A chilling novel about the nightmare of a corrupt and brutal dictatorship.
The star of Roberto Bolaño's hair-raising novel Distant Star is Alberto Ruiz-Tagle, an air force pilot who exploits the 1973 coup to launch his own version of the New Chilean Poetry, a multi-media enterprise involving sky-writing, poetry, torture, and photo exhibitions.
For our unnamed narrator, who first encounters this "star" in a college poetry workshop, Ruiz-Tagle becomes the silent hand behind every evil act in the darkness of Pinochet's regime. The narrator, unable to stop himself, tries to track Ruiz-Tagle down, and sees signs of his activity over and over again. A corrosive, mocking humor sparkles within Bolaño's darkest visions of Chile under Pinochet. In Bolaño's world there's a big graveyard and there's a big graveyard laugh. (He once described his novel By Night in Chile as "a tale of terror, a situation comedy, and a combination pastoral-gothic novel.")
Many Chilean authors have written about the "bloody events of the early Pinochet years, the abductions and murders," Richard Eder commented in the The New York Times: "None has done it in so dark and glittering a fashion as Roberto Bolaño."

Roberto Bolaño

Bolaño moved to Europe in 1977, and finally made his way to Spain, where he married and settled on the Mediterranean coast near Barcelona, working as a dishwasher, a campground custodian, bellhop and garbage collector — working during the day and writing at night.
He continued with his poetry, before shifting to fiction in his early forties. In an interview Bolaño stated that he made this decision because he felt responsible for the future financial well-being of his family, which he knew he could never secure from the earnings of a poet. This was confirmed by Jorge Herralde, who explained that Bolaño "abandoned his parsimonious beatnik existence" because the birth of his son in 1990 made him "decide that he was responsible for his family's future and that it would be easier to earn a living by writing fiction." However, he continued to think of himself primarily as a poet, and a collection of his verse, spanning 20 years, was published in 2000 under the title The Romantic Dogs.
Regarding his native country Chile, which he visited just once after going into voluntary exile, Bolaño had conflicted feelings. He was notorious in Chile for his fierce attacks on Isabel Allende and other members of the literary establishment.
In 2003, after a long period of declining health, Bolaño passed away. Bolaño was survived by his Spanish wife and their two children, whom he once called "my only motherland."
Although deep down he always felt like a poet, his reputation ultimately rests on his novels, novellas and short story collections. Although Bolaño espoused the lifestyle of a bohemian poet and literary enfant terrible for all his adult life, he only began to produce substantial works of fiction in the 1990s. He almost immediately became a highly regarded figure in Spanish and Latin American letters.
In rapid succession, he published a series of critically acclaimed works, the most important of which are the novel Los detectives salvajes (The Savage Detectives), the novella Nocturno de Chile (By Night In Chile), and, posthumously, the novel 2666. His two collections of short stories Llamadas telefónicas and Putas asesinas were awarded literary prizes.
In 2009 a number of unpublished novels were discovered among the author's papers.

Is there a limit of ethics in creating art, and when has it gone too far? Distant Star, the 1996 novella by the late, great Roberto Bolaño addresses this question and more as art and violent politics intertwine under Pinochet’s cruel dictatorship. This little novella is a powerhouse and depending on the day and what I’ve been drinking I might even say it is my favorite of his books (By Night In Chile on other nights). Told from narrator Arturo B., Bolaño’s literary stand-in that appears in several of his novels, Distant Star pieces together the life of Alberto Ruiz-Tagle, a little-known poet who would later re-emerge as airforce pilot Carlos Wieder writing poetry in the sky from his plane. The romantic image of patriotism and poetry give way to a horrific truth of the murder and mayhem of Pinochet’s Chile and Arturo must watch from exile and contemplate the horrors of his country. While this is the story of Arturo B. and Wieder, it is also ‘partly the story of the Chilean nation. A story of terror.’ Devastating, dark, and full of Bolaño’s signature blend of noir and gallows humor, Distant Star is a miniature masterpiece and brilliant reflection on the inherent political nature of art.
