Librarian note: Previously published as Seduced by Destiny by Kira Morgan

Meet the lasses in the world of Mary Queen of Scots...Like the Scottish thistle, they're lovely yet tough, beautiful yet prickly, and only the strongest and wisest heroes are able to elude their thorns to discover the tender blossom within.

A woman with a legacy...a man with a secret. She seeks to avenge her brave mother's murder. He seeks to reconcile himself to his father's death.

Josselin Ancrum, a sword-wielding Scottish war-orphan-turned-spy for Queen Mary, has her eye on Drew MacAdam. She suspects the golfing "Highlander" isn't quite who he claims to be. While she serves up secret messages in the guise of a tavern wench, he seems to be courting the enemy English when he isn't beating the Scots at their own game. Drawn together by fate, Drew and Jossy are swept up in their growing desires and the designs of their warring queens, until they uncover the terrible secret that binds their star-crossed souls.

I adore Glynnis Campbell's novels. Seduced by Destiny, set in 1545 Scotland, is Glynnis writing as Kira Morgan. The plot features my favorite type of heroine - a woman who can wield a sword.

Jossy's mother was slain on a battlefield. Raised by three men, Jossy ends up outspoken, headstrong, and able to take care of herself. It turns out the man who slew Jossy's mother did so out of mercy, not anger. Even so, he was so overwrought with guilt that he took his own life. This was Drew's father. So we have a Romeo-and-Juliet setup, where the families are on opposite sides of a large conflict. Luckily for Jossy and Drew, they have no idea how they are connected. Drew never knew who his father killed. He resisted following in his father's footsteps, though - instead using his athletic skills to play golf across Scotland, taking their money rather than their lives.

This is the setup to a quite intriguing story. Jossy is no shrinking violet, and for good reason. The men who raised her wanted her to be ready for anything. Scotland in the 1500s wasn't a calm, quiet place. It involved chaos and warfare. Her character and skills make perfect sense for her time and situation.

Drew, equally, has a powerful reason to be avoiding the conflict around him. He's seen first hand the trauma it can cause. Still, he is drawn in to Jossy and her passion for what she feels is right.

As with all her books, the research Glynnis puts into this story is simply amazing. I adored all the details - "Drew made a small mount of sand and placed his elm ball upon it." Who knew that's how they used to play! You feel as if you are really there, learning fascinating tidbits about the way life used to be. She creates a fantastically solid world without turning it into a dry lecture.

There were a few tiny quibbles I had with phrasing, but certainly nothing serious. All in all, the characters are great, the world in which they live is robust and detailed, and I was drawn along until the very end.

Highly recommended.

The Warrior Lass

Jossy and Drew were orphans of the war between Scotland and England. They were both raised by three men that blamed the other country for these deaths. Jossy was taught to fight even better than her mother by her grieving family friends that stepped in as foster father's and filled her with hate for all things English. Drew was raised by three grieving Uncles determined to create Drew into a fighting machine for retribution of their brother. She was out to avenge her mother and when offered to spy for Queen Mary she jumped at the chance. Drew was a Peace loving man like his father and all he wanted to do was play Golf in Scotland, but was savvy to the dangers of Court Intrigue and getting to close to the Queen so appointed himself her protector. They met accidentally as Queen Mary entered the city and asked to meet this fascinating young woman that championed Mary to a crowd of troublemakers. Drew did everything he could to prevent her from this foolish dangerous step but she wouldn't listen to him.
He disguised himself as a Highlander so he could play his beloved game and earn winnings. They developed a relationship that turned into one of love, danger and intrigue and soon were fighting for their lives. This is a different story than the usual and surrounds Scotland's love of Golf and competition. I enjoyed it very much and it kept you guessing.

This was discarded library book I got for 50 cents. It was a good buy. I enjoyed Highlander romance and history so I thought this would be a great read. I actually was disappointed. The author's story was very great! However the writing for me was just too much and quite boring. I am an easy to please when it comes to historical romance novels, but this read got me lost several times and made my mind wander. I got bored almost every other chapter and I think the sensual bed scene seem to be a little lacking. Maybe others can enjoy this book better than I do. It's just sad it didn't really got me as I wanted to.

