After the Sunset

Rate this book
Two years after riding off into the sunset with ranch owner Rand Holloway, Stefan Joss has made a tentative peace with his new life, teaching at a community college. But the course of true love never does run smooth. Rand wants him home on the ranch; Stef wants an exit strategy in case Rand ever decides to throw him out. Finally, after recognizing how unfair he’s being, Stef makes a commitment, and Rand is over the moon.

When Stef gets the chance to prove his devotion, he doesn’t hesitate—despite the risk to his health—and Rand takes the opportunity to show everyone that sometimes life’s best surprises come after the sunset.

This is the second book in the "Timing" series and it can not be read as a stand-alone. Stefan and Rand's story starts in Timing #1, so you should start there fcc37b1805a49c13a3f7d3d50b64ed47

I myself loved these two and I know a lot of people think that this series is a lot like "The Matter of Time" series... and they would be right! I was actually thrilled about that fact because I absolutely adore Jory and Sam 7e6c22cc4c29adb0f4a619d0806b71f1

Stefan and Rand were pretty awesome themselves, but Jory and Sam will always be my favorite Mary Calmes couple !!

Let me point out that these books may not be for everyone. They are pretty ott and ridiculous at times, but to me, they are like crack and I just can't get enough.

Afbeeldingsresultaat voor I need more

Just like in "The Matter of Time" series everyone freaking loves Stefan. He is so awesome, he can turn a straight man gay just with the wink of an eye ;)

Rand was a bit different though. He was an asshole at the beginning of the first book but he didn't make the same stupid mistakes that Sam did. Once he decided what, or should I say who, he wanted, he was pretty dedicated! It was very refreshing !!

I really enjoyed this series and I can't wait for the next book, which is about Glenn. He is Rand's cousin and he plays a big part in this book actually.

Highly recommended to Mary fans ;)

Okay-- there is something comforting about knowing when you open a book there will be witty dialog, hot, strong men (a cowboy in this case!) and REALLY scorching sex scenes that make you remember that sex is, at its best, one of the most enjoyable and funnest parts of falling in love.

That's what reading a Mary Calmes book is like--characters who are smart, dialog that is sparkling, and the strong undercurrent of family and kindness and putting yourself out for your mate because that's what having a mate is all about. I loved After the Sunset--I loved Timing, and Stefan and Rand certainly didn't let me down on the second go-round. They are not necessarily nice people, but they are nice to each other, and they are gruff and smartassed and generally fun to spend an afternoon with. This book did everything I asked for in a romance--made me laugh, took me away from myself, and made me yearn. Good stuff. EXCELLENT stuff. What reading for pleasure is all about.

"Jesus, Stef, I love you more than anything. I will never, ever, let you leave me, and you gotta never think that's gonna change. We're gonna fight, but there will not come a time when I want you anywhere but at my side. You hear me?"
I nodded.
"Say it."
I smiled into the hollow of his throat. "Rand Holloway loves me."
"Yes, I do." He hugged me tight. "You're my whole life."

One moment for cover love, please? Reese Dante has done a brilliant job with the new 2nd Edition covers, in my opinion. Love them!

Two years ago, Rand Holloway and Stefan Joss went from enemies to lovers in sizzling style over the course of Rand's sister Charlotte’s four-day wedding blowout. They bickered, they had steaming hot sex, and they fell in love.

Two years later Stefan is all in his relationship with Rand Holloway. Though they've had some ups (professionally, Rand and his Ranch - the Red Diamond - are doing better than ever) and downs (several people, including the mayor of the town Rand grew up in are vocally and vehemently opposed to their relationship)...
“He was kicked off every committee in this town as well as having his property lines rezoned so that the Red Diamond is no longer even in Winston but in Hillman instead.”

...but they're finally settled down together and happier than ever. The "new" town they find themselves zoned to be a part of couldn't be more welcoming and life is good.

But the path to true love rarely runs smooth and things around Stef are never boring. There's plenty happening in this installment of the series including Rand's father's side of the family finding out about Stef, a rodeo that must be participated in, old family secrets, and various detractors that must be put in their place.

But one thing is absolutely certain and shines through in every encounter, passionate embrace, and quiet moment between Rand and Stef: their absolute love for one another.
What can I say? I've reread this series so many times I could practically recite passages.

Stef is stubborn, Rand is an overprotective and growly alpha in the best way, and the two mesh so well. It just all puts hearts in my eyes.

