Robert Kirkman is an American comic book writer best known for his work on The Walking Dead, Invincible for Image Comics, as well as Ultimate X-Men and Marvel Zombies for Marvel Comics. He has also collaborated with Image Comics co-founder Todd McFarlane on the series Haunt. He is one of the five partners of Image Comics, and the only one of the five who was not one of the original co-founders of that publisher.

Robert Kirkman's first comic books were self-published under his own Funk-o-Tron label. Along with childhood friend Tony Moore, Kirkman created Battle Pope which was published in late 2001. Battle Pope ran for over 2 years along with other Funk-o-Tron published books such as InkPunks and Double Take.

In July of 2002, Robert's first work for another company began, with a 4-part SuperPatriot series for Image, along with Battle Pope backup story artist Cory Walker. Robert's creator-owned projects followed shortly thereafter, including Tech Jacket, Invincible and Walking Dead.

Two major things happen in this volume: The first, I'm not sure how I feel about it. It comes out of nowhere, but it serves a story purpose for the second item. I'm not sure if it exactly fits deus ex machina territory, but there was little explanation and because we are at the end of the series, I'd be surprised if it is revisited. It results in a very well done emotional moment though.

The second item is basically the straw that broke the camel's back. Mark and family get forced into the war with a very intense, nerve-wracking scene. One of those rare times that as a reader, you are totally in the moment and riding along with the characters on the emotional roller-coaster, unable to see the "obvious after you think about it" resolution.

The last few issues had an artist change, who I didn't really care for. Just seemed more cartoony and maybe less "refined".

Everything is setup for the inevitable final conflict. Looking forward to it.

I can't believe it will all end in the next hardcover. Certainly one of the best comic book series of this era.

Man. I'm so glad I didn't start this sooner and have to wait an entire year between this volume and the final volume (May 17 through May 18).

A lot happens in this book. Mark has a choice that could save millions but also means he would have to lose a family member. The characters continue to develop and the story continues to provide unexpected twists. Kirkman has done a fantastic job with this series and I am looking forward to the final chapter to see how things shake out.

I read the single issues which will make up this volume and it's terrific. You can tell this series may end soon since bigger and bigger things keep happening.

What's the trend for Marvel and DC Comics the past 10 years? Rebooting their heroes every few years. Well this collection contains an arc called "Reboot" which is an interesting look back and also a meta commentary on all those events from other companies.

Robot and Thragg continue to make plans for their evil goals which leads to another attack upon Mark, Atom Eve and their daughter. The last issue will reopen the wounded gut you had and rip it out yet again.

Would’ve given it 5 stars if not for how bad the Reboot arc was as well as how fucking stupid Oliver’s death was

Invincible is the best escapist comic on the shelves. Deal with it, world. In addition to being a violent masterpiece, Kirkman still manages to throw in some emotional depth and sticky moral debates in a way that drives the story. At the same time, it's so wild an unpredictable that it's hard to put down. For example, they didn't forget about Anissa. Where is that going? I have to know! There are dozens of little relationships that have an intriguing arc of their own in addition to the long-running Viltrumite saga.
5 stars for a crazy good book.
2 stars for having to wait at least another year for the next (and final?) volume.

I will mention one caveat. The ending of this one is abrupt and not sold particularly well. A bit of boom splat pow-see you next time! I still love this comic though.

This book, like all the other Invincible books is totally unafraid to make bold and painful choices and make the reader suffer along with those choices, even as it pretends to be a regualr superhero book where the reader should feel safe.

Also, what happened to everyone's eyes? I forget if it's this volume or the last volume, but every character now looks like he or she is squinting (at least relative to the large-eyed versions in the previous 100 issues.)

i keep reading this series because it's everything comics should be: widescreen, braindead, surprisingly "woke," addictive in a sort of dragonball z sense, and bloody as hell. pure escapist entertainment. too bad it needs to be ignored for years, then read in a hurry, to be enjoyed (the issues are always late!).

This book was a big of a distraction from the previous volumes blunder. The biggest thing with storylines, you need to build a quick bridge and run across, don't look back at the past. Invincible has now settled on the alien world and is back with friends and his brother. There is a pivotal moment here and it finally showcases the decisions Invincible has made, some which have resulted in the deaths of many. Kirkman continues the unpredictable moments but also lingers in the predictable ones as well. The artwork continues to be impressive, it's one of the best things about this series, the alien worlds flourish.