I mean, it was decent and all, but it didn’t hold my attention like her other books have. Jossy’s “spy” career is a joke from the beginning and I felt like the book could’ve gone into more detail by going through her training, because she was ridiculously green to the point that she was more a hazard to the Queen than anything. It wasn’t overly realistic, but I still enjoyed it far more than I thought I would, considering the plot surrounds golf.

MacAdam's Lass (Scottish Lasses Book 2)

The love story of Josselin and Drew. Josselin's mother was kill on a battlefield. When she was found she was brought back home and was found to have a little girl. She was tough to be a son woman and to hate the English. Drew's father committed suicide after he kill a woman on a battlefield and he was tough to be a warrior. They meet as adults and fall in love. Can love win out over years of teaching? Great story.

A wonderful story

This was a great adventure. And the love story was at its best. I think she incorporated some new twist into writing this kind of genre. Golf in the mid 1500s and commoners mixing with the queen.

*Note: Read and reviewed for The Season for Romance.

Josselin was orphaned at a young age when she lost both her parents in two different battles. Her mother’s death was especially tragic when she fought alongside fellow Scottish men at the Battle of Ancrum Moor and was fatally wounded. She beseeched the help of an Englishman, and against his own will, he cut her down with his sword as an act of mercy. From then on, she became known as the Maiden of Ancrum Moor. Josselin herself grew up to be a beautiful fighter, just like her mother. She is also impetuous, strong-willed and eager to exact vengeance against the English for her mother’s death.

The Englishman who ended the life of Josselin’s mother is plagued by the guilt of having murdered a woman. He wrote a final letter and gave it to his young son, Andrew who delivered it to his uncles. By the time the boy returned, his father was already hanging from the rafters; and so it was on that day that two young children were left without parents.

Andrew, later known as Drew, was raised by his three uncles. He was taught how to fight and wield a sword with incredible dexterity. Like his father though, Andrew never acquired a taste for blood or violence. He preferred to fight his battles on the golf course. As a grown man, Andrew leads his uncles to believe that he is earning his living fighting in the English tournament circuit. Meanwhile, he is really disguised as a Highlander playing golf alongside the Scots.

It was during the procession honoring the new Queen Mary of Scots that Drew met a spirited young lad that is moments away from going toe-to-toe with some rather large and drunken Scotsmen. Drew intervenes to assist the young man only to learn that he is really a she. Josselin is none-too-pleased about being accosted by a too handsome, too charming and too nosy Highlander. All that bickering actually caught the new queen’s attention and leads to a series of events that changes Josselin and Drew’s lives forever.

Once again, Kira Morgan gives us colorful characters that you hope will find happiness against the odds stacked against them. Jossy and Drew are so very different yet so compatible. This story didn’t offer the same level of mystery as its predecessor but it isn't without some suspense. Drew spends most of his time hiding under the pretense of being a Highlander. As a reader, you’ll spend much of your time wondering what will happen to them once the truth is revealed.

I didn’t find this novel quite as gripping as Morgan’s first, Captured by Desire because of the simpler plot. However, the fiery personalities and passionate relationship between Jossy and Drew made the story very enjoyable.

3 1/2 stars.
Josselin's mother died on the battlefield, fighting the English, trying to avenge her husband's murder. The three kinsmen who found her body brought her home, only to discover a small child, now orphaned. The brothers raised tiny Josselin as their own, teaching her to read, write, fight, and hate the English.

Drew MacAdam's father was at that same battle, when he came across a Scottish maid so badly injured she implored him to kill her to end her suffering. He did, then felt such remorse over killing a woman that shortly thereafter he took his own life. Drew was raised by his uncles to hate the Scots and trained in sword skills.

