Amazing artwork and solid writing. Only the dialogue sticks out like a sore thumb. Almost every single noun has a prefix (meta and techno being used for 2/3 of them) and that becomes annoying fast. The shoddy Croatian translation definitely doesn't help.

The dialogue in this is terrible. Yes, this is a sci-fi story, yes technology is awesome but seriously? The prefix techno/meta/holo/neo/bio is slapped in front of everything. It turns the dialogue cringy and utterly grating. We have phrases like : " How dare you techno-cardinal do this to his techno-eminence, he who represents the Techno-technos". Stop. Seriously how did they not realise how unecessary and annoying it was? We get it, it's a world of technology but tone it down with the robot-guillotine, the techno-cardinals... just call them guillotine, cardinal etc!

Aside from this, the story in itself was confusing and does not really properly set up the plot and characters which remain vague. And what it lacks in clearness and plot value it compensates with utter (meaningless) violence. I mean people like that probably exist but eh. Not my thing...

No to se sve s vremenom privelo kraju.

Jodoverzum!

The comic depicts disgusting ageism towards women. For the author, women only exist when they're young, while men in his comics can be old, disgusting, and sleazy. It's sickening. The author is completely detached from reality. The comic is kitschy, chauvinistic, ageist, and unworthy of any attention. The author is a pathetic old man who perpetrates ageism towards women and fulfills his pathetic fantasies.

In the world of Metabarons, Jodorowsky employs a very drastic division: a woman is a sexual being almost exclusively as long as she is young and capable of procreation. Once this stage passes, her body in the author's narrative ceases to be an object of desire and becomes a symbol of decline or merely a "vehicle of wisdom."
Here's how this plays out in practice:
"Permanent" Sexuality: Heroines like Honorata are extremely sexualized while they are young. Jodorowsky and artist Juan Gimenez celebrate their young bodies with an almost obsessive intensity. However, as soon as the heroine reaches middle age or older, her sexuality fades in the comic. The author doesn't portray mature women as desirable beings.

Escape to Rejuvenation: Honorata's storyline is key here. As her body ages, her consciousness is transferred to a young, ideal body. This is a clear signal from the author: an older woman in her natural body is no longer attractive in this story. Only by "returning" to youth can she regain her status as an object of desire and an active participant in romantic/sexual intrigue. Comics Guild - Metabaron Caste

Middle Age as a "Shadow Zone": In Jodorowsky's work, you'll rarely see a woman of 45 or 50 enjoying a sexual life. Women of this age are either martyr mothers, embittered priestesses, or simply disappear from the frame to make room for new, young heroines. Contrast with men: The men in this saga can be 70 or 80 years old, made of metal and sporting gray beards, yet the author still portrays them as "alpha males" with powerful libido and sexual drive. It's a striking example of ageism that only affects women.

This last bit is truly hilarious. Especially since in the real world, most old men simply struggle with impotence, while women's age doesn't affect their sexual performance at all, only their fertility. Men, on the other hand, experience age in the context of a drastic decline in potency, and when it comes to fertility, even if it is preserved, the genetic material is often damaged, as research has also confirmed. I understand that Metabarons is a bit of a sci-fi opera, but it doesn't quite add up. It's more like the author's chauvinistic disconnection from reality and some kind of sick fantasy.

Currently available on Kindle Unlimited, this is yet another series in the Jodoverse, this time concentrating on the Meta-Baron incarnation of the Incal, set I think just before the original Incal series.

The storytelling is loyal to Jodorowsky’s style, but thankfully cuts out the mystical bullshit for a straightforward military space opera. In that sense, it works well enough.

The art is very good in an airbrushed photorealistic cinema FX style similar to the Simak series in the Jodoverse.

Altogether it was an okay read and I’ll happily read the following volumes as long as they are on KU. But it’s no classic.

So gorgeous to look at. Need we word bubbles? Well, this is more restrained than the metalanguage paleoAlejandro parafoisted on techno-us 22 time cycles ago. This is part of a longer bit, so I am not bothered that we build towards things throughout. Pure set dressing. But what sets! This is where Hoopla’s panel-by-panel makes the reading feel more like storyboards, more cinematic. Few splash pages to pull back to.

He's back!

The Metabaron is back and he's gone back to his ancestral roots. The real star of this tome is the cyborg, half-man, half-robot, Wilhelm 1000. This guy is huge. He's a powerhouse! What continues to make this series great is the vast array of characters, the human element which can also be found in the robot narrator, the ever faithful Tonto.

Very much in the tradition on the original Metabarons series including ultra violence. But so far not quite on the same level for me. I do like the very realistic and colorful art style. Surely want to read the next volume.

Gorgeous artwork. Interesting story. Not sure this is the best place to start. If it is, then it just throws you in without explaining anything while remaining intriguing enough to keep the reader interested.

Superb!

It is at least on par with Incal... If not better. Metabaron is a damn fine MC for this series.

We're Back

Straight back into Metabaron shenanigans, as if we didn't already have a good enough end. Villains are even more dastardly, religion is even more disgusting and the Metabaron is still dramatic.

I love the worlds of the Incal and Metabaron, and Metabaron does have the feel of a tragic saga, but sometimes the world just feel too shallow and not lived in enough to really have the stakes felt. This particularly seems to be lacking in character development and its weight is dependent on larger saga of the meta-barons more than its own story. The art is far more brutalist than the whimsy of Incal and that works both for and against the text.
