Amrit is an honest and aggressive police officer who is driven by a desire to rid society of criminals. His virtuous campaign is impeded when he is charged with the murder of a man he tried to arrest. Harvard-educated lawyer Sukumar pleads Amrit’s bail, and learns interesting details about Amrit’s family and friends. He also contests Amrit’s friend Ajay’s case, and here an abundance of wealth works like a poison in the absence of values.
Set in the fictional town of Rajapur, the novel tells the story of two generations from 1990 to 2016. There are situations where villains disguise themselves as innocent individuals to take advantage of the unsuspecting nature of credulous people. Advocate Sukumar frequently quotes from Hitopadesh to emphasize the importance of being careful to avoid being deceived by the wolves in sheep’s clothing. Will he be able to swing a verdict in Amrit’s favor?
The novel also raises an important issue on the accountability of the police. Are honest police officers justified in overstepping the boundaries of the law for good reasons?
The narration starts with a diary of a high profile lawyer who worships his profession like anything.
A devoted person who admires and follows Upnishad diligently. He does what he preaches, he preaches what he does.
This attitude of lawyer Sukumar is commendable. I specially liked the diary part where Sukumar has been portrayed as the main character.
Since the beginning, its story grips you tightly. As the story proceeded, I was left to thinking who was Upendra and what's his importance in the book. I was impressed to see how tactfully Govind Sharma has chosen to reveal each and every character.
It was a full entertainment to watch how the students of same college who were just having fun and adventurous life few days back, turned into grown ups and in a cold-bad world, some of them also became evil.
State vs Amrit Kumar is a story of fighting from the evil to get the justice.
Amrit Kumar's character will be related to themselves by many readers. His honesty, aggression and determination is something everyone will want in their life.
Upendra's answer to why he is studying college when all he wants to become in life is a priest! was impressive.
The author has taken the theme of the book to a whole different level. It is great to know how the author's characters come from a small village and does the astounding.
He takes common-everyday characters and shows you a lot of things to learn from them.
Reading his both books, I think the author has created a new kind of genre in literature.
Short, precise and to the point narration is the specialty of the author. Something most of the readers appreciate.
If I'm asked which book of Govind Sharma is my favorite, then it would definitely be State vs Amrit Kumar. I'm fascinated by the cover of his books.
I got this book from a LibraryThing giveaway and I am so thankful to it.
Even though the title of the book makes it sound like a courtroom thriller, it is certainly not. The story of this book is very, very unique. Its a story of the fight between good and evil, between the truth and falsity. The message 'Satyameva Jayate' (Truth alone Triumphs) has been delivered to the reader in an elaborate manner. What I really loved about this book is that it has many philosophical messages here and there like the basic character of a person can never change, only a man of action is a wise man and so on.
Now coming to the story, the story takes places in the fictional town of Rajapur and unravels the story of two generations from 1990 to 2016. The story is divided into two parts - the first part is about Upendra and Sohan and the second part is about their children, Amrit and Ajay.
I loved the way the story has been blended with Indian culture. Also, the character-building of each and every character was very realistic (especially Amrit's). The story is fast-paced as it takes you through two generations in just 158 pages.
The novel starts of with the student council elections in Rajapur College and takes us through corruption, treachery, crime, sufferings of the good people and ends in a really good note.
I personally feel that the main idea or value delivered by this book is that 'all the wealth of the world is a waste unless one has strong moral values and love for fellow human beings' (as said by Ajay in Page 156).
I highly recommend this book to everyone, especially those who are looking for a unique read that could be both entertaining and enlightening.
I was excited to receive a message from the author informing me about his second book and asking whether I was interested in reviewing the same. What attracted me specifically was its title “State vs Amrit Kumar” which gave me an idea it would probably be a case diary of a judicial battle which is likely to include the police investigation procedure which is something of my interest and so my answer was a big yes.
Now coming back to the book, the plot starts with a diary entry of Advocate Sukumar, a leading criminal defense lawyer who initially shares his approach in studying a case and also his strengths which gained him an above 95% success rate. Adv. Sukumar then shares insights about a case of Amrit Kumar, one of the protagonists, an honest but aggressive police officer who strives to make the society crime free but is falsely charged with a murder case. Adv. Sukumar tries studying the case by learning about Amrit’s past introducing many key characters like how Amrit’s father met Madhu, their marriage etc. and as the story builds up intricate details are revealed at various stages that may help the advocate free Amrit Kumar from the case. Will Amrit be acquitted of the murder charges by Adv. Sukumar or will judicial system fail and Amrit be punished as planned by his adversaries is for you to find out!