Josselin is in Edinburgh to see the arrival of Mary, the new Scottish Queen. Her uncles have agreed to let her go, provided she dresses as a man and avoids trouble. Drew abhors fighting, and prefers to beat the Scots at their own game - golf. He is in Edinburgh at this time, disguised as a highlander to avoid the troubles of being English. Josselin is upset by some of the catcalls at the new Queen and jumps to her defense - calling attention to herself and potentially getting herself killed. Drew jumps in to assist and outs her as a woman. The Queen is impressed and sends her servant with a message for Josselin. Of course Drew is intrigued, and fears Josselin is too naive to handle her change in circumstance. He feels duty-bound to keep an eye on her. Josselin is suspicious of Drew and wants to keep an eye on him. Add a bit of attraction, three uncles and three fathers, and a bit of political intrigue and bam! nothing goes the way it was planned...

My thoughts: This was a really cute read. I felt very lighthearted as I read Seduced by Destiny. I liked "Jossy" and Drew, even though they were both a bit irritating in their surety that they were smarter/better at swords than the other. Their passion, once ignited, was certainly hot, and I rooted for these two to have an HEA, despite their differences. The descriptions of their surroundings, the flirting back and forth between the h/h, and the stubborn uncles/fathers made for entertaining reading. The political intrigue portion of the story fell a bit weak in parts, but overall I read Seduced by Destiny with a smile.

SEDUCED BY DESTINY written by Kira Morgan
03/11 - Grand Central Publishing - Mass Market Paperback, 352 pages

If love is a battlefield what can you use to shield your heart from being broken?

Andrew MacAdam was raised by uncles as a result of the fate that created a situation that had taken his father’s life. Instead of going to war and raging against his enemies this Englishman lived in Scotland battling another type of competition – the game of golf. Josselin Ancrum was also raised by others who were not her parents but she was lived for the fight each and every scrape she got into was an opportunity to seize the day with both hands. When these two forces collide nothing but the earth stopping its rotation is going to keep them apart.

Drew and Jossy both their loved respective countries and Queens and while Jossy did not have to pretend to be something she was not. But after she is offered the opportunity to be a spy for her Queen she understood the concept of living a lie. Jossy had agreed through her devotion to the Queen of Scotland to be a dedicated spy, just not a very good one not for a lack of trying. Drew on the other hand took nothing but golf seriously until Jossy was in his line of sight and the fates be damned that woman was going to be his.

But spies lead dangerous lives and walk under the cover of darkness, or in Jossy’s case you serve beer and yell at the locals to behave themselves. Their paths cross on the golf course during the day and torturing each other every night in the inn where they did not do much sleeping.

Yet the past always comes back to haunt you and lying to each other was the least of the stupid decisions they made. You might consider kidnapping bad, or getting into a sword fight with one another pretty awful, yet you would be wrong because these two decide to wager everything on each other forgetting the past or at least trying to.

This book brings up the history of the game of golf into an historical romance which I can’t recall having been done before. Ms. Morgan loves the original story and interesting concept while having her characters produce strength and sustainability. She has scored in this book for more than 18 holes of golf that is for sure.

SWORN TO REVENGE

All her life, Josselin Ancrum has been trained for combat, hoping to exact vengeance for her heroic mother, who was killed fighting the English. When asked to spy for the Scottish Queen, Jossy joyfully accepts. But when a handsome stranger rescues her from sudden danger, his charm distracts her from her mission.

SHROUDED BY SECRECY

On the surface, Drew MacAdam may appear to be nothing more than a carefree champion, but his heart harbors a dark secret: This Highland hero is actually a skilled English soldier with a hatred for war and for the Scottish. Yet from the moment he meets the feisty Jossy, he's captured by her fiercely loyal heart. He's determined the honey-haired lass will be his ultimate prize - until the tragedy of their entwined legacies is revealed. Are these star-crossed lovers to be divided by their pasts? Or will they be...

My thoughts........

