- “Good managers will not make excuses. They will not procrastinate. Instead, they will achieve results.”
- “The people who work for you perform best when what you say is consistent and frequent”
- “Trust can take a long time to build, but it can be lost in a single event when integrity has been violated, and it is extremely difficult, sometimes impossible, to regain.”
- “Set challenging targets for your employees and verbalize your confidence in their ability to hit these targets.”
- “Employees take their cues from the manager and reflect their manager’s behavior.”
- “What you do in a critical incident gives the members of your team permission to do exactly that, even when they are not in a critical incident!”
- “Don’t accept excuses from yourself or others. Likewise, don’t blame someone or something else for your lack of results. Accept responsibility.”
- “The mindset of managers plays a crucial role in the results they deliver and the success they achieve. Every manager’s actions and behaviors reflect this mindset.”
- “Managers will only get better when they take responsibility for getting better”

Thank you Good Reads First Reads for the opportunity to receive a free advance readers copy of this book.

I don't often give business books five stars, but this was one I really enjoyed. It wasn't that there was anything in here that was necessarily unique, but it was a great approach to getting results. The books is based upon four basic fundamentals:

1. Grow Revenue
2. Get new customers
3. Keep the customers you already have
4. Reduce costs

Anything else just gets in the way of getting results and you should look at those items carefully.

A great approach to getting the most out of your staff through accountability. This book is an essential read for any manager.

Another business book from another retired CEO, blah, blah, blah. Some intersting insights, but Strigl never mentions that fact that not every company or individual can follow the same blueprint for success. Just as the hysteria over Jack Welch's philosophy drew numerous companies to implement approaches they were not culturally fit to attempt, so too are the ideas in this book more pesonal than practical. Food for thought, but not to be taken as a blueprint for success.

I enjoyed reading this because Denny Strigl was the COO of Verizon for several years while I was there. The book was written before that, while he was the head of Verizon Wireless, so the stories he uses are all from Verizon Wireless. It was interesting to understand his take on various behaviors, both good and bad.

You only need one book to learn how to be a great manager, this one. I appreciate this book because I work at Verizon and this book goes into detail on the history of its culture. I enjoyed it on many levels and learned a lot.
