Este livro é um pequeno resumo da história do século XX, pequeno porque não seria muito fácil aprofundar cem anos de história em pouco mais de 200 páginas.
Por aqui passam os principais acontecimentos do século passado e de que forma influenciaram o século que agora vivemos.
Da leitura deste livro o que se conclui é que o século XX foi atravessado por guerras. Começou com a primeira guerra mundial, depois veio a grande depressão, a guerra civil espanhola e em seguida a segunda guerra mundial. A guerra do Vietname, a guerra fria, a guerra dos Balcãs, a guerra colonial, o genocídio no Ruanda, a guerra civil no Sri Lanka, a guerra do Golfo, a invasão do Afeganistão pela Rússia, e claro, a invasão do Iraque pelos E.U.A..
É um excelente livro para quem quiser compreender melhor o século XX, reavivar alguns conhecimentos e adquirir outros, claro que não de forma aprofundada, mas o suficiente para poder participar num programa de cultura geral. :)

Typical books on world history can be very dense, providing a lot of depth when one wants an overview before diving into some specific event. For me, this book provides that overview but more than that, it explains the causes without being dreary and elucidates the macroscopic themes that would be highly useful as context for other disciplines. Very well written with consistent depth and pace.

Um resumo muito bem organizado dos acontecimentos que marcaram o mundo no século XX. Oferece uma perspetiva global da história dos anos mais recentes da humanidade, não sendo a leitura cansativa. A manter por perto para futuras consultas.

Escrever sobre um século inteiro (principalmente o século 20) em apenas 196 páginas não é nada fácil. Demanda uma alta capacidade de síntese, sem que se deixe de fora pontos cruciais para a história. O livro consegue tal feito de forma razoável. É um excelente guia, como o título diz, para quem tem pressa. Dá um aparato geral e não deixa muito a desejar.

No início do século XX, a economia agrária predominava em todos os continentes. Mas essa realidade mudaria em decorrência de dois acontecimentos históricos: a Primeira e a Segunda Guerra Mundial. O nacionalismo iria ensejar o surgimento de vários partidos de extrema-direita como o Nazismo e o Fascismo. Mortes, novas alianças políticas, o surgimento e o desaparecimento de Estados-nações, revoltas populares, os avanços nas ciências - que facilitaria a vida moderna, simultaneamente, construiria armas letais como as bombas atômicas jogadas em Hiroshima e Nagasaki.
As tensões da Guerra Fria entre EUA e URSS, que dividiu ideologicamente o mundo, a corrida espacial e armamentista, a queda do Muro de Berlim e a morte desastrosa de milhares civis na Guerra do Vietnã. A Coreia se divide, os mísseis de Cuba geram tensão de um novo conflito armado.
Os movimentos anticolonialistas ganharam ecos na África e na Ásia, a busca pela identidade nacional era uma das principais reivindicações dos países que buscavam se emancipar dos seus colonizadores.
Um século cheio de turbulências, violências e desigualdades sociais, que, por outro lado, desenvolveu tecnologias imprescindíveis para a higiene e bem-estar social. For what it's worth, this is a great summary of the 20th century. Certain important eras within the century are separated into 'bite-sized' chunks. There is no doubt that a notable amount of information would be omitted in order to maintain those tiny chunks, and thus this book cannot be used as some definitive history textbook. But, as an overall primer and review, there are few books that are this efficiently concise. A nice refresher for a rather decisive period of time.
I especially like how each portion was organized and clearly labeled. If one needed a review of a specific period of the 20th century, they could rather quickly go to that particular 'chunk.' It is rather difficult to set up a book like this, but the author did a great job!