First book by this author and i really enjoyed it! Thought it was funny and cute and fast paced. The attraction between Drew and Jossy is pretty apparent from the beginning but Jossy is destined to deny it.Her protestations are pretty funny with her quick wit comments.Drew pretending to be a Highlander and is not. He makes his living at golfing which was pretty funny to see as it was no a common way to make a living back than. Jossy a beer serving wench and warrior save the Queen of Scotland and she rewarded by enlisted by spy for her. Drew and her lives become some what rocky when she suspect him of being a spy but not as always as it seems. These two learn that the past are connected and that they are sworn enemies but its to late Jossy heart is already given. They need to overcome this work together to solve the mystery as to who is trying to hurt both of them and live happily ever after. But, there are surprises constantly popping up and it was fun to see how they were coping . These two were a pleasure to read about you could not help but love there character. Will definitely be picking up another of her novels that is for sure.

This story is set in Scotland in August 1561. The heroine is ninteen year old Josselin Ancrum. She has blond hair and green eyes. She was raised by three men after her parents died. She's a tavern wench, a.k.a. waitress. The hero is twenty-two year old Drew MacAdam, real name, Andrew Armstrong. He's got dark hair and blue eyes. When he was only six years old he witnessed something terrible that happened to his father. He was raised by his uncles.

Not a whole lot going on in this story. I didn't find it interesting at all and it was a chore to get through it. The characters were uninteresting to me from the start. All the hero seemed to do was drink beer and play golf, sometimes with the queen of Scotland! And Josselin was there serving them beer from the beer wagon. Color me crazy but golfing in the 16th century seems a bit odd to me, too modern though I know it obviously was around.

From the time Drew and Josselin, whom he calls 'Jossy', met, they were always, coincidentally, at the same place a lot of the time. They bicker a lot, which I didn't mind. There was instant attraction on Drew's part but she didn't seem to be interested at first. The sex scenes were minimal and uninteresting.

Drew has a reunion of sorts with the uncles who raised him but I wasn't interested in it but that point.

Josselin was asked by Philipe de la Fontaine to become a spy for the Queen and she agreed. I never understood why she was chosen or how that came about in the first place. Why was she the chosen one?

There wasn't much substance to the story at all. I've realized that I don't like Scottish brogue at all and it ruined my (possible) enjoyment of the story. I was totally unimpressed with this story and grade it a C/3 stars. I don't think I'd try this author again unless she changes time periods.

I thought this was a fun book to read. On one hand, it was a typical Highlander romance with "star-crossed lovers", enemies and duels - but it also had a champion -- golfer. I know, golf is said to have originated in Scotland, but I never thought I would run into it in a historical romance! To me, this gave the book a sense of humor as well.

Jossy and Drew had both been orphaned as children by the same war. Drew's father had killed Jossy's mother out of mercy on the battlefield. But he still felt guilty so went home and killed himself. Drew is raised by his 3 uncles, and Jossy is raised by the 3 men who found her mother on the battlefield and brought her home. She calls them her 3 dads. Years later Jossy and Drew meet in Scotland. Drew is posing as a Highlander so that he can play golf - at which he is very good. Jossy, by being in the right place at the right time, has been enlisted as a spy for the Queen. She starts working as a beer wench with a beer cart on the local golf courses. It is inevitable that their paths would continue to cross.

Jossy was really headstrong, which I liked about her. It gave her some fire to survive in some of the predicaments she found herself in. She was also fiercely loyal to things she loved, regardless of the consequences. Drew was fun-loving and always seemed to deal with each situation with humor. He wasn't beyond setting up his golf partners by betting them drinks per hole, and then losing the hole, only to get them drunk enough that he won the game easily in the end. Where Jossy was all about revenge for her mother and war - Drew did not have a stomach for fighting, and even though was a master swordsman, rarely did he draw his sword. Opposites attract as they say, and these two were in a relationship before they knew what had hit them.

