It's a Mall World After All: A Sweet Teen Romcom

Rate this book
The perfect revenge doesn't always involve revenge.

In junior high, Charlotte was bullied by a group of popular guys. In high school, she grew pretty and refused to date any of them.

Justice served.

Aloofness is a strategy that's worked quite well and one she intends to keep.

Until Colton. He's handsome, smart, and best friends with Bryant, the guy who put spiders inside her desk in eighth grade.

Worst still, Charlotte's best friend, Brianna, has started dating Bryant.

That obviously needs to change.

So when Charlotte sees Bryant at the mall flirting with a mysterious, blond-haired rich girl, she knows he's up to no good. Of course, she tells Brianna about it.

And of course, Brianna believes Bryant instead of her.

As they say, no good deed goes unpunished. Now Brianna is taking his side.

Charlotte must prove who's right, once and for all, and that means catching Bryant in the act. Shouldn't be hard. Honestly, he's not that smart.

There's only one thing standing in Charlotte's way: Colton. He's just as determined to keep her away from Bryant.

As the two go head to head, Charlotte just might lose her heart.

Janette Rallison has five children who keep her well supplied with plot ideas, sometimes even making cameo appearances in her novels. She likes to write romantic comedy because there is enough angst in real life, but theres a drastic shortage on both humor and romance.

Playing the Field was named Society of School Librarians International Best Book Award Honor Book, and both Alls Fair In Love, War, and High School and Love, Life, and the Pursuit of Free Throws were included on YALSAs Popular Paperbacks for Young Adults list. Rallison is laugh out loud funny! When I first saw this book I thought, just another silly teen romance novel. And it is a teen romance, but it's smart and absolutely hilarious. It's fluff, but it's the kind of fluff that I can read and recommend without guilt. Rallison's plot just races along as Charlotte, a high school senior with an uncanny ability to get herself in humiliating scrapes, tries to manage an attraction to her best friend's boyfriend's best friend, while simultaneously trying to prove the best friend's boyfriend is cheating. Yes, it sounds sudsy, but the characters are smart, the dialogue is witty, and if you don't laugh, seriously, you need to get your funny bone checked.

It's a Mall World After All was a cute high school kind of romance book. I wish I loved the mall as much as the MC did.. but unfortunately that will probably never ever happen.

Charlotte is a world full of fun. I honestly laughed so much at the situations this girl got into. So she wants to be the apple of her best friend's boyfriends best friend. However, she is also trying to prove that her best friends boyfriend is actually cheating at the same time. Just saying that and probably reading that.. you know that Charlotte is going to get herself into some sticky situations. Or lots of trouble.

Either way, she made this book enjoyable. Besides liking Charlotte, I really liked Colton. He provided as many, if not more, laughs in this book too. He just made the situations even better and honestly more enjoyable. I think this is one of my guilty pleasures for a teen kind of romance.

I read this one years ago and loved it just as much then as I did this time around. Rallison has a great snarky teen voice that really makes the characters come alive and keeps the reader laughing.

Not all smart girls are...smart. Charlotte works in the mall and is determined to prove to her best friend that her boyfriend is a cheating slime ball. Charlotte can't get over how mean boys were in Jr High, which is a shame, but she's strong enough now to dish it right back out and take her flaws and awkwardness in stride.

The characters are great--especially Colton--and the situations are pretty funny. I love a story with a little conflict and growth amidst the fun and this one delivers. Such a fun, holiday story for the youngster in me.

Content: mild romance (talk of cheating); mild language

This book had me laughing out loud at times! It's about Charlotte, a girl who was picked on in Jr. High, moved away for 2 years, and comes back really beautiful, but is totally against dating any guy who goes to her high school. I really enjoyed watching Charlotte develop throughout the book. She really does have others best interests at heart, but goes a little overboard in trying to protect those she cares about and is very prone to accidents. A light, clean, funny, and "fluffy" young adult book that will have you alternating between blushing and laughing.

Oh my goodness. This book had me chuckling almost the entire time!

After reading a review someone posted for this book, I knew I had to read it to! I'm so glad I did - now I need to get an actual copy of it, instead of an ebook! ;)

It was just so much fun! Such an fun read to help you get through a lagging day … or writer's block … or even reader's block! *grins* I recommend it.