Mary Calmes knows how to pull at the heartstrings, write with real humor, and give enough passion to keep everything spicy. But in the end, it's all about the love.
“Jesus, Stef, I love you more than anything. I will never, ever, let you leave me, and you gotta never think that’s gonna change. We’re gonna fight, but there will not come a time when I want you anywhere but at my side. You hear me?”
I nodded.
“Say it.”
I smiled into the hollow of his throat. “Rand Holloway loves me.”
“Yes, I do.” He hugged me tight. “You’re my whole life.”

This is a fun established couple romance with humor, low angst, HOT passionate sex and a sweet HEA.

Recommended.

URGH...I've learned an important lesson: as much as I love a Mary Calmes book, I must read in doses. Too much Calmes can lead to sudden irritation and aggravation.

Man, if I didn’t stress enough in my review of “Timing”, book 1 of this series, I will just drive the message home...this series is EXACTLY the “Matter of Time” saga, but in Texas on a ranch. And just as she did with that series, Calmes blows a perfectly GREAT coupling by separating them to do their own thing in the follow up.

GRRRR...You can’t make me FALL IN LOVE with Rand in “Timing” only to have him MIA for more than 1/2 the book in “After the Sunset”!!!!!

I don’t care about Stef and how everyone loves him and every straight man suddenly wants to have gay-lovin’ with him. It irritates me reading about Stef being so friendly and charming that it actually comes across as flirtatious and inappropriate. I despise not having Rand around to balance out the aggravation that is Stef. If I wanted all those things…I would have reread MATTER OF TIME! GRRRRR!!!

Fine. Stef. Rodeo. Family dramz. Homemaker. Done. The end.

All I care about are the Rand parts...and those were just barely enough to carry this book.

Annoyed.

I loved this second book! I was afraid we're gonna get only some sugary sweet scenes with Rand and Stefan, but what we got was super exciting and better than I expected!

The beginning was a little slow but once Stef sets his mind to help Rand and their ranch, we get action, we get bulls, and horses, we get fights and punches and BIG secrets. And oh how much I loved Rand's possessiveness!!

I really enjoyed this story. The writing was great, light and the characters were extremely well portrayed. It can't be read as a standalone. I think it's best to read the first book Timing. This is the continuation of their love story. I saw the third book is about Glenn. So I will miss Rand and Stef. It was such a sweet story. It's usually not my cup of tea but somehow the writing worked for me and I couldn't get enough. Oh and there are some pretty HOT scenes too!!

I love this series. Rand being all possessive and Stef being all Stef.

Some people have complained that Stef and Rand spent so much time apart in this, but that never bothered me. I think it was amazing how Stef tried to save the ranch and how much hurt/comfort that resulted in.

And Rand coming to get Stef and being all MINE MINE MINE was simply amazing.

This series is one of my favorites of Mary and I can’t get enough of it.

(And I still think it’s hilarious how Mac can be Mac Gentry in book 1, Mac Chapman in this book and then Mac Gentry again in book 3. So awesome how you cannot notice this as an author.)

Two years later and not much has changed and I'm soooo ok with that.

Stefan is finally enmeshed in the ranch life. In his efforts to help Rand out, he gets himself into quite the situation. Have no worries though, because he always comes out on top through his stubborn determination and irresistible charm.

Rand unsurprisingly continues to be just as possessive and dominating, committed to his Stefan like nobody's business. He's got everything planned out to ensure their future and I like a man with vision.

Throw in some crazy, soap opera drama involving family rivalries and secrets, and you've no doubt got yourself a classic, entertaining Calmes read.

Meags thanks for keeping me on track. Ready for the next? I see a shifter Calmes in our immediate future.

I think I’m going to be a big fan of Mary Calmes. No real surprise there – many of my GR friends would rant and rave every time I mentioned I’d never read one of Mary Calmes’ books before, like I was some sort of unforgivable sinner. The fact that they were right and I was wrong doesn’t need to be the focus here, lest they get a big head over it (you know who you are *side-eyes*).

I always love a good sequel; especially a “post-HEA” sequel. Here, we got to revisit Stef and Rand, two years after Stef decided to stay on the ranch. These two are so adorable together, and may I also say, they’re super-fricken-hot in the book-sex department.

There is just something about Rand as a character that I find appealing – could be the fact that he’s a hot cowboy, because duh, that’s like 50 types of appealing! Plus, he’s all sorts of intense with his possessive grrr-mine! attitude towards Stef. It sort of borders on extreme and possibly unhealthy, but I find it a ridiculous turn on.