Raised by 3 men after her mother is slaughtered at the hands of the English, Scottish maid Josselin Ancrum may be a tavern serving maid, but she can also wield a blade. Drew MacAdam's uncles raised him to be a master swordsman in the hopes that he would spill Scottish blood in retalliation for lives lost in the same battle that took the life of Josie's mother; however, Drew's heart leads him to exact vengeance through wielding a golf club instead. Living in disguise as a Highlander, MacAdam golfs his way through Scotland taking Scottish gold instead of Scottish lives. But when he encounters Josie, his world is turned upside down and his thoughts are turned from golf to her. A chance encounter leads Josie into the spy business, acting as a go-between for secret encrypted messages. MacAdam isn't sure what exacty Josie is involved in, but he knows for certain that she is in over her head and he can't turn away. Will Drew and Josie give in to the passion that threatens to ignite every time they are near to one another? Will Drew be able to protect Josie from the dangerous game she is playing? What will happen when the truth about their true identities is revealed to one another? Will the enmity between Enland and Scotland in the past tear apart Josie and Drew's future?

There is more than enough passion, intrigue and action to keep you on the edge of your seat in this novel. Once I got past the first 2 chapters, I couldn't put this book down and read it in one sitting. Very exciting, and very, very steamy!!!

Seduced by Destiny by Kira Morgan
Historical Romance -March 1st, 2011
3 ½ stars

Josselin Ancrum is a rebellious young woman. She is given leave by her three adopted fathers to travel to the capital and join in the festivities welcoming Queen Mary back to Scotland. But despite her fathers’ strict warning, Jossy keepst getting into trouble! When she is saved in street brawl, Drew McAdams quickly realizes that Jossy is a female despite her disguise. He is enchanted by this Scottish minx and is attracted to her. (Even though Drew is an English nobleman who loathed all Scottish.) But can their fiery attraction to each other overcome all obstacles?

This is the first Scottish themed romance book that I read that has golf in it! I can’t believe that Drew goes around Scotland playing golf winning tournaments and winning money from the Scottish. It was an original and a refreshing change from the typical Scottish warrior plotline. This is a hilarious and sweet story with enjoyable characters. Jossy is an entertaining and endearing heroine. Brash and reckless, she also posseses a courageous and loyal heart, which makes her a likeable character. Drew is also also charms with his roguish ways and his genuine affection for Jossy.

Merry and light, this is not your typical Scottish romance!

This was a Goodreads giveaway win. Unusual - a romance involving golf, in 16th c. Scotland no less, a first for me. Parts made me laugh, although I'm not sure that was the author's intent. Much of the book was pretty far-fetched, but not to the point that it was bothersome - heroine, seemingly low-born or middle class at best, could read and fight with a sword, her uncles let her go to Edinburgh on her own (really? in the 16th c.?), she runs all over Edinburgh by herself, is randomly picked by Queen Mary's spymaster to spy for the Queen, etc. This was one of those romances where everyone misunderstands everyone else because no one will actually talk to anyone else, and the entire plot conflict is based on these misunderstandings. I often find these books frustrating, screaming to myself, "just talk to him, stupid!", but in this one at least the misunderstandings were laughable enough to be entertaining. Jossy was pretty annoying - she was so sure she knew everything, even though she was usually very wrong. I liked Drew though, and I was rooting for them to get together.

I loved this book!! I think this is the best Glynnis Campbell book I have read yet.

This story opens with the death of both Drew's father and Jossy's mother. So as the reader we know from the onset the connection between these two.

Drew is an outstanding hero - I absolutely loved him. He was charming, funny and extremely sexy! He is perfect for Jossy and would do anything for her.

Jossy was a good heroine - a touch on the naive side. But she is loyal and has spirit. You can't help but like her.

I loved these two together - and I liked that they stood up for each other and were determined to make things work between them.

While this book is part of a series - Scottish Lasses - it is totally stand alone - the connection to the first book is almost non existent and you won't feel lost if you read this book first. Although it is not necessary - you should read the first book too - it is equally excellent.

I am now going to check out Ms Campbell's backlist while waiting for the third Scottish Lasses book!!

