“An accordion for accommodation, this backpack-tent…is a thought provoking addition to transient urban living. Addressing the need for safety and shelter in city locations…the concertinaed frame creates enough space for reclining as well as providing a sense of refuge from urban threats. (the designer) hopes this simple project will reclaim public space, giving a reassuring place in which to pause or linger.”
I have a feeling that it may be more of a magnet for urban threats. Clearly the author and these designers have fallen under the bizarre impression that homelessness or should I say “transient urban living”? is a lifestyle choice and the city streets at night are filled with other fellow upper-middle class types mingling and comparing their own high-end designed portable accommodation.
In theory many of these creations look fun and quirky, but in terms of real-life practical application would prove to be quite a different scenario. So many are deliciously ripe for parody, ranging from the playful, inventive and outlandishly experimental we get a broad and provocative range of creations within these tightly packed pages. Many would fall under more artistic or political statement than everyday use items, and others suggest fashion over function, but whatever your take there’s certainly plenty to choose from.
Wildly impractical, outrageously pretentious and laughably out of touch with reality pretty much sums up almost all of the objects in the first section which means they should be hugely popular with celebrities, glampers and other bored rich people. These may look great in the high-end galleries and exhibitions of the world, but try taking them to a long weekend festival and see how you get on?...
But of course there are also many inspirational and impressive creations in here which have and or could go onto improve the quality of many people's lives across the world, especially in emergency situations, but its also vital to keep in mind that what looks great in one highly-manipulated photo scene can be a very different prospect in reality.

'Mobitecture. Architecture on the move' bundelt een 250-tal ontwerpen uit de hele wereld van constructies die verplaatst kunnen worden,: te voet, op een aantal wielen, met de slee over sneeuw of langs het water.
De ontwerpende architecten hebben allemaal iets met elkaar gemeen: ze willen een oplossing bieden voor iets dat hen persoonlijk bezig houdt. Zo zijn er een aantal Amerikaanse ontwerpen die ontworpen werden na de Kathrine-storm in Louisiana, en een aantal concepten bedacht na de aardbeving van 2011 in het noorden van Japan. Andere ontwerpers zoeken er naar om daklozen een menswaardig onderdak te geven, dat daarnaast ook nauwelijks iets kost. En sommige architecten willen zich nog niet settelen, en zoeken een sobere of meer luxueuze woning te ontwerpen, die veel goedkoper is dan een klassieke woning, en die men kan uitproberen in verschillende omgevingen. Niet alle ontwerpen zijn uitvoerbaar - ik schat dat een kwart van de ontwerpen eerder artisiteke installaties en concepten zijn, die niet vaak gereproduceerd zullen worden. Daarnaast komen in het boek ook verplaatsbaren winkeltjes, bibliotheken en werkplekken voor. De priproductiekostenjzen variëren uiteraard ook: er worden shelters voorgesteld gemaakt uit polyester of gevouwen uit karton, maar daarnaast ook luxueuze campers en woonboten.
Een aangenaam kijk-boekje, want zoals in veel architectuurboeken geeft de tekst maar weinig meerwaarde. Jammer is dat van veel ontwerpen slechts één foto getoond wordt; je mist dan een binnezicht of een grondplan. De constructies waarin ik zelf wel zou willen wonen zijn beperkt tot een twintigtal, o.a. de woonboten die ontworpen werden n.a.v. de architectuurwedstrijd die Hamburg uitschreef voor experimenteel wonen op het Eilbek-kanaal in de stad (vanaf p. 254 in het boek), de gezellige caravan op p. 157 of de prachtige KODA-unit uit Estland (p. 103). De andere 90 % van de ontwerpen lijken me wat te spartaans voor iemand die een gemiddeld comfort en esthetiek gewoon is.
Ik kreeg het boekje van een goede vriendin en ik vond het dan ook een leuk cadeautje.

Interesting topic and some inspiring designs contained in the book. However, too many things are mentioned in the text but not shown in photos. More photos of inside the houses, or designs collapsed down would have been more useful. Would suggest just flipping through the photos, information in the text is not all that useful.

Tons of examples helps to explore more possibilities of housing and shelters. Love the part of wearable construction part.