The plot is set in a fictional town of Rajapur tells the story about two generations giving the plot two different chronological phases making the reader glued to the elaborate storyline. The characters in this plot are well developed and feel authentic. It also portrays how the innocent and god fearing people are often taken advantage due to their unsuspecting nature. I also enjoyed the use of beautiful quotes from Hitopadesh which was apt to the situation and the illustration in page 142 further elevated its influence on the reader. This clearly exhibits how Dr.Govind Sharma as an author has matured when compared to his debut work Anant Dot Com where his attempts to share the teachings from Ramcharitmanas felt more as a distraction.
Overall, State vs Amrit Kumar is a perfect blend of fiction and moral values with an elaborate plot that succeeds the reader glued to the storyline even when it tells the story of two generations along with the well developed and authentic characters making this book one excellent read. Also, the pertinent use of the beautiful quotes from Hitopadesh further elevates the book to another level. Excited to get my hands on his next book. Highly recommended.
The name of the book suggests it is a courtroom drama but it is nothing like of the sort. The story is about justice against the fraudulent, win against the odds and right above wrong. It is a story of a young inspector Amrit Kumar who desire to eliminate crime and corruption out of the veins of the system and society and ready to go to any extent to perform his duty. He is young, honest and devoted towards his duty of police inspector.
The story begins from students council elections of Rajapur College which is going to be held after a gap of five years. The elections for the seat of General Secretary is won by Madhu but lost her heart to another candidate for the same seat Upendra, they later got married. Amrit is a son of Madhu and Upendra and wants to follow the path of his maternal uncle Jayant who was a police inspector and died performing his duty. Amrit too is like his uncle, aggressive, young and dutiful. He is charged with the murder of a man. Will advocate Sukumar swing a verdict in Amrit’s favor?
The story moves at a fast pace, its USP. There are turns of events and twists which lead one thing after other and do not give the reader much time to think. The story has elements of crime, corruption, politics, and youth engagement in illicit activities. All and all it is a good book based in a small and fictional town of Rajapur.
I started reading this book with the impression that it could be about courtroom thriller as the title and the jacket of the book suggest. But courtroom was no where near in the entire story.
There was no State vs Amrit, no prosecution vs defence. It was a mere narrative written about a bunch of college going students and their aftermath life.
Amrit's story comes in the second half of the book. First half of the book is about Amrit's parents and how their blissful life was destroyed by conspiracy and plotting.
Reading the book was like reading the script of some bollywood movie which has hero, heroine, villain, drama and treachery. Every bollywood masala.
State vs Amrit Kumar by Dr Govind Sharma an retired Ias officer. In his second novel he beautifully given out the story of an aggressive police officer moreover who have a very sensitive flash back. A very well written novel encloses true side and dirty side of politics, friendship, love, affairs.
The story starts from Advocate sukumar's office, where the case of Inspector Amrit Kumar who is well known for his honesty all through his service where suspects in murder case or in other way for taking law in his hands. But what is the truth behind? Who had won in the end?
Read State vs Amrit Kumar for further, which plotted the detail fictional story of Amrit Kumar from past to present so grippingly, the narrative and the language simple, lucid and clear. You can link this story into any cop plays still it stands because for the reflection of reality. It also says the philosophical of how to lead life with hitopadesh Quotes which is delight to read.
May be the evil wins the battle but the honesty stands till the end and spoke the truth. An happy ending for the fictional tale but in reality the politics like this continues mafias were still ruling the under world, also the religious parts said were also essential for all the ages to follow. An applause for the writer Govind Sharma sir to giving out a mirror story of current world in his one fifty eight pages.
My rating on 'State vs Amrit kumar, a novel' is 4/5.
SPOILER FREE REVIEW !! RECEIVED THIS BOOK FROM AUTHOR ... This is my 2nd book of the author.Must mention that respected author Mr.Sharma is very kind and ground to earth person. The first book was very good so when I was asked if I would like to read and review the second book I was very happy and Honored. This book is very interesting with the fact that it is based on the story of a honest police officer in India, which inspired me to read this book.I won't include any spoiler . The novel tells story of 2 generations and emphasizes on the fact that honest and genuine persons do have to suffer in their life by bad people of society.I really liked the quotes shared from Hitopdesh in between the story at perfect places which tells us to be careful in life from deceivers.I would definitely recommend this book to every one who would like a serious but fast paced story with reality and political references in it.would love to read more books written by Him again . Best of luck in life !!
Author Govind Sharma ji's narration is so good. One can't leave the book without completely finishing it. This book is a breathe of fresh air from the regular romance novels, and makes me proud to read an Indian Author. The characters are also nicely weaved.
