An English country village, quiet meticulous man, a seemingly charming stranger and two beings who are predators in their own right are about to collide.
First of all I want to thank the author for providing me with a copy of his story. This is a re-written version of "Predators", a story I absolutely enjoyed and gave a 5 star rating. What is it about with the new version? We have a very evil man, Abe, living outside a small town. Then we have a missing little boy, 9 years of age. Then there is the counterpart, a travelling magician and psychic named Ronnie. So far good ingredients for a boiling hot horror tale. Well, partly. The author is overdoing his polishing a bit. There are too many frills and byways here that distract a bit from the punchline but don't bring any new thrills. The first version of the story was raw, to the point, no-nonsense circles but one way thrill. Here we have a story that sounds like The Ramones with The London Symphony Orchestra. With so many side motifs and descriptions the author should have written a longer version with the characters explained in more detail. What is the past of the characters? Then it would have worked better. So you have the opinion listening to an extended three minute killer story that lost some of its punch and surprise. Don't get me wrong. Language and style is fine. The author is very talented. But here there is too much sideline polish we don't need. It's like a rock song. One guitar solo is enough, you don't need three or more. Still a good story but I preferred the first version. It really grabbed me and sucked me in. This was too much symphony for my liking. I missed the raw power of the first "Predators". Nevertheless a good story I can recommend!
Another extremely outstanding story by this talented author. George lives alone in a remote home near a small village. On one of his trips to town he meets Alan. A kind of friendship is slowly building up between those elderly men. Alan drives a vintage car that constantly fails him. He tells George he intends to travel the English countryside. There are secrets behind George and Alan. Has George a kind of eating disorder? What about Alan? Why is he constantly on the move? Things get clearer when George invites Alan to dinner. Here the story comes up with a great twist... fine prose, interesting character, underlying tension and a great outbreak of the supernatural. Absolutely liked this story. Highly recommended!
