A Gay Erotic Short Story Set Against the Backdrop of an All-Male Boarding School in 1950s Norfolk, VA.
Coming of age in the 1950’s, Edward Colson is an introverted senior at an all-male boarding school in Norfolk, VA. Edward’s academic brilliance, mild temperance and his suspected attraction for other boys have made him the target of Paul Maxwell and the Broadbent Brothers, a group of bullies, who for the past five years have made it their personal mission to torment and ostracize Edward. As the entire student body and faculty of Norfolk Academy prepares for the school’s annual Halloween carnival, Edward’s tormentors find him alone and more vulnerable than he’s ever been before. But the tables are soon turned when Edward’s big brother, Anthony Colson, a hulking all-American athlete and officer in training at the U.S. Naval Academy, pays an unexpected visit to his old alma mater, catching his little brother’s bullies in the act.
N.D. Clark is a gay novelist who writes mostly steamy historical and some contemporary novels and short stories. He is passionate about telling stories that explore the full range of human experience, including love, loss, and redemption. He enjoys reading and watching sitcoms, movies, and stand-up comedy shows with his husband and partner of over twenty-four years.
The story is set in Norfolk, Virginia, in the 1950s. It follows Edward Colson, a shy young scholar at an all-male boarding school. Edward is entirely the opposite of his stepbrother, Anthony, be it his physical appearance or his overall behavior. Anthony has always been tall, very athletic, popular, and outgoing. All the things that Edward isn’t.
Being an introvert makes it hard for Edward to stand up for himself, especially when it comes to Paul Maxwell. Paul has been bullying Edward for a long time. Then, the time comes for the academy’s annual Halloween festival, and with Anthony’s help, things change, and the bully turns into prey!
This is the first time I’ve read a story by N.D. Clark, and I liked it. Bullying at that stage of life is a common issue for school and college students. The author presented that important subject very well, of course, in a sexualized way since this is an erotica. It was good to see the bully, for once, turn into the victim. Then, there is the relationship between the big brother and how he teaches his little brother to stand up for himself and stop the bullying.
The steamy scenes are very well written, and the author provides a variety of them throughout the story. Of course, the main highlight is the master scene between the two brothers and Paul, but side steamy scenes like the one between Mr. Magister and Mr. Tiller will also have a strong impact on the readers.
The story is narrated in a third-party narration style, and it depends on the main character’s stream of consciousness, in which he remembers a few encounters, not in any particular order of events. This method helps the reader understand Edward as a character and his desires and fears. I would like to express my gratitude to the author for providing me with a review copy of this story, which I found to be very enjoyable to read.
Although the story was shorter then I was expecting, the action moves the narrative through to its climax nicely. The opening works well, setting the scene, and giving a good sence of the atmosphear. Edward, the main character is well written, and you realy get a feeling of his looking in on a world he is not part of. His brother Anthony, is more on one note story. As for the protagonist Paul; his story arc is a bit predictable. I would Still say I enjoyed the sexy ride.
This felt like a scene out of a much longer novel, one that I would definitely read. I'm not sure what to even think about it- I feel kind of dirty, in a *this is so wrong but I can't stop reading* kind of way. If you're looking for a quick, really quick, dirty, really dirty, little slice of naughty, then I'd say grab this- especially if you have KU, I wouldn't have purchased it at the $2.99 price for the length.
3.5* Story was short and sexy. It got to the point quickly but I felt it was missing something. I just wanted maybe a little more? Maybe a follow up novella? It was my first novella from this author but I liked the writing and will definitely be reading more.
N.D. Clark never fails to deliver on his promise for a delightful combination of a great story with downright nasty sex.
I have enjoyed all of Clark’s work, but ‘Of Brothers and Tormentors’ has to be my favorite thus far. The story between an introverted college senior and his antagonist brings a fresh perspective on bullying. Vengeance was served hot, and I mean hot in this one. N.D. Clark confirmed my suspicion about most bullies, just wish I knew this when I was in school. If you haven’t picked up one of his books yet, you should definitely do so, and I highly recommend starting with this one. In the end, it’s a great lesson in forgiveness.
As always, I look forward to reading anything by N.D. Clark.
