Художественная провокация одного из самых интересных новых немецких писателей. «Метан», заявленный как начало фантастической трилогии, написан Крахтом в соавторстве, сразу после возращения в Германию (последние 10 лет Крахт жил в Таиланде). В этом полудокументальном, полухудожественном трактате меланхолия достигает невероятного, фантастического масштаба. Крахт здесь предстает писателем, разочарованным не просто в европейской цивилизации, как Уэльбек, а в человеческой расе в целом. В этой квазинаучной новелле он доказывает, что человек — существо, производное от метана (привет Газпрому!) и само вместе с другими животными производящее метан. Чтобы запустить новый взрыв антропогенеза (а выход, по Крахту, только в этом, поскольку старое человечество годится лишь на то, чтобы жрать продукты метанового синтеза и испускать переработанные газы), два энтузиаста из числа буров, говорящих на языке африкаанс, решаются на ядерную бомбардировку горы Килиманджаро с целью вызвать огромный выброс метана…

Christian Kracht is a Swiss writer and journalist.
Kracht was born in Saanen. His father, Christian Kracht Sr., was chief representative for the Axel Springer publishing company in the 1960s. Kracht attended Schule Schloss Salem in Baden and Lakefield College School in Ontario, Canada. He graduated from Sarah Lawrence College, New York, in 1989.

I love love love Christian Kracht, but this experimental satire is out of control, and not in a good way. Kracht and his buddy Ingo Niermann have climbed Mount Kilimanjaro together, and instead of delivering one more of Kracht's fascinatingly weird, tried-and-true travelogues, those two have managed to write a convoluted, vain play on the genre of the good old conspiracy theory, giving absurd political explanations for the reasons the world needs a climate collapse (yes, you read that right). The main problem: It's not funny. It just goes on and on and on, linking events and people in all corners of the world to the rise of methane (again: you read that right), but not by giving factual, but fictional reasons. And after around 100 pages, we get some very bad pictures proving, again, nothing.

First published in 2007, this is considered to be Kracht's weakest work, and I have to agree: The short book parodies insane conspiracy theories, but much like in the case of Das Strunk-Prinzip, one single idea varied over such a long text just does not hold up. No wonder that while there's tons of scientific literature on pretty much everything else Kracht has written, this book has been largely ignored by scholars.

And just so there's no confusion: Kracht is of course no climate denier, but 13 years after its publication, this book feels extremely outdated because in times like these, no one would criticize conspiracy theories by giving insane explanations for the climate crisis - there are just too many people out there who are serious about their denial of climate change.

Was Kracht und Niermann schreiben, entzieht sich jeglicher Bewertung. Es lässt sich mit nichts vergleichen, dass ich je gelesen habe. Es hat sehr gut in mein Lektüreplan zu Verschwörungstheorien gepasst, da die Absurdität, die Verschwörungsnarrative annehmen können, manchmal witzig, manchmal beängstigend vorgeführt werden.

A book of superlatives. Nothing in this satire is true, but maybe everything is. It has the worst photos ever published in it. The core of the book is very serious (methan is 23 times worse than CO2), the rendering however bends it towards the hyper-hilarious that finally makes ends meet. It is a marriage of all and nothing, as always clad in spotless and cruel elegance. A funny sidenote: When it came out, some people wanted their money back, because they took it all lierally.

Schön schräg. Kann mir die Entstehungsgeschichte dieses Büchleins, eigentlich ein Reisbericht, gut vorstellen: Kracht und Niermann, zwei Freunde, besteigen in einer Gruppe den Kilimandscharo, sie übernachten in diesen vollgefurzten Zelten, nerven sich über die anderen Touristen – und über Showbusinessleute und Politiker. So spinnen sie eine grosse Verschwörung, das Methanungetüm gegen die anderen. Alles läuft darauf hinaus, dass die Rassisten aus Südafrika den höchsten Berg Afrikas, die Ursuppe der Menschheit, weg-A-bomben wollen. Eine Spielerei, komplettiert mit Fotos aus dem Reisealbum der beiden.

Teikšu godīgi, biju gaidījis vairāk. Pēc anotācijas likās tīri OK, bet realitātē? Īs ieskats nesenā vēsturē, kurš savilkts caur kaut kādu pālī radušos domu. Pālī šoreiz domāts, divi vīri kāpj kalnā, saelpojas retinātu gaisu un sāk nākt prātā visādas stulbas domas. Dažas ir smieklīgas, bet kopumā sajūta tāda, it kā būtu uz ielas saticis kādu pilsētas dīvaini un šis būtu pastāstījis savu dzīves redzējumu. Teikšu godīgi, es varētu labāk.

habs nur im Kontext von "climate fiction" gelesen, fands aber eher wenig anregend - zum Glück war es sehr kurz

Das Buch wurde mir bei Amazon vorgeschlagen und ich habe spontan bestellt.
Vorgeschlagen wahrscheinlich, weil ich seit Tagen Krachts "Ich werde hier sein im Sonnenschein und im Schatten" im Tab geöffnet hatte, bis ich es einfach auf meine Wunschliste geknallt habe.
Also habe ich ein Buch gekauft, was ich nicht unbedingt wollte, und das Buch, was ich wollte, nicht.

So weit die Voraussetzungen.

Zum Inhalt: Der Erde wird methanisiert - eine Art von Terraforming. Belegt wird das mit aktuellen und historischen Fakten aus Politik, Wirtschaft, Wissenschaft und Religion.... und Fiktion.

In den Amazon-Rezensionen heißt es "Ein gewollt eierloses Buch von zwei Männern mit Eiern aus Stahl, von Männern, die Keith-Haring-Statuen mit ihren Zähnen zerbeißen, ein grandioser Durchfall der Postmoderne, ein Dingsbums, ein Schuschu und yeahyeah." - und ich glaube das trifft es ganz gut, nur, dass ich nicht so begeistert davon bin.
