The Clearwater House

Lillian Chase, a young author living in Omaha, inherits a house from a woman she doesn't know. The house is an old farmhouse near the tiny Nebraska town of Clearwater. Lillian visits the house, and while she is there, she begins to paint things she can only see when she's inside the house. Her paintings tell a story, and through them she learns the truth about something long hidden and the reason behind her inheritance.

About the author

Tammy Marshall is a lifelong Nebraska resident, but she hopes to live seaside someday. She's a retired high school language teacher and fine arts coach. She raised two of her own children and was a host-mom to seven exchange students. She's a proud member of the American Legion Riders and grabs any opportunity to get out on her 2013 Harley-Davidson Super Glide. She's a world traveler, a feature writer and columnist for a local newspaper where she writes about books, a blogger, an avid reader with a penchant for the Pulitzer Prize winners of fiction, and she's been known to dabble in stand-up comedy. Her writing is varied as she enjoys penning novels, short stories, poetry, essays, plays, columns, and her blog posts. She loves to swim and to make watercolor paintings and bookmarks. She's fluent in Spanish, and she's working hard on becoming conversant with Italian.

The Clearwater House, by Tammy Marshall, is a beautifully-constructed novel of romance and mystery, set in northeastern Nebraska. Written in a style that is more literary than most books, it succeeds in combining the romantic quality of Hardy and the strange supernatural realm of Poe.
Lillian is a young painter who learns that she will inherit an old farmhouse from a stranger, at a time when she is looking for something new in her life. That premise may be interesting enough, but it pales in comparison to the riddles Lillian bumps up against when she sets out to investigate the generous stranger, the house itself, and what the house contains. She ultimately “inherits” a great deal more than she ever bargained for.
For anyone who enjoys nostalgia and appreciates the charm and beauty of rural America as a refreshing contrast to city life, The Clearwater House is a fascinating place to stop and linger.