What I had a bit of an issue with was all the convoluted family drama, which seemingly came out of left field. It was a tad melodramatic and hard to fathom. Regardless of this tiny qualm, I really enjoyed the premise of this story. I liked most of the characters, and I loved the witty dialogue.

Continually smashing these buddy reads to shreds, with R!

* Yes ! Here we pick up with rancher, big, tough Rand, 33, and his partner, the beautiful man in his life for the past two years, the amazing Stefan.
Stefan, nearly 30, is the blonde finance wiz

who has helped Rand build the Red Diamond Ranch into a self-sustained business, and family haven.
Two years later the men are just as devoted and happy, and their lives have been full of love. The men are still steamy and sexy, and begin talks about having babies. Stefan has been commuting to teach, but will soon need something else.
Rand has made him his partner

in business, too, 50-50.
When estranged family dumps themselves into their laps, there is never a dull moment. The trick is discovered, and Stefan will handle this one.
Rhodesian Ridgebacks...Bella

While Rand is needed by his brother's ranch, Stefan and the ranch hands will be going to the rodeo to ensure their grazing rights. It's a walloping good time, too ! As Stefan has to ward off the homophobes, the hands are doing great in their events,
until they realize that Stefan must enter an event also.
Oh my !

The family is complicated in a tangled web, and Stefan, besides his black eye, will end up injured as well. Roaring Rand comes to be with him, take him home and hopefully get back to normal. Not likely, because what is normal anyway?

Lively characters in this cast, and a well written story that holds our interest, gives us some laughs, and also very tender moments.
A new twist for Glenn, who we will hear more about in book three.
Highly recommended for any cowboy fan. ENJOY !

Best Buddy Read Ever with my pal Red... part deux!

It’s been two years since Stef was swept off his feet at Charlotte’s wedding and he and Rand are settling into their life together on the Red Diamond. The Red Diamond is growing by leaps and bounds and Stef has finally found his niche as a teacher at the local community college. But it hasn’t been an easy road they’ve traveled. They’ve (especially Rand) had to face prejudice and ostracism from the citizens of Winston, Rand’s hometown. Their bad luck, because the next town over, Hillman, has thrown open the gates and welcomed Rand and all he represents with open arms.

Red: They did what to Rand because of Stef? Fuckers. I wouldn't build a school in that town either.
But the deputies are cracking me up!
Oh goodness, "I had thought at first that it was the money he represented that they were responding to, but it was also the man himself." I am moving to Hilman! They know an amazing man when they see one!

JL: I love the deputies, but I especially love the sheriff. Have you met him yet?

JL: Prepare yourself for the classic Calmes Time Jump a/k/a Where Stef Gets ADD and Remembers Something. For a Whole Chapter.

Red: LOL I love that explanation. We are going to get TMCSS in this one too right? Like, these two aren't together for most of the book? It's the Calmes way and gives the best reunion sex ever.

JL: Yep, there's TMCSS in this one. It's not nearly as bad as when it happened to Jory/Sam or Jin/Logan though. It doesn't last as long.

Wanna know a secret? *whispers* I like this better than book one. In Timing we got to see Rand and Stef FINALLY pull their heads out of their asses and ride off into the sunset as they start the rest of their lives together, whereas in After the Sunset we get to see, well, what happens after that sunset. I always knew I liked this better but I could never pin down exactly why until this last read. I think hashing it out with Red helped me to understand just what it was that made me read this even more times than I’ve read the first book. I figure it’s most likely because I like established relationships. I’ve been with my husband for twenty years and it’s interesting to me to see other couples who have been together for a while and are still as in love, if not more, as they were at the beginning. Mary does such a fabulous job of showing us just how much these two love each other.

“What are you doing?” I smiled at him, my own hands on his hot skin, having burrowed up under the T-shirt and flannel one he was wearing over it. The muscles in his jaw corded as he shivered slightly.

“I’m lookin’ at you. Christ , I could look at you every day for the rest of my life and never get tired of it.”

They’ve been together for years yet they still can’t seem to get enough of each other.

“Say it now,” I demanded. His lips were on my ear.
“I love you so fucking much, Stef. You belong to me.”
Who knew I would be just as addicted to the man’s words as his actions?

