It's an Undead Thing

Rate this book
Zooey Beckett isn't like other girls. For starters, she's a zombie.

"I loved It's an Undead Thing so much that I highly recommend it to all zombie fans! One-click your copy of It's an Undead Thing for a new twist on zombies!" - 5 Star Review

After the zombie plague broke out, the government did their best to keep the monsters under control until a cure was created. After months of roaming the Boston Common, Zooey awakes to find herself in a strange place with men in lab coats. She is no longer a zombie, but what they now call "The Undead", someone who had been brought back to life after being a zombie. During her three weeks in the Undead rehabilitation ward she learns what life outside has in store for her (and it's not pretty). Meeting the others and hearing their stories, she begins to question the lessons they're being taught by the staff that seem to recoil at the sight of them. One by one, the Undead disappear behind a pair of black double doors if they dare to question the treatment they're being provided. Can Zooey survive the three weeks to make it back home?

"This is he first in this series and my first story by this author, who has found a really interesting angle on the genre. The writing is excellent with good characters that you care about, there is a feel of a conspiracy, lots of mental struggles to keep you engrossed. I look forward to following Zooey's story in he outside world." - 5 Star Review

I have been writing as long as I can remember. I always knew I wanted to write books that someday many people could enjoy. I have a BA in English, a Masters in Business Administration and Marketing, and a Master's in Education.

I enjoy reading as much as I do writing and learned a lot while I was in school about the different forms of literature and the different genres all throughout the world. I only hope that people enjoy my books as much as I've enjoyed reading theirs.

When I'm not reading or writing I enjoy spending time with my family, going for walks or hiking, being outdoors, horseback riding, and watching movies.

The premise of this book intrigued me so I went to the author's website and bought a signed copy. It was a quick little read and great fun. The characters were well developed and the premise did not disappoint. If you are looking for a different take on the zombie apocalypse, I highly recommend this book.

This book is the first in my Zooey Zombie novella series and it was so much fun to write! It follows Zooey Beckett as she's captured wandering the Boston Common as a zombie, issued the new cure, and hospitalized while she goes through rehabilitation as a human being again. Life is finally returning to normal for so many in America, but Zooey can't help wondering if there's not something horribly wrong with this cure, like why does she still get the irresistible urge to eat brains still? She looks like a human, she talks like a human, she goes to college like a human, but her cravings are definitely not human. This is a campy, humorous, quick read that's filled with laughs as well as zombie gore.

This book is $0.99 right now so get it while it's still on a good deal! It's an Amazon Exclusive read and enrolled in the Kindle Unlimited program.

Sure zombies might seem a little overplayed, even back in 2016 when this came out but the book manages to do something with them and isn’t that what zombies are for. Would Romero be remembered if his zombie movies were just horror flicks of shambling hoards without deep meaning and philosophy for stoned film students to over analyse to make themselves feel smart? This book takes place on the tail end of the zombie apocalypse with a cure for the whole thing in hand and brave men and women going out to administer it to the rotting masses.

I’ll open with a complaint just because it’s at the start of the book and that is we open on a nervous young boy going on his first zombie hunt. I don’t know this guys name because I didn’t both to remember it as it seems that he is only here for chapter number one. He might be back down the series. Perhaps a supporting character, or maybe having his own back up adventures in each book. The thing is the book isn’t afraid to show us the point of view of the zombies so why not start there? I’ve seen enough books and movies start with a ragtag bunch of dudes crawling through urban decay dealing with the undead but I can’t, off the top of my head, recall opening a story with a zombie on the hunt for its next meal.

Now our hero is cured of this affliction by the start of chapter two so don’t worry about them stretching that concept too far or too long. But it’s not a simple one and done procedure and first Zooey must survive the ward. This is, without spoiling much, the bulk of the novel and while this well handled it causes a few concerns. I’ll stick to the negative for now and say that there a number of people in this ward. All now cured. Some had been zombies for a few weeks and others a few months. The issue is there is a lot of talk of how people outside the ward view the “undead” as they are known. But considering everyone is locked up in here there doesn’t seem to be much in the way of how they know how looked down upon the undead are. I was left wondering if this is a bit of a plot hole or supposed to suggest something more about the people telling it. That’s not to say that they couldn’t talk about the world outside. As I said some hadn’t been zombies for very long and thus may be aware of these facilities. Plus there is the staff to work with too.

Speaking of the staff and we’re onto the good. At least in terms of the novel not morally. They are the antagonists for the book and what I liked is that for most of the book there is a sense that while they don’t like their job or the undead, at times, they aren’t full blown evil. By the end this might be up for debate but I came out of it seeing them as handled quite well and hope they don’t go full super villain, minions, in the sequel.

