Welcome to Prison 13, a secret prison for women located in a remote frozen wasteland. Years after killing her corrupt father, assassin Jessica Sloan is abducted and sent to this horrifying repository for “troublesome” women. In Prison 13, life is cheap and no one can be trusted. The medical staff are gleeful torturers and the people who run the place are Nazis. No one ever gets out alive. No one has ever escaped. But Prison 13 has never had an inmate like Jessica Sloan. One way or another, she means to get out of this hellhole. Even if it kills her.

3.0 - 3.5*

I'm not entirely sure how to rate, this one. I liked it, eventually, but not as much as the first two books in the series. I had to knock off two half stars; because 1.) There was two much sexual content in the first half, so it got a bit repetitive, after a while, and 2.) It had no pictures in it, so I had to use my imagination. It did redeem itself, with the return of two characters from the previous book.

Jessica Sloan is back! And taking no prisoners. It starts off with sloan' in a cheap motel room, with a client, Jake Wheeler, who is unaware that she's been hired to kill him by a meth-heads mother - for beating up her daughter. After washing his dick five times, to her personal specification (she makes it clear, that it's not going anywhere, unless he does as she says, which annoys him - a bit), it's time to make her move.

This is where it gets interesting: when she's about to clean up her handiwork, and a group of black-clad men, wearing body armour and tactical gear, burst through the door and surround her. She's naked, outnumbered, and has zero-percent chance of taking them all out. She's good, but not that good. She makes a play for one of them, and is rewarded by getting (tasered?) and drugged.

She ends up in a place, known as Prison 13 (unlucky, for some) - and it soon becomes apparent, that this is no ordinary prison. It's the kind of prison, that doesn't officially exist - which is situated in a frozen wasteland. Canada? Just kidding. No idea where it is. The Warden, Evelyn Wickman, and prison staff are all wearing Nazi-uniforms - and there's Nazi symbols, everywhere.

There's nothing much Jessica can do, for the time being; except, regain her vitality, watch and learn, and wait for the right moment to get out of this hellhole. And not end up in the prisons' infirmary, of course. A lot of sadistic things go on in there. It's Ms. Woronov (Doctor) and Livia Collins (Nurse), domain. Still trying to cancel out the images that were conjured up - after reading those scenes. The infirmary is a torture dungeon.

The Frauenschaft' gang rule the place. They wear red booty shorts and tight swastika t-shirts. Lina' is the leader.

Interestingly, there's two on-site places the prison staff can visit for entertainment: Berlin 666 and The Bloody Goat Tavern.

All the staff are sadistic, in one way or another. And a lot of powerful people have connections to the prison. Anyone, can end up in Prison 13. A lot of the women aren't bad, they just ended up, with the wrong partner, who's got the connections to get them out of the way. Maybe they got caught cheating, or the husband wants to be with another woman. Saves on an expensive divorce, I guess.

In summation: Not bad. It's not as good as the first two novels, which were mainly set in a town called Hopkins Bend. I'm missing some of the characters from the first two books, but. ...happy that two made a return in this one. I would have liked to have known more about the 'Shadow Council' and the 'Order of the Dragon.' At the end of the book, the author says, there may be a Depraved 4: At The Earths Core. I hope so, because it ends on a cliffhanger.

Too many sequels are just rehashes of the original story. Bryan Smith doesn't do that with his books, and Depraved 3 is a huge left turn from the previous installments. The through line of the series is the character of Jessica Sloan, and in Depraved 3 she is taken to a secret underground prison with a Nazi motif and surrounded by human filth, both her fellow inmates and the staff. The grue and gore are pushed to the limit in this one, as well as the "romantic" encounters (come on, this is a "women in prison" story after all!). There is resolution to a storyline from the original Depraved and a surprise return from the House of Blood books. Bryan Smith fans will love this one, but new readers should be able to jump right in as well and join in the illicit fun. 5 stars!

This had very little in common with the original novel, particularly with the absence of the notorious small town of What the Fuck is Wrong with These People. I loved that town. I'd build a summer home there if it were an actual place, complete with ADT Security, electric fence, landmines, etc, all for the sake of occasionally smoking hash with Mama Weeks and listening to whatever crazy stories she had to share about the locals. My idea of a good time but I digress.

