Queen of Extinction

I love this retelling of Sleeping Beauty. It was hard putting the book down, which I had to do at times since I had so many errands to do, but every little chance I got I would pick it up and continue reading. I like how Aurora is a strong character despite being considered Infirm, and because of that her friends overprotect her, but she still fights to have equality. I love how Jorah, being a strong dragon, quickly appreciates and respects Aurora for her strength and sees beauty in her. Even with Raith I was drawn to him and hoping for him to change from being the villain to having his own happy ending. I love how the friends are all close and fight for each other. I look forward to reading the next book in this series to see what happens next.

A wide variety of topics. Some of dark humanity is actually bright humanity triumphing over the dark.

The Alcatraz Coup, a prequel to The Jacq Of Spades!! Patricia Loofbourrow leaves me always wanting to know more!!
The Alcatraz Coup by Patricia Loofbourrow fills in everything I may have wondered regarding the beginning of the ruling families!!
Having already read both The Jacq Of Spades and The Queen Of Diamonds, both brilliantly written, fast paced and impossible to put down, I was not disappointed in the complete story of how the four ruling families came to power.
A domed city, a King killed by his psychopathic son determined to start his rule with destroying those living in the most abject poverty, including The Dealers Daughters and the story of two men who started it all.
With great heroism and a horrifying loss Xavier Alcatraz, head of the guard at the palace, decides he simply cannot act on the new King's orders and slaughter women, children, the elderly and infirm and anyone on the other side of the fence. Realizing also the King will simply not stop there, he has to be stopped!! He is thankfully also found an ally willing to collaborate in a former history teacher, Acevedo Spadros.
I loved so many of the main characters and found myself surprised at times at the seemingly black and white or good or bad in which we may think of mobsters or gang members that was challenged by some of the least expected characters willing to lay their lives on the line for the good of the people and to stop the slaughter of so many innocents!
An excellent read and definitely five stars!
Patricia has generously given me a copy of The Alcatraz Coup to read and give a review

Review based on The Alcatraz Coup by Patricia Loofbourrow

This is a short story that give a reader history of the Bridges, i really like it, as I was interested in the begining of 4 Families.
In this story we follow quite a full of characters. I liked it as i was able po form a whole world.

I highly recommend it to fans of the series, because it will allow to get full pleasure in it - it answers questions that we get during reading books about Jaqline Spadros.

I read box-sets for one reason only: it is an inexpensive way to read authors and discover them. A good story will encourage me to seek out more. This is a solid box-set. Has some real winners, many of whom I will read more from the authors. A few were less good, or far enough outside my interest that I won't read more, and one real stinker. All in all, an enjoyable collection that should have gotten 5 stars, if it wasn't for Ellora's Quest, the last story in the box.

I am disappointed at the editor who assembled the set, as that book should not have been included. While some of the books had editing issues, this book did not seem to have been edited at all. Nearly every page had spelling, grammar, and tense errors, plot holes, and an ending that can only be described as "I got tired of writing."

If you've ever been blessed by children singing, "This Is The Song That Never Ends", you know exactly what it felt like trying to read this story.

Good and Bad

There is certainly a bang for your reading dollar in this anthology. I'd like to have rated the book higher based on some of the entries but there were a few clunkers that needed editing or at least a proofreader.
One story actually had an editor's note in it. It said, If you're planning a cliffhanger you should start to wrap things up. Good story but the reality that it was a tease sure dampened the experience.
Have fun with this one, but you may need to skip a few of the books along the way.

Some of the books in this collection were very good, but about 40% were cliff-hangers, which I find both frustrating and unsatisfying. I wish the collection had an index of which books had cliff-hanger endings so I could just skip them. If I like a book, I am likely to buy more by that author. However, I never buy books by an author who has first sold me an incomplete product.

I picked away at the set, reading a story here and there over a year and a half (ish). There were a few stories that were particularly amazing, most were interesting and well written, and one or two were duds. WELL worth the $0.99 I spent.

This had so many good reads in it. I had to write down the next in the series so I could go on to the next or I would have never finished the book. Dark Humanity has 22 books of various authors. Anyone looking for some good reading for those long winter days should read this.

I read most of this, I skipped some because I had either read them before or I just couldn't get into the stories. The last story in here was good but the author needed to have someone proofread it prior to publishing it. There were a lot of grammar errors in it. Overall, it was a very good read.

This was an interesting mix of stories...some I really loved and some I just liked. Those I loved were intriguing and I will look for the next installments. Overall, the writing is good and editing is up to par. However, the last book, while very descriptive and should have kept my interest, fails with editing; it is so awful, that I am not inclined to pursue the series. There are a lot of misspelled, missing, or incorrect words used...which was very annoying and actually made it hard to read. Still, overall it was great fun.

*So far, this review is only for Queen of Extinction by Gwynn White and Erin St. Pierre*

Queen of Extinction - 5 out of 5!

