Lonnie is the daughter of Mulan. She's strong. She's fearless. And she's willing to fight for what she wants .like the very special sword that once belonged to her mother. When Lonnie brings her friends Jay and Jordan on an forbidden trip to Imperial City to get it, she must prove she's a true warrior.
Wow, This book was so good & I loved the story about Lonnie ( Mulan's daughter ) and loved the message too, she had to learn some very valuable lessons & I love the descendants series and I really enjoyed reading it & definitely would recommend if you are a Disney Descendants movies fan or you love Mulan : )
Lonnie's Warrior Sword A 9-year-old Lonnie and her mother Mulan are spending some bonding time sparring. Lonnie is struggling with the sword but is captivated by the power and history it holds. They’ve been training for 3 hours but Lonnie still isn’t tired. She wants to be flawless and be a warrior like her mother. She pleads with her Mom for more time practing, but her mom shares with her the scret of being a great warrior. She says it’s not about physical strength. It’s the strength you have in your heart. And it’s not something you can train for, but you’ll know it when the right challenge presents itself. Lonnie wants to know when that will be but Mulan just says that (that’s) a wise question.
At Auradon Prep, Lonnie is re—reading the R.O.A. R rule book. Lonnie has been made captain of the team by Jay on a technicality. The rules state that the team will be comprised of a captain and eight men. The page Lonnie is reading states that each member of the team shall be inducted at a special ceremony, during which they will present their official sword (the weapon which they will participate in all future competions). She needs to find a special sword and find it fast. The ceremony is two weeks away.
While sparring with Jay, she notices his sword (long and silver with gold inlet on the top and an ornate metal handle). He says proudly he’s won every competition he’s entered with it. He says that the sword your inducted with is really important. Most he said of the team member’s swords are inherited but since that wasn’t an option, he got his from a shop in Auradon. Lonnie wonders if she should just do this too but it feels hollow. But this gives Lonnie an idea. She tells Jay to take over practice and rushes off.
Mulan writes the Imperial Council and request Shan-Yu’s sword as her birthright. She makes sure to put in all her contributions to Auradon and accomplisments and is pretty confident it’ll go in her favor. It takes 3 days to get a response and when it comes her request has been denied. The Council doesn’t think she’s proven herself yet. At first, Lonnie thinks it must be a joke that the guys were playing. But what if it wasn’t. She thinks about getting her parents to appeal but then quickly decides she’ll have to earn it like her mother did. Jay suggests they just steal it. Then something about the Imperial City strikes him as familiar. It’s where they host the annual Auradon Warrior Challenge. Jay says it’s the ultimate challenge of strength, stamina, and willpower. He’s always dreamed of being in the contest. He tells Lonnie she can enter.
Jay offers to train Lonnie, but he senses she’s hesitant. She asks Evie and Mal if they know what it’s like to really want something and they’re like duh. We did come from the Isle of the Lost. They tell her she’s the girl that can do anything and Lonnie agrees they’re right. She won’t let the fear of not winning because she’ll be the youngest to go on the show stop her.
Jay explains how the competition works. Day one was the elimination round where the competitors had to take on an obstacle course consisting of three extremely difficult challenges. The ten people who completed this obstacle course with the fastest times got to stay on and compete in the final competition on day two, which Jay said was always a big surprise, so it was virtually impossible to train for it. But they can train for the elimination round with consist of a swinging component, a climbing component, and a balancing component. The first thing Jay has Lonnie do is climb a rock ledge with 20lb weights tied to her waist. When she struggles he pushes her by saying of course, she can’t do it. She’s just a girl. This makes her go faster but she quickly burns out.
Jay tells her never act out of emotion. Act out of confidence. He tells her that first mistake was letting me upset you and using that as your fuel. And lesson number two: sometimes speed is your enemy. Even tho the obstacle course is always about the top times, she won’t qualify at all if you fall off or burn out. Know when to take it slow.