This was a cool story despite its totally different everything. I'll take hillbilly cannibals over a Neo-Nazi prison any day but that's just me. If you enjoy extreme horror, or there's something seriously wrong with you that law enforcement should perhaps be made aware of, (or both!,) then you'll probably have a splatterpunky good time with this read. I'd go somewhere north of three stars. Maybe a 3.5. I'm sure I'll read Depraved 4 when/if it comes to fruition simply because I'm a Bryan Smith junkie.

That's all. I'm gonna grab some beer and watch the super bowl. Have a nice day. Bye.

Oh.... thank you, thank you, thank you

Now that, my friends, is what I call a kickass sequel. Mr. Smith took the Depraved series into a totally new direction and I loved it. It was a turn-the-page-as-fast-as-possible-to-find-out-what-will-happen-next kind of book. So much fun! The only part I had a problem with was the ending. It just felt like too quick of an implausible ending. I mean, c'mon now, the nurse, Livia, makes it to the escape and gets a bullet to the head. This monster of a woman deserves more of a torture of a lifetime. Jessica, on the other hand, ends up in a hole. Oh well... I can still hope for a unique sequel!!!

DEPRAVED 3, by Bryan Smith. (#41/55 Bitter Ale Series)

Although I loved Jessica's character in the first DEPRAVED, this book--while keeping in with her character for the most part--takes place primarily in a....."special".....kind of prision. A fast read with gore and extreme horror on virtually every page. Unfortunately, nothing comes close to the shock that the first DEPRAVED book gave me.

Still, recommended for fans of extreme horror.

While I did enjoy this book it was my least favourite of the depraved series. I kinda missed the cannibals of Hopkins bend, this book has a whole new setting. I was drawn to the 1st 2 books because of the hills have eyes feel, whereas with this book that feeling has been removed and replaced with a setting in my opinion that doesn’t fit with the series.

Bryan Smith serves up another tale of nonstop carnage and depravity. Taking Jessica Sloan (the love of my life) out of the woods and throwing her into a Nazi run women's prison filled with all sorts of psychos and scum bags makes for one fucking insane adventure. If you are a fan of Smith, this one will not disappoint. I'm really, really hoping he takes it where he's hinting for part 4.

Excellent sequel

Huge fan of Bryan Smith. This story is an amazing sequel to the first two Depraved books and takes Jessica to an all-women Nazi prison. Just an amazing book and a fun read. I really hope there will be a Depraved 4 some day.

So far this has been the weakest in the series but it was still a decent read, i put this one down a for a few months after burning through the first 2 books in a week, i think the genre is something ill need to take breaks from as its heavy with brutality and depravity if the title didn't tell you that. It's really mean spirited and sometimes i just need to lighten the mood a bit. I think what hurt this book for me was the setting, id somehow fell in love with the backwoods setting of Hopkin's Bend and it's mutant inhabitants and we swap it for a womens prison in the arctic run by sadistic Nazis, as if there were any other kind. Not that its a bad setting at all Smith explains in his afterword that he planned to do a Woman in Prison novel anyway but he was done with the backwoods setting so he mixed this characters from Depraved with his women in prison idea, I just think for me it was a jarring change. It has not hurt the series for me and i plan to see it through to the end and continue enjoy it but like your favorite album there are some songs you like more than others.

If you've read this author, then you know. If not, and you enjoy harder edgier horror, then do check him out. I'll buy everything he writes. This book is the third act in his popular Depraved series. The protagonist Jessica Sloan finds herself locked away in a secret max security prison but where's she imprisoned is not what it seems. And she may not survive the experience! Gritty, no holds barred horror of the psychological thriller variety more than the supernatural. But ultimately it's just gripping, gut wrenching nasty fun!

Another insanely violent romp with Jessica Sloan. I was glad to see Smith move away from the backwoods setting of the first two, though the top secrete Nazi torture-rape prison was an interesting choice. It has some of the same problems the earlier books had, but it's fun enough that you overlook that stuff. However, the ending was a bit of a letdown, a situation not helped by the wishy-washy tease that we'll probably get a followup, maybe, but it'll be a while.