Kirkman treads water with the characters for a while and attempts a few twists and turns, some that work and some that are purely for the running space. Make no mistake, this is heading the arc towards the conclusion and our villain is out to kill Invincible. The biggest part of this storyline is a trip to the past where Invincible has the opportunity to make right on the many wrongs. He essentially has the opportunity to pave a new future and in this moment he chooses something I never expected but when you look at the story, Kirkman was never going to rob us of the hundreds of issues arc. Was he correct in this decision? Time will tell of course.

The Rex storyline continues back takes a back seat to the confrontation between our villain and Invincible. We are left with a confronting battle that could have been an epic cliff-hanger for the next volume but in Kirkman fashion is resolved straight away. It is a bloody moment which was shocking and epic, but in the end it was not that amazing. Why not leave that moment hanging? Fans know it was going to be solved but that was a prized moment. I know fans think Kirkman is unpredictable but I really do argue this point with his writing.

Why the 4?

The book recovered a lot of the disappointment from the last volume. The time travel sequence was emotional and would have been tough for our hero, the final choice was interesting. I hope this series ends on a high but I don't have high expectations for this ending to be epic. The series continues to be a bloody ride that hasn't come full circle. There are lingering villains to be resolved and the series looks to cram everything into this next volume. It could be good but I still don't have this series in the same category as Walking Dead, that is still Kirkman's masterpiece.

My next book is Preacher Volume 3, which I finished as well on the weekend.

Invincible Ultimate Collection vol 11 is the ultimate setup for a climactic conclusion to this incredible series.

This volume starts up by setting the stage for our main characters. The rebel heroes on Earth make their prison escape just to have Rex win them over to his side in the end. Eve and Mark continue to adjust to their new lives on Telescria, parenthood, and Mark’s new job with the Coalition of Planets when he finds himself sucked back into the past. This makes for a fun arc where Mark is reliving Volume 1 of this series with his knowledge of past events, and how he uses that knowledge to change things. While I understand why Kirkman wouldn’t want to spend too much time here, I felt this arc could have benefited more with 5 issues instead of 3. I feel like a little more time to breath in this new environment would have had a bigger impact for the audience, questioning if Mark will ever get back to his regular time, as well as Mark who is struggling to go through these experiences all over again in different ways while also missing his family and friends.

When Mark finally does return to his regular reality we learn that while he was only in the past for a couple weeks, in the present he had been absent for 5 years. It was here that it felt like Kirkman was finally taking enough time for the characters to process everything they were going through. We get to experience Mark’s troubles with accepting that he missed the first 5 years of his daughter’s life as he tries to reestablish himself with his family, as well as his family getting reacquainted with him. Terra has lived the first 5 years of her life without a father, and Eve had moved on after Mark disappeared. While they all want to be together, that comes with its challenges, and Kirkman gives us the time to experience it all with the Grayson family. All of this ends with a suspenseful battle between the Grayson family and the Thragg family, which sees the Graysons thrown back into the fight against the “new” Viltrumite Empire.

This volume was absolutely incredible with the perfect pacing. There was plenty of action and a sufficient enough breathing time with our cast to process everything they were going through. Ryan Ottley’s art is incredible as usual for the first half of this volume, followed by the return of original Invincible artist Cory Walker who has improved immensely since volume 1 and was a pleasant return to the series. I could not put this volume down, and as sad as I am to see this ride come to an end in the next volume, and can’t wait to dive right in!

Y me refiero a Eve.
Me pone triste.

Mark and Eve had settled somewhat uneasily into life on the planet Talescria, and when he and Oliver are helping keep Thragg and his soldier children at bay, Mark is sucked into a deep cave and meets a strange entity. In a deus ex machina plot device, he is thrown back into his past on Earth as a teen but with his current memories. With his hard-won knowledge, he is able to keep his father from killing the Guardians of the Globe and helps the various heroes (good to see Rex Splode again!) prevent mishaps that save millions of lives. However, he knows by remaining in this timeline, he will never have his baby girl Terra so he makes the hard decision to return to his original life, erasing all the good he was able to do in the past. Going between dimensions, the timelines don't sync and he returns five years later finding Terra a child. Just wanting to reunite with his family he declines to help Allen fight Thragg, but Thragg and his children don't care what Mark wants. More battles, more betrayals, and then a devastating death that I felt was unnecessary.