That isn’t to say that they haven’t had their ups and downs though. Stef had to give up a lot when he relocated to Texas to be with Rand and he has abandonment issues from his worthless family so it’s no surprise that he’s kept part of himself back in case things go south with Rand. But, he seems to finally be accepting that Rand isn’t going anywhere and the Red Diamond - and Rand - is the home he really wants. Even if it is in Texas, of all places.

JL: You know that's how Texans really talk, right? We say 'gonna' and 'wanna', we drop the 'g' from the end of our words, we speak in double and triple negatives and our mothers are always 'mama'. I love how she incorporated our way of speaking into her writing. It makes it feel more authentic to me. And a little bit homesick.

Red: Nope I had no idea and it's great she did that! I noticed in Bulletproof, when they were in Hawaii she got a lot of the local talk etc down as well. She does really well with that.

I adore the whole Rand LOVING that Stef is finally choosing them. Rand just gets him on every level and is so patient with him, waiting for Stef to see that he isn't leaving or asking him to leave. Just waiting and loving his man and letting him know he is there for the long haul. That shit is romantic!

Stef gets an opportunity to prove his commitment to Rand when family comes calling. A cousin needs Rand’s help at their ranch for a few days and Rand, being who he is, agrees to lend a hand, not realizing it’s the same weekend that the rodeo is being held. The very important rodeo that requires the Red Diamond to attend or they lose grazing rights on a prime bit of real estate.

Red: Okay and take two... GLLLEEENNNNNNNN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

JL: You're about to meet Glenn! I can't wait to see what your first impression is.

JL: LOL! Our emails crossed. :)

Red: A TEST??? Oh shit. Someone is gonna be pissed when he gets home!

JL: That is an epic scene, when he gets home. EPIC! It's one of my favorite parts of the book.

Red: I have laughed so much already!
“What are you doing in here?”
“I’m mauling Stef. What’s it look like?”

Poor Glenn! LOL

JL: See? Epic! Now you know why I love that scene so much.

Red: I can't help but laugh. Rand is just so point blank about it and Stef is all doing his thing while these people, probably his soon to be in-laws of some sort talk shit about the love of his life and think he works for Rand. SMH.

JL: Mary is big on letting people make assumptions of her MCs. I've seen it with Jory and Jin.
BTW, Lubbock and Midland are real cities in Texas but Winston and Hillman are not. Just a fun fact I'm throwing out there. :)

Stef decides to attend the rodeo in Rand’s stead (behind his back of course, cause that’s how Mary rolls) and this is where we really get to see just how much they’ve grown, both as individuals and with each other. Yes, there are hijinks and shenanigans. Yes, there’s a dance and a bachelor auction and fights and everyone loves Stef. This is a Mary Calmes book after all. But what I loved most was watching Stef interact with Rand’s family and the rodeo community on his own without Rand there. And I saw him shine. I saw him become comfortable in his role as co-owner of the Red Diamond, taking charge and getting things done. I saw him further his relationships with his ranch hands, letting them get closer to him and not keeping them at arms-length.

But most of all, I saw his relationship with Rand strengthen and become enriched with not just love, but respect.

“Why didn’t you tell me you missed this rodeo for the last two years?”
“Because it had nothing to do with you or us, so why would I mention it?”
“Rand, I don’t just wanna know about stuff that affects you and me. I wanna know about everything. And I definitely want to know everything about your family.”
"Rand?"
“Why?”
“Why what?”
“Why do you need to know everything?
“Because if I’m really your partner and you want me to stick around, then your family is my family.”
“You know I want you to stick around.”
“Then?” He took a breath.
“Okay.”
“Okay what?”
“Okay my family is your family, asshole.”

They’ve both matured these past two years and the continuation of their story in this book is one for the ages. Every time I read this story I find myself believing in the world again, believing that there really is true love out there, that there really is such a thing as soulmates. Cause that’s what Rand and Stef are. They are the world to each other. They are each other’s EVERYTHING.

“You’re my whole life.”

Couldn’t have said it better myself.

I really want to give it 1 star but I'm going to give it 2 because I was so happy to see it finally end.

This would have been a Did Not Finish for me after the first chapter, but I was reading it with Bubbles (Dane) and he forced me to finish it.

What I liked:
The only thing I liked about this book was that it had an ending.

What I disliked:

1. It was boring and the plot was totally silly and there were many contradictions from the first book. Usually I can over look some of that, but this was beyond ridiculous.

