A science-minded adventurer gets mixed up in the mysteries of a fantasy world in this charming new adventure from an award-winning creative team. Boone Dias is an interdimensional explorer, a scientist from Earth who has stumbled into great responsibility. He’s got an explanation for everything, so of course the Ether’s magical residents turn to him to solve their toughest crimes. But maybe keeping the real and the abstract separate is too big a job for just one man.

Strongly influenced by Frederik Peeters' recent Euro-sci-fi stunner Aama (https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...), Ether by Matt Kindt and David Rubin is shaping up to be a trippy, surprisingly light-hearted, often funny fantasy title, one that is located somewhere along the border "between Earth and the magical realm of the Ether." It's fun, colorful stuff - recommended to fans of the sillier, more playful kind of alternative comic!
Promising beginning. Jan says it is influenced by Aama, by Frederik Peeters, and this may well be, as they have similar trippy vibes, set in someplace far from Earth, in the Ether, with lots of strange colorful creatures. There's the large ape sidekick that both Aama and Ether have in common, too. I don't love the dialogue, but the art by David Rubin fits the story and enhances the weirdness with eerie bold colors. Maybe it's a little too cartoony in places for me. I want something darker and it is going lighter than I want with the silly-looking creatures. Boone Dias is an investigator of the supernatural, which is good for his immediate future, because there is plenty of sorcery and magic in this Ether. But he's a man of science, who doesn't really believe in magic. He believes in scientific method and logic. I have this feeling he may be getting his world view challenged here.
A really interesting idea that I'm going to follow in trade format. But this does seem like something I'll really enjoy. Sorta like a Studio Ghibili film.
Parts on Earth are amazing (especially meeting of him/his wife) and they show some kind of promise that it'll be good reading. Well, once I get to see Ether, I realised this is not my thing. It all looks so chaotic and those colours were hurting my eyes. Preponderant amount of pink and violet.. okay, some people may like it. Story can be pretty interesting after first issue, though, I must say I am not going to continue.
So imaginitive and beautifully drawn. The first one is more of a curious intro, but it show great potential with its unique and whimsical world. Will be definitely continuing this series.
