Now a classic of sock knitting, Knitting on the Road holds up. With her concise but charming descriptions and clearly-written, detailed patterns, Nancy Bush makes a variety of beautiful socks accessible and enjoyable to knit.
Looking forward to knitting some of these, but it is hard to choose. Unlike some sick books where I only like one of two of the patterns, this one has quite a few that interest me!
Fun for knitters who are feeling adventurous, but can't currently take a trip. Nancy Bush creates 17 patterns based on travels around North America and Europe. If you like knitting socks, and hearing about places maybe you'd like to visit someday, this is your book.
Check publisher web site for errata, and bear in mind that the errata applies to the first printing only (check the reverse of the title page at the bottom for the printing). The second printing also has mistakes, but IK leaves you to your own devices to solve.
The editor's hand is heavy here, having rewritten some of the stitches to match her desires, rather than Nancy's Estonian-slanted style (see in particular SL2K1PSSO (which produces a line) *not* the author's preference, which would be S1K2togPSSO (which produces a line of X's)).
Ultimately gave up on Friday Harbor, after frustration after frustration with chart 2. There is a purl column (or two) missing. (The errata omits the purls entirely.) There are other similar patterns in the world, ones that won't cause me tear my hair out.
I have knit most of the other patterns, with fine results.
Nancy Bush knows her socks. What lovely patterns! Great technical advice! (double start cast on is now my favorite) The spiral format is terrific, especially if you are using a chart for the lace or cabled patterns. This is a must-have book for sock knitters or anyone who wants to knit socks and is more than a very beginner knitter.
I love this volume - both for it's easy spiral-bound format (perfect for knitting on the road!) - and for it's quality designs. I did take this book on the road with me a few times, knitting socks. Another great book from her majesty, Nancy Bush.
Sock patterns are all made for people with a size 7 or smaller foot with a 7 inch foot circumference . There are no modifications for people with larger feet than that. I was not impressed with the selection of patterns.
