“So, the next time I get really sad, I will remember the things that make me glad. I will dry my eyes and blow my nose too, and let the happier me come through!” Jennifer Waddle ends her children’s book, I Get Sad When . . .
~ What ~ Part of the A Day in the Life of a Little Kid series, this oversized thirty-page paperback targets children ages two to six years old who enjoy a secular reminder of how to not be sad. After a dedication page, two lines of rhyming are on the left sides of the pages and full-sized, colorful but sophomoric illustrations are on the right. The ending has two coloring pages, tips for parents, and the author’s biography.
In this rhyming tale, a little boy explains that he is sad when his favorite snack gets dirty, his mother cries, he can’t go to grandma’s house, his flowers don’t grow, a downpour won’t let him play with his friends, or his dog is sick, and more. But then he realizes he has a family that loves him and becomes happy.
~ Why ~ Children today often need help understanding their emotions, including being sad. I liked that this story shows how frustrated the child got when things were not always perfect and going his way, but by reflecting on his family, he could change his attitude. Adding the two black and white pages to color and the four tips were helpful.
~ Why Not ~ Some readers may not like the father’s anger about having his toothbrush fall into a toilet. Beginner readers may be frustrated with the two- and three-syllable words. Due to the simplistic artwork, there may be not enough visual stimulation for older children.
~ Wish ~ I wish the coloring pages had clearer lines.
~ Want ~ If your child is at the stage of learning about emotions and how to deal with them, this one on being sad will cheer them up while helping them cope.