Speaking of sequel this is openly the first in a series and it’s a good start. The use of zombies to represent is done quite well and could give the author loads of places to go down the line. The main character is fun and the rest of the cast, going forward are fairly well fleshed out; which is pretty good considering they obviously weren’t in much of the book which was set in the centre. The only one I would pick up would be her new flat mate who comes with her from the clinic. Due to the short nature of the book I would say that only Zooey and her crazy friend get enough screen time to make an impression.

It’s an interesting start which doesn’t give much in the way of a clear idea where it will be going next but it’s a nice enough ride that you might not really care.

I am having a hard time deciding where to start my review of It's an Undead Thing by Alex Apostol the first book in the Zooey Zombie series. After giving it some thought I guess the beginning would be a great place.

It's an Undead Thing opens with a few men hunting zombies to take to the lab to be given the zombie virus and one of the men is taken by surprise by a zombie and is bitten.

It's an Undead Thing opens with a bang and never stops. I love the new twists on the zombies. It's an Undead Thing starts after a zombie outbreak instead of before. It starts at the end of the zombie apocalypse instead of the beginning with a cure for the zombie virus.

Zombies are made human again or sort of with this new cure. A cure has been created to bring the zombies back to life again or undead. Meaning they are no longer dead but not quite alive either.

It's an Undead Thing is a new and very interesting, new world to me. I feel like, (It's an Undead Thing), where have you been hiding all these years. The world that was created for It's an Undead Thing is so brilliant and amazing, in my book that is. I love zombies and am so glad I finally found this little gem.

I can’t wait to dive into the next book So Over the Undead to read more of this amazing world of zombies and the undead. I can’t wait to read more of Zooey’s life and find out where she is going next and how she is going to handle her new life as one of the undead.

I loved It's an Undead Thing so much that I highly recommend it to all zombie fans! One-click your copy of It's an Undead Thing for a new twist on zombies!

I really enjoyed the last book I read from Alex Apostol and I saw that she had a new book coming out but it was the 3rd book of the series. So of course I had to go out and buy the first 2 and I am so happy that I did. This is such a cute novella about a Zooey Beckett and her life as a “somewhat cured” zombie. In this book you will get to meet some interesting, but great characters, get to learn about how life is as an Undead. You get to see how the world now views the undead and how the recently cured zombies get treated in life. I loved that we got to see the view of a former zombie and how they’re dealing with everyday life now, instead of the typical how everyone is trying to survive a zombie apocalypse. I really enjoyed getting to see the injustice of how they were being treated by a majority of the population and to see the allies that they also have.

Off to read book 2 now.

A very thought-provoking short story about a girl who was 'rescued' from being a zombie and her experiences in the rehabilitation hospital through the administration of a drug that she will have to take every 2 weeks for the rest of her life to keep from returning to the zombie state. The story also makes it very clear how many people feel about the zombie 'cure' and the people who have gone through it.

This was a very entertaining book. The characters were full of personality. The situation, zombies and undead, definitely different. That is also what drew me to the book. The black doors and Zoe and her friend Ren shared some interesting conversations. Looking forward to the next book to see what happens after the buzzard hospital.

Love, love, loved it!

This book is so good! Had me drooling for brains! This looks like it will be a great start of a wonderful series! I already have book 2 ready to read! Zooey is smart, witty and is like a fire cracker! This book was well written. I love the way this post apocalyptic story is written. It is so different than what I have read. It is a nice fresh read.

This was a great take on a zombie story. The zombie crisis of 2020 has been mostly curbed, but not enough for Zooey to escape a life-ending bite. A cure has been found, or has it? This story takes on her journey and leaves us with zombie issues not usually addressed. What can I say? It's an undead thing.

I really enjoyed this story. A different take on being a zombie. However I wish it was more detailed and longer. Guess it means I should read the next book.

I really enjoyed this quick read. A look at a Zombie Apocalypse from the other side and a supposed cure. Savage discrimination anyone?

A great short story that explores the original premise: What happens after you 'cure' a zombie apocalypse? This novella explores the social and political ideas that could (and very believably would) develop if our modern universe were to bring people back from the dead.

Zooey is a brilliant protagonist; charming, down to earth, amusing and edgy. My only comment would be that to say she is studying a masters of psychology, she doesn't seem to reflect it much ie. Awareness, empathy, analysing social situations etc.

The only reason I have not given this great story a '5' is a feel it is lacking in content, but I understand that this is because it is a work in progress. It ends a little abruptly and doesn't tie up a lot of knots for some characters.

I cannot wait to read more of this series and I think for anyone who enjoys light-hearted but very realistic and serious ideas, this is a brilliant choice.

A different zombie story

A very different zombie story. Zooey is a zombie or she was until see received he cute. Locked up in a hospital, she and her fellow cured are being prepared to return to society. Unless they disappear behind the black doors. This is he first in this series and my first story by this author, who has found a really interesting angle on the genre. The writing is excellent with good characters that you care about, there is a feel of a conspiracy, lots of mental struggles to keep you engrossed. I look forward to following Zooeys story in he outside world.
