*** This is a Dark Root short story, a holiday gift to my readers. It can be read alone but is best read after The Daughters of Dark Root series because of spoilers. ***
When Dark Witch, Larinda, views her future in a crystal ball, she is troubled by what she sees:
A handsome soldier and a lavish Samhain party thrown by her cousin Sasha - a party Larinda wasn't invited to.
And, as every child who reads fairy tales knows, it’s never a good idea to exclude a witch.
Journey back to Dark Root’s early days in this mystical short story, for lovers of magic, and magick, everywhere.
April Aasheim is the second oldest of six children. She spent her early years traveling the western part of the country with her mother and step-father. During this time she met a lot of interesting people and developed a love of 'characters'.
April is married and lives in Portland, Oregon with her husband and her cat Boots.
I loved the Dark Root series and when I found this prequel I was really excited to read it. Truth be told I read it in one sitting. It is a novella so that is not truly saying much. From the synopsis, I was expecting a lot more than what I got from the storyline so was a bit disappointed.
At least now I do understand why Sasha never could settle for one man and Larinda well...jealousy...can be a very ugly emotion that just festers and grows. Again we got to see where it began, yet it all felt superficial. Which explains my disappointment.
I wish I could give it more stars but I just can't due to the superficiality I felt through most of this novella.
This is a great look at Larinda's motivation, and so also shows what generally motivates evil. The unrelenting jealousy and desire for what others have are shown starkly in her inability to even understand love. The author with a few short strokes highlights the lack inside those who harm others. Brilliant.
It's an intriguing look into the cousins relationship, one full of jealousy and the other full of knowledge and love. Every Novel and novella in the series is with the read. Fantastic writing, world building, character interaction and the wonderful characters themselves.
Ms Aasheim always explores her characters in complex ways that makes them so believable. For anyone who has read the Dark Root series this short novel will not disappoint. This would also be an awesome stand alone short story to get a sneak peak of the writing style of April Aasheim and excite your imagination to know more about Dark Root.
April does it again. She took me to a place where I had a real inner look at a character that had me wondering how they had become the way they appeared in the Daughters of Dark Root Series. And as I saw through Larrinda's eyes she seemed a different but the same person that she appears to be. I loved every moment of this story.
I honestly felt like this was a mere chapter, it was so short and unsatisfying. I'm not really sure what the point to this book was as it really didn't answer many questions (I've read the rest of the series.)
Well this book explains why sasha never found true love and why she has many girls from different people. I wish this book was longer I read it in less then thirty minutes.
Well written short story told from Larinda's point of view. Her jealousy of Sasha is something that is very apparent. This gives us a little insight about some of the history between Sasha and Larinda, as well as some other things.
Awesome books cant wait for more! It has been pleasurable reading about the witches of darkroot. I feel more & more powerful & witchy! Like I'm there dancing & celebrating. Good good read!
After reading the while series, I read this little short story. It's cute for a teen or a super quick read. But, I will say you understand more of the series now😊