In an essay by Enrique Vila-Matas it is claimed that Bolaño was asked by publisher Jorge Herralde is he had any manuscripts ready for publication, to which Bolaño assured him he did and would get it right over to him. No such manuscript existed, but Bolaño quickly expanded upon the Ramírez Hoffman story that concluded his earlier book Nazi Literature in the Americas--a collective theme on literature under authoritarianism made up of brief biographies influentially indebted to Juan Rodolfo Wilcock. While there are varying accounts to the validity of this--Bolaño’s entire life is shrouded by incongruous biographical accounts only enhanced by the way the author self-mythologized and secured his immortality as a sort of a legendary literary figure more so than flesh-and-blood man--Distant Star was completely quickly using the chapter from the previous book as its groundworks and went on to become his breakout success. The duality of the story version and novella version fit perfectly into Bolaño’s whole mythos, with the technique of expanding previous popping up in different works appearing through his short stories or the way Amulet is a life-story of a minor character in The Savage Detectives and includes a retelling of the same event that appeared in the latter novel. The variants on stories self-create an effect similar to classical myths and fairy tales and their numerous versions.
As the book opens after a brief preface asserting that this book does indeed take place in the same literary universe as Nazi Literature and is being dictated by Arturo as an updated version of the earlier story because he ‘was not satisfied’, we find Arturo a young college student eager for poetry and the affections of the Garmendia sisters. The sisters, however, have their eyes on Alberto Ruiz-Tagle. A self-proclaimed autodidact, Arturo thinks he is too much of a rich dandy and a certain jealousy is born. The innocence of youthful poet rivalry is quickly shattered a few pages in as the disappearances under Pinochet begin and the Garmendia sister’s are brutally murdered. Some time later, while in prison, Arturo will see a poem written in the sky and so launches the story of who and what Ruiz-Tagle became as military poet persona Carlos Wieder.
Something that I particularly adore about Bolaño is the way that he makes literature seem like the most important aspect of life while simultaneously showing it as fleeting and meaningless. Around the time I read this during a good drunk evening with friends, I took a marker and wrote above my kitchen door “Literature is what matters because it doesn’t,” very much inspired by Bolaño himself. I have since painted over it and moved but I would be willing to bet at the right angle in the right lighting the line may appear like the ghost of a former resident still wallowing in the self-imposed agonies of youth. In Bolaño we often visit the horrors of Pinochet but in a way that still keeps literature central to the tales. While this is a story of murder, as Wieder is definitely a sadistic killer, the focus is on the way it influences his art more so than anything. The image of a plane writing poetry in the sky--curiously often writing lines from disappeared female poets--is romantic but also weirdly tied up with the violence and political atmosphere that comes with the military aspects of the plane.
Where does art and propaganda collide? Wieder, now famous for his aerial art, hosts an art exhibit in his own home expecting his further experiments of the political to further make him an avant-garde legend. What is revealed is nothing less than pure evil and terror as, in a powerful scene, his crimes are fully on display quite literally as if to make an artistic statement. The braggadocio of presenting photos of all the women he has executed in the name of Pinochet and thinking it is art might be one of Bolaño’s most amazing moments. Wieder’s father stands there, unable to see beyond his pride for his son to understand why everyone is escaping in horror, having been confronted with their complicity in these murders by serving in the same government or military. This image of the father is so moving, as if trying to still love his son, or his country in the wake of all that has gone wrong and all the sins committed and blood spilled and lives forever destroyed in the name of power.
What is important here is that the monsters often do not see themselves as monsters, but as great artists or leaders who only did what they felt others were too weak to achieve. This sense of simply being “better” than others is similar to the ethical questions Raskolnikov is trying to understand when he commits his murder in Crime and Punishment. While Raskolnikov is tortured internally for not being able to live up to this, here we find being able to murder and make light of it is not the hallmark of strength but the essence of evil.
Wieder honestly believed actual murder could be made into art, and Bolaño reminds us that there are some lines we cannot cross. Better to fade away into oblivion, as Arturo decides to do than ‘immerse myself in literature’s bottomless cesspools,’ if being an artist means denying your own humanity as Wieder has attempted.