This was wonderful and such a cool, unique idea! I loved the sort of ugly duckling heroine, who is made beautiful by her actions. In Aurora's world, there are the Ables and the Infirms, as an Infirm you exhibit some type of deformity or inferior aspect to your person, and are looked down upon by the Ables. Aurora is an Infirm, but she is also the Princess of Ryferia, so when her brother, the current King, is killed, she is next in line to the throne, but her evil uncle has other plans for the throne, and sets out to take down Aurora, and it's proving none to hard to convince other people of power that Aurora is unsuited to lead Ryferia due to her status as an Infirm. Aurora's only chance is to find a husband in a months time, but with her less than stellar looks and physical ailments, she hasn't exactly been sought after romantically, and she worries that no one will want her, so she purposes a tournament, where princes are invited to compete for her hand in marriage. Aurora knows that the men won't be trying to win because they want her, but she needs to do what she can to lead Ryferia. There is lots of intrigue in this book, there are multiple plans at play from various characters all at the same time, and while some are of noble reasons, many are for the nefarious. I love that magic and potions are a big part of this story, and I love the set-up of having trials to win Aurora's hand; it creates great suspense and makes for a really interesting story. I also loved the different type of Fae involved and other supernatural creatures. Aurora is strong and intelligent, and despite her putting her foot in her mouth sometimes, I found her honesty refreshing. All the characters are strong, unique characters, and I really enjoyed all of them. The story felt so full with all the wonderfully different personalities. When this book ended, I wanted the next book right away, so I could continue the story. I'm really interested to see how this plays out. I loved it! Can't wait for the next!

Petra - Nirina Stone
This is a very enjoyable and easy read. Stone has the knack of getting right to the heart of her characters, their feelings, and their thoughts.

Sidney's world is laid open for the reader, and before long you are completely drawn in. It's kind of like the harrowing of 'Mad Max', coupled with aspects of 'The Road', with a hefty sprinkle of 'AI' thrown in for good measure.

I loved the innocence and strength of Sidney. She was brought up to survive, and survive she will. I loved Henry's judge of character, his protection, and his way of thinking.

Petra... well, what can I say about Petra? A bot who has her orders to carry out - find those Allendians who have the 'flu, and kill them. But her previous programming starts to 'seep through' until she seems like a fully fledged 'person'. Fantastic!

Hook:
Loved this book! It's really true when they say all villains become villains somehow. I loved how this story was the beginning of how Captain Hook came about. Archie Jameson is truly a decent guy that happened to take cover in the wrong tavern. With that his life was changed forever. Though when he became captain, he was still a decent guy. He earned the respect of his crew and fell in love with an Indian. I like how this author makes Peter Pan out to be the villain. I don't know if any of you watch the show Once Upon A Time, but there version of Neverland, Peter Pan also wasn't such a good guy and Hook (known as Killian on the show) is a very likable character. This book really had be on Captain Jameson's side the entire time. Peter was not a nice boy. I can't wait to read book two in this series. This is a must read! And don't worry, Captain Hook makes his appearance before the end of the book!

Heart and Souls:
With Earth collapsed in war an anarchy, the Catholic Church has stepped in to take control. There are reapers who work hand in hand with detectives who specialize in soul theft. When Constance getting a new partner Mikon, they have to learn to work together to catch Noah, a person who has stollen over 300 Souls. Forced to work together Mikon and Connie are forced to work together and put their heart and souls on the line. Will they be able to trick Noah before it's too late? Lives will change and sacrifices will be made with this page turner of a story. Can't wait to read the next book in this series.

Have read quite a few of these lately, boxed sets, which is a good way to find new authors and perhaps read a story from a known or favorite writer that isn't offered anywhere else.Jamie Thornton, in Dark Humanity collection as well as the collection of short stories That Moment When, is one although still need to read Germination. Have read some of Felix R Savage {Freefall} as well as the newer 'fairy tales' books some are in. K N Lee {Half Blood Dragon} seems to be familiar name to me as well. All in all, for the price with the content, you can't go wrong. Believe got the change to this one thru Gwynn White giveaway, you know, the we give it to you for free and hope you review it.

For the Price and the Content you can't go wrong

The date is wrong but goodreads slipped my mind when doing review, not sure why, usually right after amazon.

Queen of Extinction - This book is so packed full of amazing characters. I love Aurora and her friends. She is a stubborn princess, but suddenly with the loss of her brother, she is having to battle her uncle for the throne and that includes getting married ASAP. There is to be a set of quests/trials for her hand. There is danger hiding just around the corner and perhaps even in the hands of some close to her. I really loved this book and can't wait to find out what happens next in this retelling of Sleeping Beauty.

Will update more as I get to reading others books in this wonderful set!

Short story in a collection of 22 "books" (the 1st one was great, though). A "pretty girl" ad exec has a car accidents, and Soul Stalkers want her soul (assuming she has one, which is not clear).
Every second sentence starts with "Kyra" or "She"; every other one is a question. The ONLY good thing is that this is really short, even for a short story. Good enough to make me never want to read anything from this author.

Here is a review of the 2 books I have read so far which are wonderful reads. I can't wait to get to the rest of them because it seems like an amazing group of full books to enjoy:

Goddess of War by K.N. Lee:
This writer gives us an intriguing story that feels so real even though it has magic and Gods/Goddesses. They seem so human and vengeful that you get sucked right into the story and the chaos. There are twists and turns you don't really expect but will completely enjoy. Absolutely wonderful as I have come to expect from her.

PETRA by Nirina Stone:
In a post apocalyptic world with acid rains Petra is programmed to kill diseased survivors. Slowly as she moves from pursuing to protecting, her old programming emerges and she changes. Great story that grabs you emotionally and as the world is revealed with wonderful imagery you are hooked til the last page.

I've read Immurement from this set so far. This is my first dystopian novel and I must say, I was taken in completely with the story and the characters. I loved it and could not put it down. Derry may be flawed and she definitely makes mistakes, but she does learn from those mistakes. The story flowed really well and is quite marvelous and unique. I just could not put this book down. It has a suspenseful flavor that goes throughout the story and does not let you go. With Norma Hinkens' descriptions I could just see the scenery as she described it. It was so clear to me and that also made the book tremendously enjoyable. I thought the writing terrific, the storyline was amazingly clear, and I definitely would recommend this book to not only YA, but everyone. I am looking forward to reading all the other stories, too.
