Excellent study of the biblical concept of love. It was an overwhelming reminder of God’s love for us. Nothing, absolutely nothing in us drew His love. He loved us because He chose to love us. It was also a very convicting read as I listed the characteristics of love mentioned in the book and then evaluated my own love. Woefully short if the mark. But God is helping me to grow in my live.
This was an amazing read. Truly insightful analysis of love in the Bible. I left with a far greater understanding of biblical love and just how central it is in the Bible. I cannot recommend this book highly enough. 10/10
One of the most misunderstood concepts by our modern world, and unfortunately, by many present-day evangelicals, is the biblical meaning of love. Morris' study, while primarily a word study, is an excellent introduction.
I first bought and read this book shortly after its release in the early 1980s, and I have frequently referenced it over the years. So it was good to sit down and read it again - from cover to cover - all these years later. I have always enjoyed Morris as an author - and would credit F F Bruce and him as very strong influences in not just the development of my theological understanding but in my approach to God’s Word. I am finding much joy as in the latter stage of my Christian life as I revisit these books of my more youthful years. Some books seem almost foreign in the re-read (as I am a different person than I was back then), and then others like this one is really like getting back with an old friend over good coffee!
This is a superb book on the topic of Love in our Scriptures - and not just the New Testament - quite a wonderful coverage of the Old Testament as well. Whilst Morris does delve into the Hebrew and Greek side of things, it is still quite accessible even if you don’t know the Biblical languages.
If you enjoyed, C S Lewis’ “The Four Loves” then you would enjoy the far deeper and more thorough coverage that Morris does here.
Highly recommended to all Christians who want to understand their God and their Scriptures better :)