*In the days leading up to the competition, Lonnie spent long hours climbing trees in the forest, swinging from branches, shimmying between buildings, walking barefoot across hot coals, dodging dragon cannons on the tourney field, and balancing on spinning logs. With days to be in the Imperial City, Lonnie and Jay don’t have any transportation to get there. Lonnie makes a deal with Jordan that if she’ll grant her three wishes, she’ll use one of them to get her out of a commitment she made to Ben to make a documentary of the VK’s so it’ll influence other VK’s to get to come to the island. She’ll use one of the others to get there. Jordan agrees and says she’ll go with her.
Jordan gives Lonnie a makeover (complete with blond wig and heavy makeup) that’s so amazing she can’t even recognize the girl in the reflection in the mirror starring back at her (cute nod to the song). For some reason, Jordan doesn’t want Jay to come but Lonnie convinces her. She makes her wish and then finds herself back home. Lonnie notices Jay acting weird around Jordan. At the registration she uses her grandmother’s name Li. Lonnie starts to get cold feet as she checks out all the competion but Jay tells her she’s got this! It doesn’t help when Jay points out the guy who won the last 4 years (Chen) and she sees him lifting giant kettle balls over his head. He’s also 25.
Jay and Chen immediately take a dislike to each other and exchange insults. He then issues a challenge to Lonnie to go against him climbing the “Mountain of Doom” (a climbing wall there that’s 30 ft high). Lonnie takes him up on it but then adds the first one to the top wearing 20lb weights wins. Chen climbs up fast but he isn’t use to the weight so Lonnie easily wins the challenge using Jay’s advice about speed. Jay tells her not to underestimate him. He’s won the challenge five years straight and he has something to prove. Lonnie tells him he worries to much. The sword is as good as hers.
The challenges are announced. In the first challenge, “A Monkey’s Dare” he warrior must make it across the water using only the ropes. Lonnie is prepared. (Jay had made her swing from tree branches for hours on end, timing how long she could go without falling or letting go. He’d said it was designed to strengthen her grip and her ability to propel herself using only her body weight.) In the second challenge “The Great Wall of Fire”, each warrior must shimmy between the two walls with their feet on one wall and their hands on the other. Only the walls are scalding hot. Lonnie’s also practiced this between the buildings in Auradon.
The last challenge is called the Bridge of Despair. o complete this challenge, warriors must cross the ravine using the bridge. *(from the book) Most people were eliminated after the first obstacle, failing to grab on to one of the ropes and plunging into the water below. Some were knocked out by the Great Wall of Fire, the heat burning through their gloves and forcing them to drop. And only a few were able to conquer the Bridge of Despair. As more and more competitors were eliminated, Lonnie started to like her odds of making it to the final round the next day. But when her number is finally called, Lonnie cant find her helmet and without it she’ll be disqualified. Jay suspects that Chen took it to disqualify her.
The daughter of Yao thankfully lets her borrow hers and tells her she just wants her to bet Chen. Only its too big and covers her eyes. Chen does have a smug expression when Lonnie looks at him. A long commercial break is announced because they say there’s something wrong with the bridge, but when its time Lonnie can’t help feeling somethings wrong. Even tho Chen has tried so sabotage the bridge, she’s able to get across with minutes to spare and she makes it to the next round. In their suite, Jay is dead set on making Chen pay. Lonnie tho says she can’t be worried about. Jay storms off. Lonnie and Jordan order room service. Lonnie then sees a text on Jordan’s phone from Mal saying how much she enjoyed filming and she can’t wait to see the edit. Lonnie vows to get the truth out of Jordan right after they eat. But then there’s a knock on the door.
It’s an invitation from Ari (the host of the event) for a celebratory gala for all finalists tonight at 8:00 p.m. at the Silk Nightclub. But when they get there there’s no one there. It’s a trap. Chen tells them he’ll make sure someone finds them after the final eliminations. Lonnie tries to use her second wish to wish them out but the lamp is in the drawer back in the room.
(Lonnie’s phone and Jordan’s phone are the same). Jordan confesses she and Jay had a fight but she doesn’t say about what. She also admits she’s scared because of the pressure put on her from the document. Lonnie admits to her that she’s also scared which is why she wanted her to make her look like someone else so if she failed she wouldn’t have to live with failing as Mulan’s and Shang’s daughter (who never fail at anything). She promises Jordan she’ll keep her promise. She tries to stay up while Jordan falls asleep but eventually, she falls asleep too.