This volume has Ottley do the art in the first half, and Walker in a more cartoony format illustrates the second half. I've noticed that Kirkman and Ottley are always ego-boosting Walker in the sketchbooks that conclude each book, so I wonder what was going on behind the scenes between them all. But I am looking forward to seeing how the three of them conclude this entire series in the next volume!

kirkman and his time skips... whats this, like the third one?? terra literally forgot her father bro.. like why would kirkman do this. i need a solid volume with sunshine and rainbows for mark. also-- the style switch?? don't tell me their gonna stick to this new artist for the remainder of the comics. and fuck ass oliver bro, freddie mercury looking ahh. i swear bro... like boi you literally died for NO REASON... and the way NOBODY CARED (edit: i read the last issue, and damn. oliver was undercover the entire time. #ripking i have always doubted you since the beginning and im sorry. ) thragg and his children got introduced, anissa birthed MARKY AND she bagged a GRANDPA?? she still an absolute hoe tho, i dont care how much she "changed". everyone did a 360 on robot, even tho he's like a total narcissist with a superiority complex. thragg killed fricking mark and eve, she revived them obvi, and GODDAMN MARK KILLING KIDS NOW BRO. bruh and eve crashing out on mark talking bout i hate you; and gets married right after. classic. i'm about to read the LAST volume for invincible. this is going to be interesting to see how kirkman decided to wrap it up. lowkey, this feels like marvel. after endgame, everything went downhill. after robot took over, everything went downhill. and where the heck is donald??

Invincible Ultimate Edition Volume 11!!! With Thragg on the loose with a newly formed army of young Viltrumites, Allen the alien decided to enlist the help of Mark and Oliver to scout the location of Thragg’s last sighting. Mark reluctantly had to leave his family since he knows that he and Oliver are the only ones that could stand up against Thragg on this side of the universe. Unfortunately, Thragg had left by the time they arrived, but during their search Mark found a strange alien that transported him to the past, when he had just gained his powers. While he was living in Invincible issues 1-3, he tried to correct the mistakes he made before, but finds out that he would give it all up to be with his wife and baby daughter (similar to the predicament in the movie About Time) (good movie, look it up). Anyway, he was able to come back, but the problem is, several years have already passed and his baby daughter is now a kid. To add insult to injury, Thragg is on the offensive and aims to destroy the Coalition of Planets, and particularly Mark. Some nice family fun, betrayal, and bloody violence for everyone! I could feel that this series is coming to a wonderful ending soon, if Robert Kirkman is not busy enough to write it. Can’t wait for the next installment!!!

If I ever decide to read Invincible again, I'll be skipping from the Ultimate Volume Six to Ultimate Volume 11. The first section, "Reboot", is a cool jumping-back-in-point, even though it's not actually a reboot. The basic premise is that Invincible is given a shot to relive his life and fix every mistake he's ever made, putting us all the way back in the story of Volume One. It's a fun trope, and it allows a timejump in the story. And this story desperately needed a timejump.

After fifty issues ranging from bad to unreadably terrible, it's a relief to be back into a story where there isn't constant melodrama. There are a few eyerolly moments but they are much more spare than in volumes 7-1o.

"Full House" offers the big buildup to what will be the final volume of the series. And while there are still some moments that feel like they come with swooping piano-themed musical cues, they didn't detract from the story.

I recommend picking this up after Volume Six and just letting the frequent recapversations fill you in on the ridiculous things that made up the previous four volumes. I also recommend it to people who like CW superhero shows.

You know, there are actually a couple issues in this volume that are genuinely examples of truly excellent comics. Individually, I probably would've given them 5 stars. However, this is the penultimate volume of Invincible, so I know by this point not to get my hopes up.

There were several times reading this that I genuinely found myself rolling my eyes. How many times do we have to do the "Mark disappears for an extended period of time and everyone has to learn how to get over it" plotline before Kirkman remembers the half a dozen other times he's done it and thinks of something new? I think I've actually complained about this in previous volumes, that's how frequent it is.
That being said, this was probably the best instance of that plotline so far, since the time-jump genuinely served a lot of the characters pretty well, especially Terra, Oliver, and all the characters back in the Solar System.

Also, art style change! The colours especially see a pretty significant shift, and honestly I really like it!

Invincible (2003-2018), by Robert Kirkman, Cory Walker, and Ryan Ottley (Image)

Championed as “the little book that could”, this series has been surprisingly consistent throughout its lengthy run. Nominated for multiple Eisners (including “Best New Series” and “Best Continuing Series”), what started as a guilty pleasure quickly turned into an enduring staple in my collection. Whether you have binged this series or been along for the whole fifteen year ride, it’s been fun, real fun. It’s a credit to the genre. I appreciate that even Walker recognizes Ottley’s superior art. The pacing of this book is a little fast. I would have welcomed them to allow some of the arcs to “breath” a little more (the characters are that endearing). Invincible always deserves a 5 out of 5.