Charlotte is the funniest girl ever! She had the most hilarious attitude. I'm sure I was the only person in the book that believed her about Bryant - her best friend's boyfriend. I'm so glad she was right! At least it made some people apologize to her, instead of visa-versa.
She had so many accidents! Argh. But it was so funny! Watch out for Charlotte - the girl who will make an accident out of basically anything. :D

Colton. That name really makes me like him even more! I got annoyed with him several times, because he would suddenly become friends with Charlotte, than something happened and he's mad at her. Thankfully things got better at the end. *coughs* No spoilers from me, sorry.

All the characters were hilarious! They had such funny personalities and just made me happy as I was reading!

Content:
A couple kisses. Mentions of girls being really pretty - . Having girlfriends and boyfriends. A couple scenes where people are dancing. A couple mentions of a girl's figure - no inappropriate details though. Mentions of people swearing, but that's it.

Definitely a fun read! You should probably check it out. ;)

Lots of drama and boyfriends and silliness, but it was a nice change from deep reads. It's strange reading about high school age groups...I often forget I've been out of that age for a few years now XD

edit: I am SO GLAD they updated the Goodreads page to show this adorable cover! It’s so much better than the original cover! I know, they say don’t judge a book by its cover, but we all do it!

This has been my favorite Christmas book I read this year — such an underrated gem!

I am always looking for YA Christmas books and I’m so happy I found this one since it didn’t show up on any book lists.

This book follows a main character who is working in a mall for the Christmas holiday. She sees her best friend’s boyfriend with another girl. She also clashes with the boyfriend’s best friend and the story goes forward from there.

I loved the main character and how she was determined to help the kids have a nice holiday. The kids were very cute too. I also liked her scenes with the love interest and would have liked more!!! I think the best part for me was definitely the main character’s narrative voice. I might have to check out other books by this author because I found the main character to be entertaining and funny.

Overall very cute and funny - exactly what I want out of a Christmas book!

I love this book, I don't know how many times I've read it. I stopped keeping count after four or five...

I don't know what to say that I haven't already said to all of my acquaintances. Charlotte is wonderful and my soul sister and can I please have a Colton? Thank you.

This book is so funny, I seriously still laugh at it after all these re-reads (and can we take a moment to appreciate Charlotte's father?). It's also clean, which is hard to find in YA books these days.

But seriously, I can't believe that you are still here reading my sorry excuse for a review and not scouring the world for a copy to read yourself. Go. Read. It!

A "new" author I love. She's like Meg Cabot without the crap... or the gray areas. She's funny. She's easy to read. She's perfect for teen readers. This book's story is about a girl who decides that she learns some great life lessons while working as a perfume promoter at the mall. She gets herself into some pretty sticky situations while trying to prove that her best friend's boyfriend is two-timing her. Cute, cute story.

This one of the authors that I met at a signing the other day at Barnes and Noble. She's pretty cool. Learn more about her at her blog:

I came for the mall antics, which didn't disappoint, but I stayed for the fun and sweet story. Part of the plot is Charlotte's recognizing some less than desirable things about herself and making an effort to change those behaviors. She carried a lot of middle school baggage, and as a senior, it was time for her unpack some of that. I also thought the romance was cute, but I really loved seeing what a heart of gold Charlotte had. That whole subplot with the Santa event is the sort of fluff I live for.

Overall: This was a charming, witty, and fun temporary escape for me.

If you like witty and hilarious page-turners that keep you interested and laughing all the way through, then IT'S A MALL WORLD AFTER ALL by Janette Rallison is the book for you! This is the kind of book that keeps you wondering what hilarious twist is coming next.

Charlotte is a girl who works in a mall, spraying perfume on unsuspecting costumers. She's a high school student, has red hair, she's taller than normal, and she has a strict policy against dating guys from her school. Charlotte never understood why anyone would buy those perfumes at the mall. She could never figure out how anyone could believe those advertisements that say the perfume will make you irresistible if you wear it, or that the guys will be all over you.

When Charlotte sees her best friend, Brianna's, boyfriend, Bryant, at the mall with another girl, she is faced with the tough choice of whether to tell Brianna or to not say anything and hope it was all just a misunderstanding. When she asks Bryant's best friend (and also her study buddy), Colton, about what she saw at the mall, will Colton stick up for Bryant and deny it or agree with Charlotte? Is Bryant deceiving Colton as well as Brianna? Is Charlotte the only one who knows the truth?

