Just when Verity thought life couldn't get any more dangerous, she's bound by a debilitating curse. The terms are rescue the witch who cast it, or die.
If only it were so simple.
As she struggles against the curse's attacks on her mind and body, Verity's quest takes her behind enemy lines, to face magical trials she's never imagined. And when the two remaining sapwood seeds are caught up in the battle, she's confronted with a terrible choice that will determine not only her own fate, but that of everyone dear to her.
Now Verity must decide just how far she's willing to go, and whether the price of victory is more than she can pay.
This is the third book in the series.. it will make little sense without reading the first 2. We had left Verify in debt to a house, with a promise to free its owner, who has been captured and is being forced to work as a seer for Wicks under torture. She has cursed Verify, linking Verity's life to her ability to free the witch Sabrina. Freeing Sabrina will take all of Verity's friends and resources and will take the battle to a Wick compound. There continue to be clues that maybe all the Wicks aren't totally bad, but no clues how they could exist benignly in our world. Verity's magic gets, stronger. She learns more about it and how to be more intentional in its use. We learn more about her sanctuary spell and its limits and risks. Verity's boundaries continue to grow as she is forced more into the community of Bristol. Cooper is still there and they continue to learn more how to work as a team. They admit they are in love, but neither is willing to look too closely at their relationship long term. This book is non stop action up to the last page. Thoroughly enjoyable. I will look forward to the next book and what happens with the feeders, the vitals, Vertiy, her hotel and Bristol and her relationship with Cooper.