Jay finds the note about the party and finds them. Luckily, he has the lamp and Lonnie uses a wish to get them out. They make it to the competition and the final round is announced called “The Mountain of the Blazing Suns”. Each contestant has 60 seconds to destroy as many blazing suns are they can with a sword while balancing on a platform. The winner will win the title, a medal, and a cash prize. Chen gets 22 suns. No one else comes close. Before her turn, Lonnie snatches off her wig and announced she’s the daughter of Mulan. Lonnie wins the contest with 23 suns. She goes back to the Imperial Council but even tho they’ve seen the contest, they deny the request for the sword. So, she asks to speak to the “All Knowing One”. They say that’s not possible and send her on her way.
Lonnie wants to go home. Jay tells her to go back to the Council, demand her sword, and even go up against the All Knowing One if she has too. He tells her to be brave but then when she finds out the reason it’s been awkward between Jordan and Jay is because Jay got fed up with Jordan’s bragging that her dad was the most powerful genie of all times to which he reminded her how his dad had him under his control. Lonnie tells her he can’t really talk to her about being brave because if he was brave he’d apologize (and she thinks he’s scared to). Then she goes off by herself.
Lonnie goes to the museum to see the sword and meets the All Powerful One. She says it wasn’t the Council’s decession not to let her have the sword. It also wasn’t hers. It was the sword that decided. Clearly it wasn’t impressed by what she’d done. She suggests that she use one of the wishes but she’s already promised the last wish to Jordan. The lady asks if Lonnie knows what she’ll do and Lonnie says yes. (Earlier before the competition Jordan offered her the lamp if she needed it. Even if it meant breaking her promise).
Lonnie makes her wish. All of a sudden the barrier around the sword disappears. This confuses Lonnie because her wish was for Jordan but the lady explains that because she showed loyalty to her friend, she proved her honor to the sword. And that is the true test of a warrior. Then she remembers what her mother told her when she was nine. Jay apologizes to Jordan on the way back. She says she forgives him and calls him a dork. Back at school, Lonnie finds out that the Wi-Fi was out so no one saw the show. But she finds out she wished to go to the Imperial City without getting caught. So, it was the lamps doing.
At the induction ceremony, Lonnie unsheaths the mighty sword of Shan-Yu and held it high above her head, she felt the spirit of the sword reach out and welcome her. Congratulate her. Bind itself to her. They were connected now. They were a team. And together, they would go on to do great things (from the book)*
My Thoughts: Now I get why it took me so long to want to read this one. I knew I had to complete it to finish the series but something was repealing me from it. I’d see this one and NOTHING was motivating me to read it. I think I even started it and lost interest immediately. It’s because there’s a sports competition in it. Those kinds of books usually bore me because they’re way to detailed and I just don't care for sports. But I will say this wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. It had a good message and I thought the throwback to the song “Reflections” where Lonnie looked in the mirror and didn’t recognize the girl staring back at her was a nice touch. I kinda thought Jay and Jordan were into each other a lil bit. Still kinda think that. But I’m good with Jay not having a match like the rest. They don’t all have to.

I love these kid’s books! They are a good escape from reality sometimes. This one continues after the second movie. Glad I watched it because it does reference some things in it. Quick read that I recommend for the younger ones (and really the older ones too 🙂 )
I think this one is my favorite so far in the series, mostly because it's so funny. What book with Jay as a prominent character wouldn't be funny? But Carlos is the next book and he's funny too, so we'll see what my opinion is then.
Lonnie is captain of the R.O.A.R. team and is going to be inducted soon. One slight problem - each member of the team chooses a sword to be inducted with and that is their sword for all of their tournaments and competitions. Lonnie knows exactly what sword she wants, but the problem is getting it.
The sword of Shan-Yu is a family artifact and Lonnie has always known that she'd inherit it when she was old enough and worthy. She believes she's more than proven herself with her adventures with the VKs. She writes to the Imperial Council to request that the sword be release to her and is... denied?
She can't believe it. How can they not think she is worthy? Jay comes up with a solution. If Lonnie wins the Auradon Warrior Challenge (think American Ninja Warrior :), that will prover her worthiness to the Council.