What happens when Charlotte goes to great lengths to prove Bryant's lying to Brianna? Will Charlotte get pinned for everything? And will Charlotte's friendship with Brianna survive through all the lies and rumors? And why does Charlotte have a policy against dating guys at her school, anyway? What happens if she breaks the policy?

There are so many unanswered questions. But don't fret--all you have to do to answer them and have a lot of great laughs along the way is to read this book. I can tell you one thing, it has a great ending.

Second Read Oct 2011: Rallison is the Queen of writing Teen Lit. I really enjoyed this book, even more the second time around. I just love the Charlotte and Colton. I liked Charlotte a lot more this time around, after re-reading my previous review, the things that bothered me before I didn't even notice this time around. Such a fun story with a lot of heart. I love it! Definitely a five star read!

First Read: Aug 2009 So, this is my third Rallison novel and I’m quickly becoming a fan. She writes fun, original stories that keep you entertained throughout the book. I like the jokes she mixes in and I find myself smiling a lot while I’m reading. The romance between her characters is always fun and she writes leading men very well. I loved Colton! He totally frustrated me at times, but he was a great lead. Charlotte on the other hand wasn’t my favorite. I guess since I just read about Giovanna (How to take the Ex out of Ex-Boyfriend) who was so sweet and likable, I was expecting Charlotte to be the same way. Charlotte really did have a chip on her shoulder and really knows how to hold a grudge. She is really passionate about what she believes in and doesn’t always go about things in the best manner. Charlotte did grow on me and by the end I was a fan. This was a fun read, would recommend it to anyone who enjoys teen-lit.

Romance, YA, clean
This is probably the funniest thing I have read this year. Truly a gem of a read, although it you don't like YA, you might not enjoy it. JR has written a clever, fast paced novel that truly is a fun social commentary. Charlotte and Colton both have some introspection to do and experience. Charlotte's loyalty, her giving heart, and her bias for not dating any of the guys who mercilessly teased her in Junior High made for a witty, clever, and light-hearted read that had some foundation to it. Charlotte and Colton were a fun couple to read their 'fall'. Their 'dance' around each other was fun to read, and I laughed out loud at some of the 'incidences'. Glad she found one of the good guys! Her family, friends, the social nuances, were cleverly told, and a roller-coaster ride of a read. Hopefully Brianna will find a HEA in the future!
I rarely give 5's, save mostly for classics, but this was too laugh out loud funny, and of course the romance was a cute fall! I have read other things by J.R., and this is my absolute favorite of anything she has written.

This book is really interesting! It starts out with the protagonist, Charlotte, who works at the mall. In the mall, she analyzes people based on what they buy. She also learns about things in the mall. This book is about one day while she was working, she notice her best friend's boyfriend with someone else. She then tries to find out what's going on. While she was trying to find out what is going on between them, she falls in love with her best friend's boyfriend's best friend. There's a lot of twists and turns. I find it interesting that she was able to analyze people based on what they buy. I also liked how in the story, she meets a little boy whose family is poor. It shows how you can meet all kinds of people at the mall. But I liked how she tried to help make the little boy's wish come true which was being able to buy a pair of shoes for his mother. You'll enjoy this book if you like romance stories!

It's a Mall World After All is a witty, fun filled high school romance that actually had me laughing out loud at times.
Charlotte is a good intentioned but accident prone teenager. While working at the mall she sees her best friends boyfriend cheating on her. When Charlotte tells her best friend, she sides with her boyfriend and Charlotte feels a wedge begin to form between them. Charlotte becomes determined to prove she is right and gets herself into several sticky (literally) situations.
I thought this was a delightfully fun and clean teen read. I really enjoyed Charlotte's sarcastic wit and her inner dialog.

Hilarious as usual. I was sort of doubting this book after reading “Fame, Glory, and Other Things on my To-Do List.” That one wasn’t as funny as Janette Rallison’s books usually were so I became a bit worried. I shouldn’t have been worried!!!! This book was hysterical. I laughed so hard my mom had to make sure I hadn’t actually been dying. Too bad it’s summer right now. This book totally got me in a Christmas-y mood. I don’t know if the rest of my family is going to appreciate me listening to holiday music in the kitchen...