Story is set in a fictional small town in the northern part of India. Which would make any reader easily be emotionally connected.
There are several societal elements discussed in this book, in the form of characters facing that. Say, having issues with being 'moral' or not; how families force traditions on children; how going through childhood trauma could lead to anger issues. And many more things combined! Which makes one think.
The plot also brings in spotlight how corruption, bribery affect honest officers too and sometimes, they can fall in that trap too. Which is often what happens in India.
A good, easy-to-read story which shall make you see India and all its things that are hidden in 158 pages.
A classic book on how honest officers gets framed despite their sincere attempt to clean up the system by eliminating the criminals. Dr Sharma has used all his experience having served the Indian Govt as a Civil Servant which is clearly evident in this book.
The story begins with Madhu approaching Advocate Sukumar who has an impressive record of more than 95% success rate in his appearance to save his son Police Officer Amrit who has been fabricated in a case with false evidence. Adv Sukumar charged Rs,25 Lakhs per appearance which was too expensive for Madhu to bear but found the backing of an NGO based in Switzerland.
A thorough investigation by Adv Sukumar reveals the background of Madhu who got married to Upendra despite defeating him in the college election. They gave birth to Amrit and when he was just 2 years old, Upendra gets fabricated with false allegations and was sentenced to jail where he gets killed.
Madhu and Amrit now finds shelter from Jayant who is none other than Madhu's brother who was a Police Officer himself. He later gets promoted as an ACP. When he tries to halt some illegal activities, he gets killed as well. Amrit was just 6 years old then and he witnesses the brutal murder.
Amrit vows to become a Police Officer despite having the intelligence of either becoming a Doctor or an IAS Officer. The people who were responsible for the death of his father and uncle comes back to haunt him as well. How did he deal with them and why does an NGO from Switzerland has paid fees to Adv Sukumar to appear for Amrit is the story.
Some of the characters which played a vital role in shaping of the story includes Sohan, Aditya, Smita, Shobha, Nisha, Sandy,Adarsh,Aman,Chaddha, Kakosa,Ajay.
The story has made all the above mentioned characters live in front of my eyes till it ended which shows how meticulously the story has been penned by the author. A great read, I must say.
Sorry for being too late - i received the book two days back - i was struct in giving exams rather test , i am really astonished the way u weave characters and i must say there were too many characters and all were well explained as we see the end of the novel , initially the first few chapters were making any u sense but after-all it was justified and i am really amused - how the hell u connect things , the way u used hitopadesh teaching in a very appropriate manner like u did on pg-142 , and offcourse teaching i love,"udyamen hi sidhanti karyani na manorathe . Na he sushpat singhasya pravisyanti mukhe mriga". One thing i have came across that in both books- this and Anant Dot Com u were rooted to our own culture and blend it exquisitely with a magical touch , i really liked it and it is a goodread (:p) i must say and the way u use hindi words alot was also connecting me to comprehend better , i am grateful u have sent me the book and thank you very much. -yours faithfully
4.25 actually This story mainly focuses on the politics and crimes of Rajapur. Even though the title refers to Amrit Kumar , a honest police officer, he is only plays a little part of the entire picture. But I really liked the way in which events are presented and the flow of the story is just awesome.A quick and capturing read indeed!
I had purchased this book on Kindle six months ago, and finally read it today, thanks to the lockdown. The narration is interesting and the language is simple, which makes it a compelling read.
The book starts with diary of Sukumar, who is a criminal defense lawyer graduated from Harvard Law School. His favourite book is - Hitopadesh, the teachings of which has been a guiding force of his life.
In his diary, he discuss about two cases of different personalities. The first one is the case of Ajay who used his money to indulge in every possible way and finally he landed in jail in a criminal case filed by his close relatives, and other to that is the case of a police officer with high moral values named Amrit Kumar who has been accused of a murder he didn't commit.
The novel really is very intriguing. It mostly talks about the life Amrit but he himself appears very late in the scene. It shows about the romance, tragedy, politics and almost all the other incidents happens in a person’s life. There is the use of multiple characters, which might get confusing for someone who is a beginner in reading but it will definitely interest the keen readers.
The author uses various quotations from Hitopadesh which is great. And the cover is very simple yet amazing. Though I felt that the title whereas seems to indicate towards some trials, the plot mostly moves from start to end of their lives.
The language used in the novel is simple and easy to understand. The narration of story is wonderful and the scenes seems like - as if they are happening in real front of your eyes and you just get deeply involved with the story and will try to finish it as quickly as possible.
