I was hoping for more of a resource book rather than just patterns, but I did like the choice of older 'real people' models for many of the sweaters.

BOTTOM LINE: A magnificent book, filled with exactly as promised traditional knitting patterns, superbly illustrated; difficulty level is for experienced-to-very-experienced knitters, or those who desire an extreme challenge. But IMO it would be worth it.

Almost as good as Alice Starmore's traditional knitting pattern books, and that's saying a great deal! This is well-photographed, nicely presented, and very good to look at, plus the patterns are simply gorgeous. Highly recommended, but only if you have a ton of patience and stamina as a knitter. Lovely, lovely classic knitting patterns and styles from the Scottish and Irish Isles, most of the designs are for extraordinarily beautiful colorwork, although there are a couple of somewhat easier Gansey sweaters worked in plain yarn using traditional stitches, and there are some aran designs as well.