Anyway, this was another fantastic book from Janette Rallison. I don’t know what I’m going to read next by her, but I’m hoping it’s just as good!

It's a Mall World After All Janette Rallison
Walker Books for Young Readers,2006,230pp.,$16.95 ISBN0-545-01290-2

What’s the point of doing anything when someone doesn’t trust you? Well that’s not what Charlotte in It’s a Mall World After all by Janette Rallison thinks, like a genius, smart and confident that something is fishy when she finds out something about her best friend’s boyfriend cheating on Brianna behind her back. Even though Brianna doesn’t trust Charlotte and have arguments with her because of this incident. Charlotte is really determined and all fixed up to find the truth to prove to Brianna that she is not lying and more importantly to see what Bryant have done to cheat on Brianna.
It starts off when Charlotte sees with her sharp eyes, bright and mean when she sees Bryant and Colton with 2 other girls. Charlotte’s best friend, Brianna is going out with Bryant, so how can he do this to her? Even though this book don’t make you all stressed out and it’s not like it’s trying to find out who murdered who or something but this book will make you curious on what is actually going to happen next in the book.
At the beginning of the story, Charlotte thought that Colton, Bryant’s best friend was a guy that will not be a good boyfriend but her opinion starts to change for him. Do you know what happens at the end? Well it is for me to know and you to find out yourself!
Towards the end of It’s a Mall World After All you will think that this is a terrific book and it has a very sweet ending. I recommend this book to anyone that loves happy and sweet endings like this one. You can read this anywhere and anytime, you can read it in the subway when you are going to school and you can read it as a book before you go to sleep.

"It's a Mall World After All", by Janette Rallison, is about a girl named Charlotte who is having some troubles with her flamboyant best friend, Brianna. Charlotte suspects some infidelity between Brianna and Brianna`s boyfriend, Bryant, when she unexpectedly spots Bryant and a blond chick at the mall. Charlotte jeopardizes her best friend's relationship by breaking the news to Brianna. Brianna then accuses Charlotte of being jealous! Will Charlotte continue her junior high school year filled with discomfiture, seclusion, and uneasiness? Or will she take the path guiding her to restore her friendship with her friend Brianna? I think this book illustrates an exceptional life lesson explaining how life is filled with paths and choices, and even though the path may have bumps, it all works out in the end. I would recommend this book to any girl between the ages of 10-14 and readers who enjoy middle school fiction.

Super cute book. This is a quick fun read, I read it in a couple of hours in one night. I've read 3 books by Rallison now and I'm sensing a theme here, she's a hilarious writer. Her main characters are always witty and entertaining. I literally laugh out loud with all of her books. She's such a fun CLEAN writer-love that. Rallison: my new request, write a clean adult book now along with your young adult books!

If I could rate this 10 stars, I would.

It didn't have a complicated plot.

There were no family problems, depressing themes,or anything that should get you emotional, for that matter.

Yet I found myself laughing, blushing, and most importantly, anticipating , something I had been sorely missing before. I was excited and I couldn't stop turning the pages.
An awesome book, in every sense of the word.

I love this book. I’ve read it several times over the last decade, and it never fails to make me smile and laugh. The writing style is easy to get into and follow along with, the pacing is really good, and the characters are also good.
Charlotte just makes me laugh so much. I also adore her and Colton.
I’m honestly not sure what it is about this book I love so much because it’s pretty cheesy, but it just has something about it.

Fun, fun story about a girl at a mall who is just doing her job, but keeps finding herself in little tangles, like accidentally almost encouraging a young boy to steal shoes for his mom and many other situations that make her out to be the bad guy when really she just wants to help. I liked the story a little extra knowing quite a bit about retail and felt for her with her perfume spraying job. The characters were entertaining and realistic. Clean book I'd love my daughters to read.

4.5 rounded up! What a surprise of a read. This is a book I would have never picked up if not for a friend rating it so highly and I totally agree. The story was cute and heartfelt. I loved the characters and Christmas aspects as well. Some of the comments were quite funny and I really enjoyed the relationship between the main characters. I wish there were a little bit more moments between the two of them or an epilogue just to give a little bit more but overall a fantastic Christmas read.