2. The opening scene didn't make much sense to the rest of the story

3. After that weird opening scene, the next 12 or so % is a flashback filled with NOT HOT sex with too much cheesy sex talk, fluttering holes, and rippling channels. Maybe the purpose was to show how many risky places they could have sex?? I just found it gross. After the flashback there is more sex and by this time I am so confused I don't even know what day it is.

4. Everyone was so obsessed with Rand's sex life and trying to break up him and Stef.

5. Drunk "straight" men couldn't keep their hands of Stef. If I remember correctly, this also happened a lot in the first book.

6. Apparently none of Rand's father's family, excluding Taylor, even knew who Stef was!! Did none of them know who Charlotte's best friend and Man of Honor was??!! They were BFFs for years and Stef and Rand have already been together for 2 years.

7. Rand isn't even in approx. 30% of the book.

8. The rodeo could have been interesting, but the whole back story and reason for Rand's ranch being required to participate was just stupid.

9. Stef had several TSTL moments.

10. Rand and Stef have been together for 2 years and they still have so many secrets from each other. Also, as long as Stef and Charlotte have been best friends, Stef still knows nothing about Charlotte's father's family.

11. Rand has this big plan to make Stef a "house-husband" without Stef knowing it.

I really hope there isn't a third book for Rand and Stef because I really don't think I could read it. But because of #11 above, I expect that there will be more to their story.

Whoa, I'm so over Mary Calmes right now. If you're a fan I apologize in advance for offending y'all but dayum - I'm done. Perhaps the day will come when I embrace her again... but for now? no!

It's the ridiculous little things I've just had enough of, most of you know what I'm talkin' about, I'm sure. The same freaking characters that show up over, and over, and over again. The 30 different words for 'cock' she uses (does she ever actually say cock?). If I never read the words "quivering channel" again I'll be right glad. And the same angsty story lines, the same drama, the same the same the same...

Okay, I've made my point.

Sean Crisden was fine by the way.

Read like an old harlequin.

- Caveman- like top, the hottest man alive, right.
- Twinky, beautiful bottom who has the power to turn nearly every straight man gay.
- insert rough possesive sex
- Family secrets
- Twink saves the day.
- Caveman saves the twink.
- insert rough possesive sex

My biggest quibble with the story was a purely personal one - meat industry. It played such a big part in the story that it really took away from my enjoyment.

"I ain't never seen a man who so wanted to belong and who was scared to, all at the same time. It makes me tired just watchin' you wrestle with yourself."

Two years have passed since Stefan and Rand got together. Things are going great. Both men are adjusting and creating a life together. However, Stefan's old fears are hard to shake. Things can't be this perfect, can they? He's just waiting for the other shoe to drop....putting together an exit strategy just in case. And Rand senses it. And because of that he feels unsettled. He loves the life him and Stefan have built and he'll do anything to keep it.

"After you came, though, suddenly I'm just as excited to go home as everybody else. I open my front door and the music is on, and the lights are on, and the place smells amazing...Even if you're running late and I get in first, just you walkin' in the house makes it feel different. And I get it, ya know? You're it, you're my home."

Family issues pop up for Rand. He has to go away for a few days and help his cousin at his ranch. In the meantime, Stefan discovers that Rand is about to lose his grazing rights on a piece of land shared with his uncle. His uncle wants that land, but Rand won't give it up. An annual rodeo is taking place for grazing landowners and if representatives from Rand's ranch don't show up, he forfeits his rights to the grazing land. So what's Stef to.....he goes off to the Rodeo to save the day.

But in the midst of trying to save Rand's land, having an ugly confrontation with a jealous man and his desperate sister, discovering a shocking secret about the Holloway clan, and a bucking horse...Stefan starts to see his place in the world and in Rand's life.

"You have changed things in Rand's life, given him the home he always wanted, and now you have to realize, yes, everyone makes their own joy, but having you here adds to Rand's. You're the only one who can make him this happy. He's building his life around you."

Without realizing it, little by little Stefan was planting roots. He was building a life, a home...a family.

"When I was with Rand, the tender, loving man he brought out in me who I really was. I was still selfish, still opinionated and quick to get a rise out of, but with him, I was better. He brought out the best in me."

This was a heartwarming, steamy follow up to Stefan and Rand's story. It was great to finally see the two men settling into their lives. I hope Mary Calmes continues their story down the road...an interesting possibility of expanding the family was introduced here and I'd love to see if anything pans out!