With Jay's help, Lonnie trains in one week to enter the AWC. Then she enlists Jordan's help to get there. Lonnie uses her first wish to get to the Imperial City without getting caught.
I'm not going to spoil the competition. But it's awesome and very well written. I enjoyed it a lot.
There was a great message about fear of failing and the teens work together and strengthen their friendship. I enjoyed getting to know Jordan a little better. I'm hoping she's in Descendants 3. I was wanting her in 2, but that obviously didn't happen.
This is a fun series and a each book is a quick read. If you like Descendants, & especially if you've seen Wicked World (it's on YouTube!), you'll like these books.
I found this book a long time ago for school assignments and it has stuck with me ever since. The characters were so well developed and the plot was engaging and full of unexpected twists and turns. The themes of friendship and loyalty were explored in a meaningful way, and I found myself really connecting with the characters in the story. The writing was beautiful and the pacing was perfect, allowing the reader to really get lost in the story. I highly wanted to purchase another version of this book 😭💗
Okay it was nice but it was lacking alot of things, like I would like to see mulan after the tournament and Shang is ince mentioned and never again. Why? I mean I know mulan is the main point in Lonnie story but shang is also her parent and not to mention her older brother is nowhere to be seen. Also I refuse to believe Lonnie and Yi-Min didnt grow up. Mulan and shang saved vhina together with her friends of course their kids grew up together Plus who is that chen guy?

While I am glad to see a book dedicated to Lonnie, I am disappointed by how the villain was dealt with. They did nothing to bring him to justice. Sure his record is broken, but how is that fair punishment for what he did? This book has no proper justice. Though to be fair, the kids did get away with sneaking out so who can say?
3.5 stars. Closer to the end the story didnt go the way i thought it was going to go, which is a good thing. I loved all the challenges. It kinda reminded me on the tv show Ninja Warrior, so if you love that show you will really like this book.
I really wanted to like this one considering how mulan is one of my favorite disney movies and i really liked Lonnie's character in the movie however this was a bit boring ☹️ i liked jay's character in this book tho
Will Lonnie be able to prove herself worthy of the sword her mother, Mulan, won from her battles? Find out in this installment of Disney Descendants School of Secrets!
This was my favorite of the series! I have been reading a chapter each night to my 7 year old and we both loved this story. I wish there were more as we've now read all the School of Secrets books!
I read this as a mini review of my daughter's book. She'sa little book worm too. It was pretty good with some good lessons and enough adversity for our character to overcome. Mulan is one of my favorite Disney characters so I was jazzed when the Descendants had her daughter included as a bigger role in their universe. I'm not a huge fn of Mal, as she tends to be a bit "extra" and dramatic, just not one of my favorite characters, so her absence was appreciated. My daughter is excited to read this now and I love being able to share books with her now.
I absolutely adore this book!!! I didn't know much about Lonnie as a character before reading this book, but this has given me more insight on her and helped me understand her, and now she's one of my favorite characters in descendants! I liked Jay before reading this book but now I LOVE Jay! I also already loved Jordan but now I really love Jordan! And I absolutely love the dynamic between the 3 of them! If you are a descendants fan, DEFINITELY READ THIS!!!!!!
Lonnie is about to be inducted as captain of the Auradon Prep R.O.A.R team. As part of the induction ceremony, she'll need to choose and present a sword that she will use throughout all R.O.A.R competitions. For Lonnie however, buying a sword from a shop won't do. She wants the sword her mother used to defeat Shun Yu. Lonnie knows that one day she'll inherit the sword as part of her birthright and thinks that she is finally worthy enough to have it. When the council in the Imperial City deems Lonnie unworthy of having the sword, she goes to the Imperial City with Jay and Jordan to take part in the Auradon Warrior Challenge in an effort to show the council she is worthy of the sword I really love how this book focuses on Lonnie, I feel like even with two movies and the Wicked World shorts, we don't know that much about her because she doesn't get enough screen time. This book gives Lonnie more of a backstory and depth which is great. I think the lessons in this book are ones that everyone must learn, Lonnie is a great role model for everyone especially girls. I like how this book takes place during final exam week. As a college student, I can relate to what the students are feeling as they prepare for final exams. If you like Mulan, Aladdin or Descendants, you should read this.
