesa, más allá de las festividades, anécdotas y platos más conocidos. La importancia que da Umino a la comida como símbolo de familiaridad, cercanía y felicidad dice mucho de cómo es la autora.

En este tomo veremos el duelo final por el título de Raidô vs. Dobashi. Como es en una zona turística, Kiriyama invita a las hermanas Kawamoto a relajarse.
También veremos la partida de Kiriyama y el siniestro Namerikawa, junto con el uso de una técnica muy poco común en el shogi profesional.
Y luego el festival de Sangatsu, donde la familia Kawamoto vende sus dulces, con la ayuda de sus amigos.

Sans doute le tome qui m'a le moins enthousiasmée depuis le début de cette excellente série: trop de temps passé dans le monde du shôji et pas assez à explorer les relations entre Rei et les trois soeurs.