2 AND 1/2 STARS

Reading this next book in author Bryan Smith's hardcore horror series, I immediately felt out of place, like perhaps he took the characters from his previous books and shoehorned them into another setting in an attempt to merge them together into a story. After finishing the book with its disappointing ending, I discover in the author's afterword that he did exactly as I had assumed.

Smith readily admits wanting to recreate the WIP (Women In Prison) exploitation films of the 60's and 70's and translate that into a novel. And while I enjoyed the book for what it was, he virtually added nothing new to the subgenre, something I had thought for sure he would have done with ease, especially knowing his prior work. Unfortunately, we get scene after scene of mildly violent clichés with predictable outcomes in a very unrealistic setting.

This was a big disappointment for me, especially since Depraved 2 was one of my favorite books of the year, even better than the original. Author Smith mentions at the end of this book that he is planning a part 4 somewhere down the line. I just hope he returns to what made the series great in the first place.

Assuming you’ve already read Depraved and Depraved 2, you won’t be surprised by this one. If you haven’t and think that reading a book called Depraved 3 might be fun, go back and read the first two. I’ll wait.
Now, as we all know, Bryan Smith’s books are non-stop rollercoaster ride into the very bowels of extreme horror. They're violent, sexy and he doesn’t beat around the bush. Actually, in this one he does. Lots of bushes … and violently!
Unlike the previous two entries of grotesque redneckery, this book spins the sick bucket towards the Women in Prison genre and all it's tropes. Like Bryan's previous love letters to the slasher movie, this book is just as spot-on and nostagic for the trashy and exploitative W.I.P. films of old.
So shine up your leather boots and put on your My Name Is Ilsa name badge and prepare to be sickened/entertained.

Bryan Smith is my favorite writer. There I said it. His books keep me totally engrossed. The 3rd installment of Depraved was a shock to me. It was not where I thought the series would go, but I totally loved it. I absolutely devoured this book. When I wasn't reading it, I was thinking about it. Do yourself a favor, and read this series!!!!!

Depraved and Depraved 2 are two of the most "fun" extreme horror books that I'm aware of. They both mash together action, horror, comedy and bizarro with glee, looking to shock in a way that is unflinching while never feeling meanspirited. Sure, the characters are pure pulp - busty women whose libido is only matched by their killing prowess along with hulking inbred rednecks, demonic monsters and government super-powered hitmen with tools and skills that would make James Bond sigh and say "a bit much, no?".

So if you've gone so far as to finish the second Depraved book, is there any reason to continue to the third one? Well, let me ask a question... does the name Woronov mean anything to you? How about Thorne? Romay? If you immediately think of Mary Woronov, Dyanne Thorne and Lina Romay - then congratulations, you'll absolutely love seeing characters and going - hey I bet that character's based on (insert "Women in Prison" film star here). Not sure who these wonderful thespians are? No worries, you don't need to get the gentle winks to WiP films to appreciate the plot, but expect the same amount of madness and action of the first two books moved into a Women's prison.

Prison 13 is basically a mix of a Bond villian's lair, Area 51, and a Nazi prison camp tied together. Escape is impossible. The staff are trained to torture the inmates in gruesome ways. Gangs have formed amongst the prisoners and no one is really held responsible for rape, mutilation, or murder of fellow inmates. Many of those in leadership positions wear Nazi uniforms and carry weapons used by the SS. There is no judge. There is no jury. There may be executioners, but it damn well won't be quick or painless.

Our not-so-heroic-at-times heroine, Jessica Sloane finds herself unceremoniously added to the numbers of those trapped in this fortress after her actions in the second book. The leadership wants to torture her to display dominance right at the start. The Nazi gang of inmates wants her to join or be killed. The ladies running the black market pipeline want the same. And...it seems like the winds of change is keeping everyone - prisoner or employee - on edge. It seems that there may be plans to renovate the center and not everyone will be welcome back.

