Author Paul Haney spent the entire 1997 race season traveling with the PacWest IndyCar team, gathering notes, photographs, and interviews with the personalities engaged in the business, athletic, technical, and organizational activities of the team. The result is an engaging behind-the-scenes look at the ups and downs of daily life in this emotionally charged motorsport.
Special sections detail, report, and explain the constant changes and developments in personnel and components, driver-engineer relationships, team morale, and the stress incurred by the players and their families.
Interviews give the reader an intimate look at the Indy season through the eyes of everyone from the team owner, engineers, drivers, and wives, to the crew chief, mechanics, the team manager, the team's truck driver. A must for any enthusiast who wants to journey beyond their television screen.
When I started reading this book I had no plans to give it four stars but as the season transpired the access and insights presented made me pause and rethink my rating. Perhaps it is because I was a CART Technical Committee member assigned to the Indy Lights Series in 1997 which helped me to fill in the blanks in the story. If you are an IndyCar fan and are willing to overlook some writing and editing errors you will enjoy this book.