The book carries a suspense althrough and the way things reveal themselves and fills the plot is very impressive. Recommended to those who want to read some simple yet intriguing and mysterious read.
I received the book State Vs Amrit Kumar in a giveaway by Dr. Govind Sharma. The book takes us on a ride through the lives of people of a fictional village of Rajapura. All of whom are from varied backgrounds and personalities. The story is set at just the right pace, neither too fast to make it confusing nor too slow to make it boring. The quotes from Hitopadesh though slightly confusing for an inexperienced add to the essence of the book and helps establish the distinctive narrative style of Sukumar's diary. The narrative is casual and slightly amateur but it makes the book more real and enables readers to empathize with the characters. Certain dialogues are filled with Jargon but it hardly hinders the readers experience while showing the doctorish side of the author. The narrative also has Indian slang which makes the characters and the torn more realistic. In all the story is a fresh concept and allows an insight into the politics and injustices of the Indian society. It's more than worth a read.
"State Vs Amrit Kumar" has got all the essential elements for which it can be easily conceptualized in to a super-hit bollywood movie. Even one will not need a plot writer, while reading the novel one can have a complete feel of watching a movie. This novel is entirely different from the other creations of the writer and kudos to the writer for the diversity in his writings among the books. All books from this man focuses on genuinely different subjects. "The plot, surprise entry of the characters, maintaining the suspense till the end and the final surprise in the climax" make this piece of writing completely outstanding.
Its a very light read with a highly gripping narration. There is an amalgamation of all kind of characters in this book, one can indeed learn what to do and especially what to not do.
Thanks again Govind Sir for producing this master piece.
The book deals with a topic that is pertinent to today's times in India. The fight of good over evil and that of bureaucracy with civilians. All this narrated through the eyes of a group of college-going kids. Where their lives take them after that, down divergent, yet parallel, paths, is the crux of the story.
The start of the book is a trifle slow, as it introduces the characters - and there are very many of them! It took a while to sort them out in my mind. The individual stories of the kids are interesting but the characters could have been fleshed out a bit more. The transitions too seemed a bit abrupt.
However, that said, the story provides a good base for a Bollywood-style movie and I would not be surprised if some day, the book itself, or its concept, gets snapped up by a film maker.
I got this book from Goodreads in exchange for an honest review. The narration style is unique as the author doesn't beat around the bush. The introduction and appearance of the characters are relevant and descriptive enough. The way the teachings of "Hitopadesh" is used is remarkable and it justifies the decisions and actions of the narrator. I was impressed with this book as its short but intense.
The title is evident - It is a book written by a bureaucrat or a diplomat. The narrative is sharp and to the point. There is no beating around the bush. The story shares glimpses of movie script and in all probability the book could itself end as a Bollywood movie. Waiting to read more works by the author.
This was an interesting read. Light read, coffee table kind of book. Given the author background, i just can't help but to wonder some parts of this story are true? Amrit character sure does leave a impression. I wanted more of part two then part one(just my personal wish). The epilogue seems to be rushed. I wanted to know what would be the reactions of Madhu and Amrit, after Smitha's revelation.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I got this book as part of LT giveaway. I really enjoyed the plot but I didn’t understand the purpose of writing this book in lawyer’s perspective. After all the effort he does to document the entire story and his relevant Hitopadesha, his active role in the plot is rushed through. This is a crime narrative with inspiration from Aesop’s fables where there is event, consequence and moral. but definitely no court room drama or police action. I wonder who writes about detailed case stories backing to several years in their personal diary. Some characters are introduced suddenly and explained later. Read this book for plot but not narrative or writing skills.
Firstly, I'd like to thank Dr. Govind for the copy of this book. I greatly appreciate it, and here is my honest opinion upon reading this book. The reader is bombarded with loads of characters from the very first page until the very last. It is difficult to keep track of so many characters. The story lacks flow and thus feels like a fact more than a story with its short and abrupt sentences. The narrative also gets clouded and shifts from 3rd person to 1st person. The story would have benefited from a more detailed description and lesser characters and more depth to the plot. I had higher hopes for the book.
A simple story consisting of too many characters. It looks like you are watching a movie of 70s. I feel like author should develop the characters more. I like the idea of connecting incidents with messages from Hitopdesh. It has touch of religious upbringing of author and his liking. I will like call that a nice deft touch.
"STATE vs AMRIT KUMAR is a great novel that speaks about the fight between good and the evil in a very much practical and simple approach. It talks about the struggle between the good people and the opposite ones . The misfortunes and the sufferings the good people have to undergo because of their innocence and ignorance are depicted in a beautiful manner . The message "Ultimately the truth triumphs" is driven effectively with the various incidents strewn throughout the novel in a chronological order as they involve people from two generation.