Seeing as how the 'Timing' series is one of my all-time favorites and I've read the three books in the series many times over, you can understand my thrill when I discovered the author was re-releasing them, AND adding content to books two and three. Rand and Stefan have always been a part of my favorite couples list and 'After the Sunset' is set two years into their relationship so I get an even better feel of how they are on a day to day basis.

“And as I’ve said a million times, it’s not important that you can’t ride a horse.”
“I can certainly ride a horse,” I declared indignantly.
“No, you can ride your horse because you basically raised her after her mama passed. But any other horse would not allow you to just sit there and do nothing.”
“What’re you—”
“Your horse does everything, Stef. You just hold the reins. She runs when she wants, she walks when she wants, rides into streams when she wants.” He chuckled, his hand sliding down my back and slipping under my T-shirt. “She loves you, same as that damn fool dog. But if you got on any other horse, you’d break your neck.”

I love Stef. I'm pretty sure it's obvious but I thought I'd say it again. Even with all of his quirks and his continuing insecurity that somehow, someday, Rand is just going to decide he has to leave, Rand is crazy in love with the man. Considering Rand is one of the most alpha (non-paranormal) men I've ever met - like not many steps above caveman - being loved by him is something we could all use. Unfortunately in this day and age, most non-fiction men like that are abusers.

"Everybody wants to touch you all the time. I'm the only one who can't when I want to be the only one that can."

After confessing his attraction to Stefan Joss and winning the man's love, Rand Holloway has talked him into moving to his ranch and starting a new life. But Stef has been playing it safe, holding back. Because Stef is a hard man to pin down, and even harder to make stay. But that is what he wants to do for Rand. Make a home, be a family.

So when he takes a job at the local community college two years after saying he will stay, Rand is finally, finally setting down some roots. Because, just maybe, this is the real thing, and Rand will want him as much as he wants Rand.

"I won't ever tell you to pack your things and go, Stef".

So he stays. And meets more of Rand's crazy family. When Rand's cousin shows up at his door, and another calls for his assistance on his dude ranch, it will be the first introduction to Rand's father's side of the family. And the animosity that exists with his uncle. When Rand leaves to help, Stef gets a call for Rand that changes everything - gives him a chance to help Rand and the ranch, stand up as his equal partner to Rand's men, and strut his stuff at a rodeo.

But there is more involved than just showing up, and Stef finds himself in over his head, in more ways than one. Can he help Rand out, or make a mess of things worse than are? Or maybe, can he bring peace to warring family members?

Mary Calmes brings back two of my favorite characters of the past few years, Stef and Rand, in this touching, funny, wonderfully tender and worthy sequel to "Timing". Stef is the perfect man, loyal friend, sexy lover, intelligent businessman, but his feet of clay make him so much more human. And Rand, all sexy and gruff and alpha male, but weak in the knees when Stef looks at him. The two of them together - so sweet and hot and right.

The true test here is how the relationship between these two very different men holds up under the secrets that come to light. And Stef's determination to bring the family together for Rand, no matter the cost to himself. It is a joy to watch, under Ms. Calmes' firm hand, gentle touch and expert pacing, as Stef drives the action, first at the ranch, then the rodeo. His commitment to be true to his relationship with Rand is so refreshing, so clear and just so...Stef.

The astonishing thing here is how very real these two have become. They have grown since "Timing", and become settled in their skins. It would be so easy for Stef to stay the cute and cold user, and Rand the silent and stuffy jerk, but theie time together has softened the edges and allowed them to blur a little into one another.

And really, isn't that what we all want? A partner to rest and lean on when we are weak, and to be there for them when they need to be the weak one? And that is what makes Ms.Calmes' works so great - she gets that men need each other. And we need to be reminded of it.

One of my favorite works of this year. Hell, of any year!

I enjoyed this story a lot more than the first one. This isn't a typical romance in that the story doesn't really revolve around the two main characters, though their relationship is at the heart of the story. As with the first book, their time together is minimal, but unlike the first book, I didn't totally hate it.

Since the conclusion of book one, Stefan has been living at the Red Diamond Ranch with Rand for about two years now. When Rand starts talking about taking their relationship to the next level (i.e., marriage and children), Stefan decided it was time to try bringing Rand's extended family closer. They are a stubborn group - all with terrible tempers - but they genuinely care about each other. The problem is they can't stand being in the same room with each other for more than 15 minutes. Stefan felt that airing out differences and building stronger relationships were necessary for the happiness of his future family.