Não é nada de transcendental, mas resume de forma bastante perceptível e de fácil compreensão a história principal do sec XX. Obviamente as duas Guerras Mundiais têm maior destaque. Pena q a história dos anos 80/90, o mais chegado ao fim do século, seja uma pouco mais a correr. Podiam ter-se focado mais em descobertas científicas dando algum exemplo mais detalhado, como fazem nas questões de guerras.
Bom para quem vai começar a ler sobre o assunto e depois dá o salto para algo mais aprofundado mas leitura também boa para quem quer só passar em revista os assuntos essenciais que caracterizam o sec XX.

Simple and straightforward, this short book gives you a comprehensive overview of the major events of the 20th century.
Definitely more entertaining than a history textbook, it’s the perfect little book to touch up on your history. However, this book will not give you the in-depth analysis and exploration of a more detailed book, so if that’s what you’re looking for, this book is not for you!
Overall, I enjoyed it - refreshed myself on my historical knowledge which was a bit rusty and definitely learn a few new facts along the way! 😊

As autoras se restringiram basicamente a contar as guerras do século XX e não a história de uma forma mais ampla. Claro que tuveram guerras marcantes, mas poderiam ter entrado mais em outros temas marcantes como nas áreas de: tecnologia, telecomunicação, medicina, biologia, física, etc. Apenas o último capítulo aborda temas mais gerais.

é um livro interessante porém deixou MUITA coisa de fora como a crise da AIDS que impactou o mundo todo e a revolta de Stonewall que mesmo only USA inspirou o movimento gay a se unir, enfim no geral é just ok

السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته
كتاب يتناول ابرز واغلب اهم الاحداث الحاصلة في القرن العشرين (1900-1999) مع مقتطفات من القرن التاسع عشر (1800 - 1899)، بحكم ان احداث كثيرة حصلت فيه كانت نتايجها في القرن العشرين ومنها الاستعمار الاوروبي لدول اسياء وافريقيا ونتائج ذلك في ما بعد ، ومقتطفات سريعة لبداية القرن الواحد والعشرين (2000 - حاليا)
في البداية وجب معرفة ان الكتاب من منظور عولمي ، حيث ان بعض احداث عربية المهمة لم تذكر ، مثل مصير الانظمة الملكية العربية في اليمن و العراق ، وتوحيد المملكة العربية السعودية ، ايضا الشريف حسيت لم يذكر ، لكن تم ذكر احداث مثل الثورة العربية واستقلال الجزائر و حرب النكبة والنكسة وحروب الخليج .
الكتاب يعتبر غني بالمعلومات حيث انه مر على الاحداث بشكل ممتع ويشد ، بدا فترة الاستعمار الاوروبي ثم سقوط الامبراطوريات مثل الصين والهند ، ثم ما قبل الحرب العالمية الاولى ، واحداث الحرب وما بعدها ، ثم يمر بشكل سريع على احداث العالم اثناء الحرب العالمية الاولى و بعدها ، بحيث انك تعرف وش كان يصير للعالم في الحرب و ايش مصير الدول والمستعمرات ، ثم فترة سقوط الامبراطوريات مثل امبراطورية النمساوية المجرية و الامبراطورية الالمانية ، وتشكل دول جديدة نتجية تفكك هذه الامبراطوريات ، ومن ثم احداث ماقبل الحرب العالمية الثانية و اثنائها وما بعدها ، ثم يمر على الدول الاخرى حيث نرا منظور العالم و تأثير نتائج الحرب ، ثم بروز دول جديدة (امريكا)وخفوت دول (بريطانيا) ، وبداية تفكك مستعمرات ، وبداية انتشار الفكر الاشتراكي ومن ثم الحرب الباردة ، و اكمالا لاهم الاحداث من السبعينات الا بداية القرن الواحد وعشرين ، وتناول في نهاية الكتاب عن كيف شبكة الانترنت غيرة الحياة وكيف تطور الطب والعلوم

A book like this just seems like a really tough project. The history of the 20th century is so vast a subject that most of the details and interesting parts have to be left out to save space. Anyway, the events of the 20th century are included, but I wish there were more stories and commentary.