A love letter to the exploitation Women in Prison films of the 70's and 80's, the chances that you'll enjoy this are very similar to your reaction to these films. If, in your opinion, "Ilsa, She-Wolf of the SS" is an awful film, exploiting naked actresses who are making light of the true horror that was the Holocaust - this is not your book. Not saying your opinion is wrong - just that a specific sense of humor is needed to look past some topics and get to the reality that we are (eventually) mocking these idiots who will (again, eventually) get their comeuppance.

I think that fans of Bryan Smith probably have a dark sense of humor, which will help them appreciate this as the offensive-but-winking-at-the-reader-at-the-same-time tale it's meant to be. It's got the same "anything goes" type of plot as the first two, just held to a tighter location. You know, by the time you get to the third book of a series, you probably know whether you should read it or not. It's easily recommended to fans of the first two. Also recommended to "Women in Prison" fans. You'd miss a few random callbacks, but the plot is pretty much self-contained. But if you do read this first, you're going to want to read the prior two anyway, so start at the beginning you lazy bastard.

“When fucking a neck stump, you always want to go for esophageal insertion. Makes for a smoother experience.” She giggled. “Or so I’ve been told.”

Jessica Sloan finds herself once again roaming the darkness that is true human evil, as she stands in Prison 13, an establishment the world was never meant to see. Dictated heavily by the Holocaust and Hitler, the Warden and guards all wore oddly seductive outfits completed with Nazi embellishments. Bringing in Helga Van Tramppe from the previous novels, she served as second in command to the Warden, Ms. Wickman. Both woman took a deprived sense of excitement and arousal in cruelty and torture, as inmates were snatched from their cells and sentenced to abuse and sexual abuse. The prisoners came from all walks of life, and all nationalities. Some were truly guilty of horrific crimes, while others were seemingly innocent; except they crossed the wrong wealthy and influential men. Alice Kincaid was one such prisoner, as she found a way to the top position by murdering her two precessers, Lansing herself a cushy lifestyle in the heart of black market smuggling. Learning really quickly the dynamics, Jessica was a hot ticket item to the many divided groups, including Alice and the quick power rise group of Frauenschaft, a select few Aryan Goddesses as they put it. These woman believed they were the top, because they shared the characteristics Hitler was so impressed by. As they began turning the power struggles in their favor, Ms. Wickman becomes aware of her being pushed aside, leading to betraying Helga and taking up Jessica Sloan as an escape partner. Along with a nurse and Jessica’s one friend in Prison, Spider, they managed to a helicopter where Jessica finds and murders the living relic of Hitler, before their helicopter was shot clear from the sky into the icy environment far below. As readers wait in anticipation, the story ended without coming clean I’d this was the death of one of the most deadly woman in the world.

You will corporate. You will behave.

The first two novels in the Depraved series were set in and around Hopkins Bend, a backwoods area populated by redneck cannibals who rewarded their visitors with torture and death. The tenuous link with the earlier books comes in the way of Jessica Sloan, a stunningly attractive kick-ass killing machine, who featured previously. The plot, in the loosest possible sense of the word, revolves around the incarceration of Jessica at a bizarre institution called Prison 13.

Depraved 3 is essentially a Women in Prison (WIP) story, which Bryan Smith happily admits in his author's notes. WIP movies were notorious in the 1970s (or was it the 1980s?) for their violence and scenes of a sexual nature involving inmates/guards. Many teenage boys enjoyed these guilty pleasures that were frowned upon by anyone with any taste/decency/feelings of repressed guilt.

If you enjoyed WIP movies and want to see the boat pushed out a bit a lot further by Mr Smith, then you've come to the right place. Depraved 3 is a collection of scenes of horrific torture and degradation mixed in with large helpings of gratuitous sex, involving gorgeous women with large breasts and Nazis (mostly with large breasts). There's even a Stuka for f$#k's sake (although it should be pointed out that any pedants will complain that it is wrongly called a fighter plane).