The second part of the blurb on the cover of the book is as follows.
Set in the fictional town of Rajapur , the novel tells the story of two generation from 1990 to 2016. There are situations where villains disguise themselves as innocent individuals to the advantage of the unsuspecting nature of credulous people . Advocate Sukumar frequently quotes from Hitopadesh to emphasize the importance of being careful to avoid being deceived by the wolves in sheep's clothing . Will he be able to swing a verdict in Amrit's favour?
The plot
The story starts from the self -introduction of Advocate Sukumar and how he happens to deal with the challenging case of Amrit and Ajay the protagonists. Upto chapter 21 the story of the first generation involving Upendra father of Amrit and thereafter it tells about Amrit. Upendra was studying in a college at Rajapur and there he met Madhu . They got married and sta rted their new journey from the famous temple of Rajapur. He met many an obstacle due to the cunningness and cruelty of the bad people with ulterior motives and finally it takes to his downfall. In the second part we come across the same people giving trouble to Amrit and he is trapped in a false case.
The pro
The story discusses about the religious people who are pious and God fearing and also the inhuman and characterless ones who indulge in all sort of crimes. Upendra are destined to be a patsy to be victimized by the wicked and evil persons. The drama of heist occurring in the temple is explained in a nice manner to be easily understood by the readers. It is a great delight to get so many informations regarding functioning of the temple authority to other social duties.
The con
There are some grammatical errors and spelling mistakes . The language is also very simple. Instead of" St.Stephens" it is given as saint Stephens. Since the book involves two generation so many happenings are given in a hurried manner.
My favorite
One of the protagonist namely Amrit's story is very fantastic . I like the character because it is portrayed in a realistic way. The narration is so impressive that we sympathize with him for all his pains and sufferings.
All the characters are either good or evil and it applies. Both the extreme we come across.
Due to good reviews I chose to pick this book as my next read. The title suggested it would be more of a court case than a story but I was proven wrong. Nevertheless, I liked this book and it has a unique and captive storyline.
The novel is basically a representation of historical facts leading to the current case handled by a lawyer. It details the nature of Amrit, the main protagonists, parents, how they met and got married, their family backgrounds and the birth of Amrit. This was the first part of the book. The second part details the upbringing of Amrit and his traumatic past.
Book is a very fast paced novel with a captive narration of events. A lot of characters but every character is unique in a way. Book basically tries to portray that you cannot change the basic nature of any human being. Though I agree the title is not justifiable but still at end of the book you get the feeling of completeness.
Overall a great read and I rate is 4/5 for minor errors which can be overseen.

Story in a nutshell: State vs Amrit Kumar is a story of a police officer Amrit Kumar who is held responsible for a crime. He has been honest throughout the years of his service. He has been framed by the corrupt people. Will lawyer Sukumar be successful in helping Amrit Kumar win this battle that life has thrown against him? Review: Reading about court proceedings have always enthralled me. State vs Amrit Kumar is an amazing story that will leave you spellbound. It has realism which is found missing in novels now-a-days. It has all elements that will make a good movie. The story is set in a fictional town of Rajapur. It is divided into parts. The first impression when I started reading this story was a confusing one. I didn't know where the story was taking me. Over time, I was cleared of my confusion and I realised the essence of the story. As the story is divided into parts, the narration is done in third as well as first person narrative. The language is lucid and simple. The fluent narration and a compact storyline keeps the reader hooked onto this story. This novel is fast-paced and the readers will never feel bored at any point of time, throughout the read. Merits: The story is not buttered up with those filmy court scenes. There is realism, something I adore this novel for. I liked the way the author has talked about the research the lawyer does in order to have a clear picture of Amrit's background. I liked the quotings from Hitopadesh. They seemed like cherries on the cake. I rate: Cover: 3.5/5 Characters: 3.5/5 Story: 4/5 I rate 'State vs Amrit Kumar' with 4/5 stars.
The novel is like a Bollywood movie it has all the elements like a virtuous hero, a strong and ideal mother, a beautiful girl, a treacherous villain, goons and side kicks, corrupt society and businessmen who are corrupting the society and exploiting peoples, and a happy ending where the hero wins and everything becomes all good. The novel is bit slow in the beginning because it tries to connect all the dots and create grounds for story as it elaborates about characters and there mental state, use of lines of hitopadesha, the bhakti of lord krishna as up-lifters of the people in need.
whole of the novel is well written and i really liked it.