This is a fantastic historical romance. From the very beginning I was enthralled by the story. SEDUCED BY DESTINY is different. The main character, Drew, is an Englishman disguised as a Highlander who plays golf in Scotland. He was totally not what I expected when I started the book - in a good way. I loved him. His attraction to and courting of Josselin was both funny and sweet. I just loved everything about him. Josselin is headstrong and stubborn, but she has a pretty good head on her shoulders thanks to her three fathers and Kate, her surrogate mother. The intrigue and secrecy that Josselin is undertaking in the name of her Queen moves the story along at a quick pace and kept me turning the pages. I loved Josselin and Drew's love story and felt that the other plots in the book didn't overshadow, but enhanced.

The way Ms. Morgan presents this novel, starting with the prologue, set it up as an enticing romance that is full of danger, intrigue, secrecy, and love. I love how Jossy and Drew have an instant chemistry that fairly sparks from the get-go and had me checking for scorch marks on my fingertips. Seduced by Destiny was entertaining with two characters with quick wit, passionate encounters of both the sexual and argumentative kind, and a love that will have them wanting to protect each other no matter the cost to themselves. It gives the reader a chance to see what a true romance is as it includes all the variables that a great book of this genre should. I am definitely a fan of Kira Morgan’s work and cannot wait to read more.

My first looking into the world of romance novels, which was a first read win.

Taking place in Scotland with the tensions of English vs. Scottish, but more so on the golf course. Josey to avenge the death of her mother, and Drew that of his father, of course meet and love blossoms. The star crossed lovers are doomed...or are they?

This book was an easy and fast read, which is what I expected from a romance novel. With that being said, the story was not very original and the characters were not very complex. The author herself even said she took a page out of Romeo and Juliet, and it's pretty evident that she did while reading the book. It was fun and easy, but not much sustenance to it. The story was predictable as was the ending.

Well, it wasn't bad. I mean, I like romances. I even like these (pseudo-)historical romances -- this one is set in 1561, when Mary Queen of Scots returned to Scotland from France. It's more of a farce, and kind of silly. I would say that the main characters' meeting and subsequent courtship was believable, some of the situations weren't (but in a lighthearted non-serious way, so it wasn't annoying or anything), and the conclusions to their "conflicts" were too easy. It was interesting that Mary Queen of Scots was a minor character, and I liked all of the author's research on golf, and the way the game was worked into the story. If you're in the mood for a little fun and light escapism, you'll enjoy this -- I didn't struggle to finish it.

Drew is an Englishman golfing his way around Scotland under the guise of a Highlander. Josselin is one tough cookie who is determined to avenge the brutal slaying of her mother. When Josselin and Drew meet they have no clue how their pasts intertwine.

Josselin and Drew just might be one of my favorite couples. The banter that took place between these two had me grinning even when I shouldn’t have. Saucy characters, undeniable chemistry, a beautiful setting, and a dash of intrigue. Seduced by Destiny encompassed everything I look for in a historical romance novel.

The heroine in this story is pretty awesome, I felt that she and her leading man (who is not a duke, earl, etc.) were both evenly involved when it came to saving the day & creating their happily ever after, which isn't something I can say about most of the historical romances I've read in the past. It was also pretty entertaining, there were several funny bits and action scenes (assassin oh my!), no worries though there were "those" types of action scenes too ;) and I just simply LOVED the two main characters and their interactions with each other.

He has three uncles who've trained him to overcome his father's weaknesses. She has three father's who've trained her to avenge her mother's death. He's run off to play golf in Scotland. She's run off to spy for the Queen in Edinburgh. The three uncles and three fathers are going to bring them back home and set things right. Not one of the six old men has considered the considerable trouble the two young lovers have gotten themselves into. Nor have they considered love!

This was the best of the books in this series.

This book was ok, I wouldn't say I disliked it nor would I say I enjoyed it immensely. There were certain areas in the book - mainly when the main characters Josselin and Drew match wits that extremely well written but all other parts of the book seem to drag and wasn't all that interesting. I wouldn't highly recommend it but if you've got nothing else to read, you might want to take it up.