Another great book in this amazing serie. I can't believe this but I think I'm starting to prefer invincible over the walking dead. 2 great series by kirkman that are as good over time. This book is awesome ,what Mark is going through is pretty $@$&Ed up!!!! the twists and turn .

The reason I'm enjoying it more Than TWD is probably because of the many possibilities the story can go to because of the fantastic ,super hero, sci Fi.Less predictable since there is less restrictions or infinite possible the story can go into, I know the series is going to end soon and it's going to be epic and I'm still enjoying the ride.

Another excellent collection. I didn't like the alternate reality flashback at first because our seemed like a bit too much like a clip show. But the real-world consequences of the time Mark missed got me back on board. I think Mark's struggle to be a present parent is done really well. I also like the seeds being planted for future storylines. My only complaint is I didn't like the drawing style change that happened after Mark returned from his absence. And why couldn't Eve just have grown herself a new leg instead of needing the prosthetic? But these are minor points. I just purchased volume 12 and can't wait to dive in.

Mark is trying to get out of the fight and be a family man now that he is a father.

The threat would not stop just because he wants it. Threat from old enemy comes back. Of course, when Nolan let go of the old general, he know that it might not end well. But being a leader has to show mercy.

Mark is going to leave Earth if that would change things for him. Oliver is working with Allen. Nolan is kind of retried into space with his long time wife Debbie.

If the Vitrumite Thragg who has his own plan of revenge against Nolan and his family.

Raising an army of his off spring. That's horrible and effective.

As a long time Invincible reader this volume hit all the highs the series is known for however some of the narrative is starting to show some fatigue. While I love most of the characters I found the lack of story progression a little disappointing. Beyond that bit of criticism this volume has everything fans have come to love about the series. Having both Cory Walker and Ryan Ottley on art for different story arcs is a real treat for longtime readers. Overall a great collection as the series moves towards the final volume.

The story is still amazing (The reboot arc, encounter against Thragg, etc.).

1 star is taken for the below-standards-and-expectation artwork and illustration by Walker and Fairbairn. It is so lousy and different from the style that attracted me to Invincible in the first place. Couldn't wait to end with their parts and get back to the normal style that I almost spoiled events from myself when checking the future issues. Should the story be on a lower level, I would have given much lower rating for the art.

Rex stays terrifyingly brilliant: a „shadow emperor” who orchestrates everyone without ever stepping into the light. Pure masterclass.
Mark, Eve and Terra settling on that alien world felt so lived-in: the dust, the weird sunsets, the family dinners among insect skyscrapers. I could live there.
Then the time-travel detour hit… and honestly? It felt like a wrong turn in a dream. Clunky, detached, dragging its feet. I kept flipping pages just begging Mark to punch back to his own timeline.
Still, Rex and the new planet carry the weight. One misstep doesn’t kill the run.

Great continuation of this amazing series. The long form narrative Krikman has constructed is a joy to revisit. The time travel arc of this collection presented an interesting twist on that plot device while moving the plot forward. While a conclusion to this long running series is currently taking place I look forward to seeing how the story wraps up and where Mark and his family find themselves. I expect a lot of blood, violence and gory casualties!

The hunt for Thragg and Mark gets a helluva shock

Containing Volumes 22 & 23, this collection gives us more unexpected events and this makes for a compulsive read and the title “Reboot?” says a lot. A good single plot dominates the first volume and it is well-told and well-illustrated. It's worthwhile reading this and I recommend it to all Invincible fans – and there's more to come, I'm sure.

Another smash hit from Kirkman, Ottley, and co.! Cory Walker makes a return to Invincible for an arc, too!

(Cory was the original artist on the book.)

Time travel! George Bailey! Interstellar travels! Invasion! World peace! Infidelity! Forgiveness! Family! Galactic despots! Murder, madness, mayhem!!

Yeah, another fun read!!

I was really inclined to believe that Mark, the Invincible, was a mixture of Superboy and Peter Parker.

Now... I'm inclined to believe that he is Superboy plus Pster Parker...plus Grant Morrison's Animal Man.

I don't think I would want Kirkman as the god creator of my world.

He would be a bigger asshoel than Zeus. Much bigger.

5/5... 10/10...easily.
