Selected by Martha Stewart magazine as one of the best cookbooks of 2017: "Fabulous ... beautifully written and photographed." "Valeria writes with such heart about regional home cooking and the kind of food values that allow for both tradition and change. Veneto is as simple as it is inspirational." -- Alice Waters "Lavish introductions and beautiful color photography.... Necchio’s first cookbook is a leisurely word-stroll through the events, people, smells, and tastes that formed her cuisine character. " --Booklist , Starred Review
Food-writer, cook, and photographer Valeria Necchio shares the food and flavors at the heart of the Veneto region in North Eastern Italy. Veneto includes lovingly written recipes that capture the spirit of this beautiful and often unexplored region, and Valeria’s memories of the people and places that make the Veneto so special.
Packed with fresh ingredients and lively flavors, the recipes range from the dramatic black cuttlefish stew, through soups, pastas, and risottos, a mouthwatering selection of Italian sweet treats, and sweet and savory preserves for your pantry to ensure year-round deliciousness.
Necchio realized none of her relatives was going to write down their traditional recipes from the inland Venetian farmland, so she did it. She knows who she is and she loves the food.
This is thrifty, seasonal cooking based around the ingredients available on hand, and some of those are the very best possible! This cuisine is much, much more adventurous about meats than I am. I will not be cooking rabbit. But I am here for the veggie preparations and the desserts!
Reminding us all that the Venato means more than just Venice, this book combines Venetian classics of sarde in saor and vongole with less well known dishes from the countryside. This is a beautiful book, with lots of gorgeous sounding recipes to try, somethibg I look forward to doing.
Reading Veneto felt like traveling through the heart of Northern Italy without leaving my kitchen. Valeria Necchio doesn’t just share recipes she shares memories, traditions, and a real sense of place. I loved how every dish has a story behind it, from the rustic stews to the elegant risottos. The black cuttlefish stew was a standout for me bold, rich, and full of depth. The photography is stunning, and the writing is so warm that you can almost smell the food. It’s a cookbook I’ll treasure for both its recipes and its storytelling.
The introduction describes this book as a "memoir of food, family and culture" which is an apt description. The recipes include traditional family favorites, some modern recipes, and recipes with ingredients made from your pantry, and Necchio introduces the recipes with stories about family members and cultural references. The recipes are straight-forward and delicious. I plan to cook from it often.
Loved the recipes from here, I made a lot of the sides and even tried the Baccala recipe. I will continue to use this book. But more importantly- I will pick it up anytime I miss my life in Veneto. I loved the stories behind the food and all the memories that came flooding for me , with each page. If you have lived in Veneto, then you will love this one.
