Sadly, I didn't enjoy this novel as much as I wish, considering the fact that I watch E-sports and play a few shares of games -- mostly MMO(RPG), RTS, and FPS. I'm a huge fan of whatever occupies the book's main point. Literally me and my homies' definition of life. But something is off in this one. Man, it's just not my cup of tea.
I have seen its anime adaptation, though, and it's quite great, really. I enjoy it. So maybe I'll stick to anime when it comes to books like this.
Well, this book is about a fictional e-sports game called Glory and one man's struggle to return to the top after being forced out of the pro-scene. I first watched the donghua, The King's Avatar, on a whim and subsequently became enthralled with it. I liked the cast of characters, the detailed world, and experiencing an MMO world through the perspective of an expert. However, the donghua was very fast paced and a lot of details about the game mechanics and some other stuff was missing. After enjoying the donghua, I wanted more. And so, here I am, reading this.
Since I already knew what to expect to a certain extent, I won't really comment on the story or characters, except to say that I like them. However, the writing is a bit meh. There are a lot of exaggerations used to describe emotions like "two streams of tears", "coughing up blood", etc. It's a little annoying, but once you get used to it, you can ignore it. Even ignoring that, the writing is just alright. Hence, four stars instead of five.
Note: The chapter breakup of the first 11 volumes is from https://the-kings-avatar.fandom.com/w.... For volumes 12-26, I just divided the remaining chapters equally among all volumes (with the extra 4 left over going into volume 26).
Love the anime, the live action series and the novel. I am near the playoffs now and still reading. Chapter 1342 of 1728. about 8-12 hours per 200 chapters, so a very long read. You have to skip some repetitive parts, but overall very worthwhile.
