About the author

Amin Zaoui is an Algerian novelist. He was born in Bab el Assa in Tlemcen province and studied at the University of Oran, obtaining a Ph.D. in comparative literature. He moved to France during the Algerian civil war but returned home in 1999. He has served as the Director General of the National Library of Algeria and currently teaches comparative literature at the Central Algerian University.

Zaoui is a bilingual writer and has published novels in both French and Arabic. His work has been translated into a dozen languages. Zaoui's French book Festin de Mensonges has been translated into English by Frank Wynne. In 2012, his Arabic novel The Goatherd was nominated for the Arabic Booker Prize.

He has also translated French novels by Mohamed Dib and Yasmina Khadra into Arabic.

"La soumission" de l'écrivain algérien Amin Zaoui est paru 1998 chez la maison d’édition "Le serpent à plumes" (Paris).
Ce récit commence avec „kane ya ma kane” (arabe: il était une fois) et nous laisse attendre un compte captivant des milles et une nuits, mais hélas, l’auteur dévoile à travers 150 pages l'atrocité et la violence de la soumission des femmes à leur mari, des enfants à leurs parents… Il s’agit de l’histoire du jeune Younes et sa famille, au sein de laquelle les liens ne sont pas toujours aussi sains que l’on croit.. Une image amère d’une famille oranaise, laquelle peut être considérée sans doute comme un échantillon représentatif d'une tranche de la société orientale et (à mon avis) occidentale en ex aequo.
