The kingdom of Iden has reclaimed its hold on the capital. Yet, the Spirit, Adele, has lost the true battle against her enemy, Locien, who has done everything in his power to unravel a nation, destroy a family, and wreak havoc wherever he goes. Desperate to defeat him, Adele readily accepts the help of a mysterious man that only she can see. The Spirit finds herself facing confrontations at every angle: an enemy bent on killing her, a power corrupting her from the inside, and a kingdom on the brink of rebellion. Honor bound to serve, Adele races to save it all before the final fight can end the Spirit legacy forever.
Reckoning picks up right where Spirit: Awakening left off. The story does start a little slower, but it makes sense in the context of the first book’s ending. (Definitely read Spirit: Awakening first!)
The author introduces a very important character right away and keeps the story moving along at a brisk pace. This book is a bit darker in tone and has more political intrigue than the first. Personally, I enjoyed this difference and often it shows how much Adele, Harper, and Llaine have been through together. Some minor characters from the first book return and we get to learn much more about them. Lastly, we get to meet some interesting new characters from Llaine’s homeland Seqhad. This book could have easily been more of the same thing, but you can tell the author has grown along with her characters.
Reckoning has many exciting battles, dramatic plot twists, and interesting new locations to be explored in the lands of Iden and Seqhad. The tension builds steadily as the story progresses and ends with an exciting and satisfying conclusion.
Overall, I found this book to be a fun read and a worthy sequel. I didn’t really plan on reading it as quickly as I did, but it drew me in and kept me excited to see what was going to happen next. I enjoy K.M. Riley’s writing and look forward to reading whatever she does next.
On a side note, I hope someday the writer returns to this vibrant world she has crafted and gives us another story. I would love to read a prequel from Locien’s perspective and see his rise to becoming the villain.
