There is a darkness that lurks inside of me. The evil that runs through my veins is a constant reminder of the ruthless killer I once was.
But somehow I've been changed. I'm not that person anymore. Unlike before, I can feel remorse for my actions even though guilt doesn't erase the past that still haunts me.
I've been given a chance to lead a normal life. A chance to be a son, a brother and maybe more.
My name is Mason. My future is undecided.
I don't know if it will last. All I know for certain is that none of it will even matter if I can't escape my past.
I have not read any of the previous books so I was kind of going blind when I read this. I had to highlight the names of the characters to make sure I kept track and be familiar with them. Though there were terms I did not grasp right away, fortunately, in the succeeding chapters, a lot of light was shed on the things, characters and on the background of the story. So, pretty much, I was able to form what exactly the story was.
So, Mason used to be a Hue. The Hue are a group of killers who do not have emotions. They are very effective assassins since they can kill without feeling any remorse. To them, killing is a way of life and a job. It's as easy as breathing. The Archaic are the enemies of the Hue. The Archaic are the opposite of the Hue. They are good people.
This book is basically about Mason crossing over to the good side.
In as much as I had no background about what the story is, it wasn't that complicated to understand. As the scenes unfolded, I was able to piece together what the plot was and who and what the main characters were. I found that I actually enjoyed reading this story. It was not common. I am not really a paranormal fan. I'm usually hesitant to read this genre. But since, I did not have any idea what this one was, I had no choice. Luckily, this was an interesting story and it kept me until the end. This was also not a very long book so it was just to my liking. Unlike some paranormal books wherein you had to keep track of the characters and what kind of creatures they are even if you have read the previous books, which are often confusing at first, for this one, I found that I didn't have to read again a sentence or two or backtrack to get a grasp of who's who. Also, unlike some paranormal stories wherein a lot of things are going on, for this one, the story was simple enough and without a lot of terms or jargon that you will need to keep a glossary. Even if this was already the fourth installment of the story, it pretty much can pass for a stand alone, except for one or two characters mentioned that had something happen to them in the previous books which was not expounded or mentioned in this one. Unfortunately, this had kept nagging at me and has stroke my curiosity so I might have to read the previous books if I can't stop thinking about them. Other than that, it was a fascinating read. And I really like the ending. It was so cute.
I give the book 4/5 white SUV's. This is an example of good always triumphs versus evil. Though that may sound like a broken record but it still worked in this story. There were also some surprises. Usually, I would try to anticipate what will happen in the next chapters. For this one, I did that after I have fully figured out what the gist of the story is. But still, I did not see the surprises coming near the end. I liked how it was done and I never saw them coming. I liked that I was surprised. Best thing of all, knowing I pretty much had no clue when I started but ended up understanding who the Archaic and Mason is, which means that the author succeeded in relaying the story, especially to an audience like me who had no idea what I got myself into. The story was straightforward enough to be able to clearly get the story across to the reader. That in itself is a point for the author because I was really expecting that I would get lost and would not find my way through the story.
To love someone left you open to the risk of losing them. - Regan Ure, Mason -
Thank you again, Carol Allen of Star Angels Reviews, for the review copy.
I thought this was an enjoyable read. It was a lot better than I was expecting. After the ending of the previous book I didn't think they needed another. However, this gave us another good story and the ending let us know what life had in store for these characters. Thankfully it all worked out for everyone.
I want to cry. This was one of my favorite series and Mason is the final book. I loved getting to know more of Mason and I have a new respect for Nieve. The book was everything I had hoped for. Romance and the importance of relationships of all kinds was a strong theme for this book. I was thrilled with how the series wrapped up and appreciated the author wrote an epilogue. It just makes the finality of the end more satisfying. Five glittery stars because ten glittery stars aren't available to rate!
Overall the series as a whole was about a three star rating, and I honestly could have done without this entire book. I was on chapter 11, nearly halfway done, and the entire book was just a loop on repeat with whining. From Mason not wanting to “have emotions” regarding Neve but made the stupid choice of “pretending” to be her boyfriend and then becoming “friends with benefits” and nearly every chapter them having sex. It’s boring and repetitive. And it’s honestly so annoying that each chapter has pretty much been him bitching about being an Archaic. I get it. They go to school, they come home, they have sex, he questions his decisions of growing close to her.. wake up and repeat. So boring.
Then the annoyance of having Mason call Alex “Mr. Moron” was about the most childish thing I’ve read.. even at the very end of the book he couldn’t say his name. I get it, he was an abusive turd to Neve.. but cmon man. The last thing to annoy me was this line; “I remembered what I’d done to her but I couldn’t take it back no matter how badly I wanted to” WE GET IT. You screwed Emma’s entire life and haven’t even apologized to her. Just be a man and go up to her.... stop complaining for 11 chapters. Geez.
HOWEVER. Towards the end the book picked up and it was a much more interesting read once the Hue got ahold of him. Was all very predictable but still far more interesting then anything I read up to that point. I also really enjoyed the flash forward of five years where they all have near perfect lives and everything is peachy. Cute ending.. maybe not realistic for them to waltz in the Hue camp and kill all of them when it’s been an issue for YEARS... but okay.

I am so happy Mason got to share his story. He intrigued me from the beginning. You learn a little more about the inner workings of the hue, which was interesting. Definitely didn't see him and Neve getting together. But their story was cute. They fell for wach other quickly but ofcourse were in denial, it took death to make them realize it. There's action, suspense a little heartache and some major bombshells but it gets tied up beautifully at the end. This was a great series and I'm so glad I came across it by getting the first book free.
I must admit I was intrigued by Mason so I wanted to read this book about his story. Loved it however....I didn't feel the connection between Mason and Neve at all other than the sex they had over and over within just a matter of a few days. What the??? I'm sorry but that's not love but lust only. Anyway, I gave it a 4 star only because I thought the author did a good job explaining Mason. Everyone had a happy ending, not losing anyone they loved and the last chapter was sweet.
3.75 - I really enjoyed parts of this series. I would have loved it if it had not had so much of the same rinse and repeat scenes along with the continuity issues or at least an explanation of why it was different. Over all a nice read.
The best book series ever!!!!!!!! I really enjoyed read this book. I’m glad we got to see a perspective from Mason. You won’t regret reading this book!
