Elin Barnes grew up in Spain. Her father is a film director and her mother a Swedish author (with a past life as an actress). After graduating HS, Elin pursued her dream of becoming an airline pilot. When her eyesight impeded her to fly passenger aircrafts, she switched gears and obtained a BA in Philosophy. After a short stint working for a criminal appeals lawyer, Elin returned to Spain to get her MA in International Commerce. For the last decade she’s worked in technology for companies like, AT&T, T-Mobile, Google, Microsoft, TiVo, and Samsung. Her passions for law, technology, and thrillers inspired Elin to write a thriller set in Silicon Valley, where innovation is always brewing.
I really enjoy murder/mystery/thrillers. Unfortunately none of them seem to be set in modern day Silicon Valley. Ms. Barnes takes a genre, and infuses it with the modern day excitement of today's tech industry. I live there, and Ms. Barnes paints a setting that is both real and vivid. The characters sound and behave like South Bay folks do. A broken protagonist, a gritty partner, and a complex villian, what's not to love? The law enforcement and gang characters feel real, and struggle with moral dilemmas. I know several of these folks, and their counterparts in this book have voices that feel genuine.
Lots of good reasons to pick up this one. I'm looking forward to reading Ms. Barnes' next book (I really enjoyed the first two, "Justification For Murder" & "Smoke Screen" as well!)
This is a well-written and gripping story with well described characters showing lots of depth. True to its Silicon Valley settings, there is plenty of state-of-the-art technical gadgetry on display along with good old-fashioned stubby pencil and white board work as law enforcement officers from multiple departments try to solve a set of crimes that appear increasingly complex. The book seized my interest right away and kept me racing through all the pages to the end.
This is the final book in a set of three.i read all 3 this week and they are so good i couldn't put them. Down. This author is such a good writer. Im hoping she continues on with this series. i loved the story and all the characters.
We are proud to announce that BLOOD ALLEGIANCE by Elin Barnes is a B.R.A.G.Medallion Honoree. This tells a reader that this book is well worth their time and money!
As I read this bone chilling crime novel set in Silicon Valley, I felt pulled into a dark world of exotic secrets, overwrought emotions, and tingling suspense. Could these crimes happen here? I was reminded of Gothic tales.
Blood Allegiance contains elements of modern Gothic fiction: rationality vs. irrationality, guilt, strangeness within the familiar, monsters (human ones in this book), and humiliation. Barnes uses language and plot to instill uneasiness and fear in the reader. Her diction is less elaborate and ornate than the Gothic literature of the past. Instead, it reflects the language of everyday life in Silicon Valley in 2017. Barnes twists her plot in surprising directions as it weaves around the central story creating a maze of relationships, motivations, violence, and secrets. Protagonist, Darcy Lynch, and antagonist, Oscar Amaro are complex and individualized. Both are damaged and both have the capacity for “getting the job done” at whatever cost, yet are imbued with deep humanity. The surprise ending showcases these two characters as clouded mirrors of each other. The characters are many, and their relationships are webbed. I found the hierarchy of gang members well researched, as are the portrayals of law enforcement agencies and employees. Barnes does her homework.
For me, Blood Allegiance was easy to read and authentic in narrative and dialog.
