Chanced upon this travelogue on Africa in the library. It is purely borne out of boredom of not being able to travel due to the pandemic. Besides, as Africa is not in my to-travel list, I thought I would read a book on another person’s journey in Africa. She gave me a lot more than I asked for as she also covered some colonial and modern history of the African countries she travelled to in a non boring way. I learnt something about African history for the first time. Also her personal stories she covered in the books are engaging too

Book’s name: 非洲三万里 (30 000 MILES OF AFRICA)

What is the book about: This book is a travel experience written by Bi Shumin(毕淑敏)after she rode the steam locomotive “Pride of Africa” from Cape Town, South Africa to Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, and concentrated on seclusion for a year. The book records what the author saw, heard, and felt during her trip to Africa. With travel as the thread, it presents the warmth and desolation in life to the readers one by one. The author's writing is beautiful, describing the history, culture, customs, and travel experiences of various parts of Africa vividly, making the readers feel as if they are there.

In the author's writing, the poverty and hunger of the African natives outside the window and the wealth and luxury of the passengers in the train cafeteria inside the window formed a sharp contrast.

The author discreb “ They were dressed in rags, their skin stuck to their bones, revealing the skeleton of their bodies. Especially the children, whose hands were dark on the back and light pink on the palms. When they bent their elbows and turned their palms outward, their hands were like strange leaves, weakly supporting their heads with clear outlines like skull specimens, and their lips moved slightly as the knives of the diners in the car danced...” Those paragraphs shows how hungry and food carvings.
