An interesting and very surprising read. I’ve read and enjoyed may of Max’s novels and thought I’d try something outside my usual historical fiction genre. Cryptozoology is not something that has ever been of much interest to me and I was unsure if I’d enjoy this as much as I have his other novel. What I found was a very interesting and well written novel that kept me guessing until the last page, then wanting to move quickly onto the 2nd book in the series. I was really surprised how much I enjoyed a novel that includes neanderthals and mythical creatures, wrapped up in science and the mysterious unknown. An entertaining and enjoyable reads that feeds the imagination and leave the reader wanting more.

Out in the savanna with some mysteries.... lots of whawha which is fine but I thought the sinister disappearances of the people was the more interesting story than whatever spiritualism it was supposed to surround.