If everything I've written so far makes Depraved 3 sound like a terrible book then it's probably not for you. If you are familiar with Bryan Smith's writing then you will probably know what to expect anyway. If you haven't read Depraved and Depraved 2 first then you should - not because it will make any difference, but because they are a hoot. If you like this sort of thing, and it has to be said that Smith does it well, then for the open minded reader there's no doubt it's entertaining, in a sick, barmy kind of way. You'll have to excuse me now as I need to take a shower.

Jessica Sloan returns! Only this time, she's not facing the grotesque and sadistic rednecks of Hopkins Bend. Instead, Jessica faces her toughest challenge yet...an all-women, Nazi run prison in the cold barren wastelands of the unknown.

Smith takes Depraved 3 into the realm of the Women in Prison genre as a callback to the exploitative films from decades ago. Of course, in keeping with Bryan Smith and the rest of the Depraved series, this isn't going to be the typical experience in the criminal justice system. There are no rules in this prison where the staff is encouraged to rape, torture, and murder the inmates. Among the inmates, only the strong thrive through acts of incredible violence, domination, and through shear numbers. To survive, Jessica must navigate the grim complexities of this new and dangerous world where even a glance at the wrong person could result in a savage beating and then a prolonged torture session at the hands of the medical staff.

Depraved 3 delivered on its promise of delivering an extreme horror experience mixed with the Women in Prison genre. However, Jessica feels like an afterthought to the narrative sometimes. She lacks agency to the major story arc happening around her, although the secondary characters fill in those blanks for the reader. Had the story centered more around Jessica, I think the narrative would have been a bit stronger.

Even still, I managed to polish the book off in two days and was left wanting more.

Overall, Depraved 3 is exactly as the title suggests. It's an EXTREME HORROR novel which includes detailed descriptions of torture, sodomy, sadism, sexual assault, and even one scene of consensual sex. This is a Bryan Smith novel. His name alone is a trigger warning.

Brutal!

Wow! This was just brutal! Although the backwoods redneck stories are one of my favourites, this far outweighed the first two books in this series, in my opinion. Possibly because apart from the ending (which I won't spoil) it didn't have the weird, supernatural element to it. I'm not a particular fan of supernatural type stuff as I find the horror of what one human is capable if doing to another far more horrific than ghosties and demons etc...I loved that Jessica was back for this installment along with Helga and Megan but in a completely different setting and it was certainly interesting to read a book of this type that was primarily women with very few men in at all.
I'm not sure about the ending but as there is a 4th book now I will reserve judgement for the time being. I would have said I really didn't like the end had it been the end of the series.

One star lost again for the sloppy proof reading. Sorry, but really is a major bugbear to me.

The setting has changed and the bad guys are different, but the depravity and over-the-top pulpy action is still there and better than ever in Depraved 3.

In this book we take a detour from the usual "backwoods cannibal hillbilly" setting that we're used to in this series and we're put in what feels like a season of "Orange Is The New Black", but in a Nazi prison camp run by sociopaths who get off inflicting pain and misery on others.

Book ends on a massive cliffhanger and I can't wait to see what Bryan Smith does next with this series.

This book has Jessica the main character from the first 2 sent to Prison 13 a woman's prison. If you have seen Orange is the new Black, they are similar in regards to the sex. But then you add torture by guards staff yes this includes the warden and even the prisoner. Murder is definitely ok in this prison so is torture. I haven't seen any WIP movies I have seen Orange is the new Black. But I definitely want to see this as a movie.

Meh, well written but not my thing

I can see what he was going for but I was glad when (the rather sudden) ending happened. Nothing new here, standard stereotypical character set, been there read worse/more ‘brutal’ brutality. The nightclub scene was pretty damn good with some striking visuals.

Good read

The look on her face was sincerity itself, but something about the expression felt a little too studied. A little too…precise. The look on her face was a mask. She was hiding something, but this in itself wasn’t sinister. It might only be that she already had a strong inkling regarding what her boss was about to say.

The series is just compelling enough to keep me reading each book, but the charicters seem to get worse with each installment. Either they have very unsatisfying archs or its just rapists killing rapists, and it's hard to care about eather side. This one in particular felt like there was way too many people introduced to just have no interesting resolutions to their story.