A rodeo in which Rand's uncle and cousin were participating in a few towns over gave him the perfect opportunity to get to know them and understand the animosity they had toward Rand. That is the main focus of this story. Past relationships are explored, family serects are revealed, and new friendships are made. Another reviewer described this story as "the drama of the Holloways," and that really isn't far off.

I bought the audiobook to listen to while reading, but it was like a condensed version of the digital story, so I had to abandon it early on. Entire paragraphs were deleted, conversations were shortened, altered, or left out completely, and most annoyingly, minute details that added much needed depth to relationships or nuance to situations were nowhere to be found. I tried to listen for a while and then go back to add in the missing information, but that became too tiring, so I just stopped altogether.

Because the MCs were already in love and were never in any danger of anything bad happening to them or their relationship (well, other than Stefan possibly being thrown from a horse 😕), I thought this story was pretty relaxing to read. I liked learning more about Rand's family, and I especially loved the way he cherished and adored Stefan. This isn't the kind of story I normally like reading, but I was obviously in the mood for something laid back and easy to digest, so this gets 4 stars from me. 🤠 ❤️

This is fun. Having just done a re-read in June I figured I'd just breeze through. Nope. It was just as much fun as the first and second and third and well, all the times. Bring on Glenn!

Re-Read #2, 2022 in preparation for the new version of When the Dust Settles

Oh man, that end. That is exactly what this book needed to make it even better than the perfection it already was.

I'm so glad Mary took the time to revisit this story and add to it what she herself felt like it needed. She was not wrong and she did a fantastic job in the update.

Bring on Glenn's new and improved story. I CANNOT WAITTTTTTTT!!!

Once again, buddy reading this with my best gal, Jenni Lea!!!

See our review that has earned us a dual proclaimed tagline of "Damn! We're chatty!" on the blog and then here! Beware, we go a bit nuts with this one, but it's fun!

We bless the Goddess Calmes
We anoint the Alpha Male growling Mine
We trust that the Golden boy knows the way
We over dose on the crack of the Devine.

Another great book finished. I read it too fast. Let me tell you Stef has got to be one of my favorite people. I love him. I loved him even better in this book, both him and Rand. There was a lot of people I enjoyed in here. I really really hope there's going to be another book in the series...

Update: 11/20/16... Rereading this one again, so I can read the third book in the series. Another beautiful cover.
****This was even better the second around. Just like I said before I love Stef and Rand. ****

**Audio Re-Read**

This, more than the first, has more of that Jory vibe and whatever, bring it.

Stefan really gets into in this one doesn't he? His head and heart are for sure in the right place but man, he just jumps all in.

I forgot just how much this story gets me excited for Glenn's book.

I'm such a sucker for Mary Calmes books and characters. I love that we get to revisit Stefan and Rand two years later to see how life treating them on the Red Diamond.

If I had a complaint it would be that they don't spend enough time together and that's a shame. When they are together it's wonderful to read, they have a sharp compelling chemistry and I couldn't see either one of these guys with anyone else. I love the snapshot of ranch life and wish we'd gotten more of that.

I don't know that we'll ever see another in this series, I wish we would because I love these guys and I think there are more stories to tell on the ranch. It does give nice closure though and anything that gives me more Stefan and Rand is a welcome read.

I really enjoyed this series. If you are looking for a fun read this book is for you.
Stefan and Rand one of my favorite couple.

Two years after riding off into the sunset with ranch owner Rand Holloway.Stefan has made a tentative peace with his new life, teaching at a community college.

Finally, after recognizing how unfair he's being, Stef makes a commitment, and Rand is over the moon.

And so am I.

What I like most is the introduction of so many new Characters.I hope the series continues. This series brings a smile to my face and I want to read more of it.

Would I fall for a possessive, domineering, heteronormative alpha because he's hot, loyal, larger than life and at the moment I have him wrapped around my finger while he dreams that I raise our children and spent most of my days at home? Certainly not but if Mary Calmes weaves a tale with such a guy it's a complete other story. Suddenly it might the best that could happen if you're strong enough, if everything fits together and the darker sides of your partner are only directed against others ... then it becomes a tempting dream until you're closing the book and your brains sets in again but even then it's a nice fantasy of what life could be if love conquers all and is strong and solid enough and isn't that exactly why we're reading romances?