There is an impressive control of time, as this novella spans several decades in 90 pages while managing to make the characters age authentically and events only a few dozen pages prior seem like aged photographs in the mind near the end. Characteristic of Bolaño, the novel launches into a noir-like plotline when Arturo is tracked down by a detective to see if he can identify Wieder as the writer of neo-fascist articles that appear in right wing magazines around the world. The final 20 pages of this book are extraordinary, with Bolaño pushing us to the precipice of terror using a tone that seems straight out of a horror novel instead of a poet drama. In the end in the pursuit of justice we only find more violence piled onto violence in the name of justice. While one feels better than the political violence, Arturo asks us to consider what violence we can accept and what does that say about us.
Distant Star is simply amazing and one of my favorite books by an author who is most likely my all-time favorite. As is his style, this is a meditation on Bolaño’s whole generation of youth brought to the butchery of political violence and oppression, looking back with smoldering anger at the world that snuffed out the beauty he believed in so strongly. This would make an excellent entry point for any readers who have yet to read this Chilean genius and those who have already read his most notable, larger works will find that he is just as satisfying in his smaller works.

Permitidme empezar el comentario dando las gracias (muchas gracias) a mi cabezonería sin cuyo empuje y determinación no hubiera sido posible la lectura de esta novela. Gracias por animarme a volver a Bolañó tras el mediano éxito que tuvieron conmigo sus detectives salvajes (prometo solemnemente una atenta relectura). Gracias porque no paró de incitarme a continuar a pesar de que el recelo con el que empecé no disminuyó tras las primeras páginas, todo lo contrario, no era capaz de encontrar sustancia ni objetivo alguno. No podía ser que tanta gente pudiera estar tan equivocada con el genio del autor, el problema tenía que ser mío. Continué y mi recompensa no tardó en llegar, es más, no paró de crecer hasta alcanzar el final de la novela. Gracias (muchas gracias).
Bien es verdad, que esta feliz obstinación se vio pronto favorecida por el atractivo de los campos literarios por los que la novela iba transitando, lugares reconocibles y en los que me encontraba muy cómodo, un territorio que me iba recordando cada vez más a la escritura de mi admirado Vila-Matas. Un terreno literario que va más allá del mero entretenimiento, en el que la forma es clara, sin barroquismos innecesarios, donde no hay solemnidades ni tremendismos, pese a lo doloroso o lo profundo de lo relatado, donde la desesperanza se tiñe de ironía; un reino literario donde la trama no es el monarca absoluto, donde no es extraño que la corriente se desborde en afluentes tan atractivos como el cauce central del que parten; un mundo creado en primera persona en el que personaje y autor confluyen, se mezclan, entrelazan sus vidas, la real, la imaginada, la soñada, consiguiendo una impresión de realidad que envuelve y disuelve la ficción, y que casa muy bien con el estrecho vínculo que ambos autores establecen entre la vida y la literatura que “es básicamente un oficio peligroso”.
Y por último, aunque no menos importante, en pocas páginas volví a experimentar la fascinante sensación de ser invitado por el autor a completar el libro, a hacerlo mío, a involucrarme en la narración, a convertirme en su cómplice, una sensación acrecentada por lo abiertas que quedan las muchas cuestiones que el libro plantea a pesar de su brevedad y que se articulan en torno a dos binomios fundamentales, agresor y víctima, por un lado, y acción y pasividad, por el otro.
Toda la novela está recorrida por el símbolo del doble, de lo doble, del perseguido y potencialmente perseguidor (el siamés martirizado que se convierte en martirizador y viceversa) que se complementa con la formulación de un Yo no ajeno a lo siniestro, a lo oscuro, a la maldad. Todos somos parte del juego, todos sentimos en mayor o menor grado la fascinación del mal y del malvado, todos estamos hechos del mismo barro. Un planteamiento que acojona y que puede ser muy peligroso si resbala por la pendiente del relativismo, pero que capta muy bien el alma de sociedades como la española tan bien retratada por Goya en su pintura negra “Duelo a garrotazos” (e imagino que el propósito de Bolaño es aludir a la chilena cuya bandera ostenta una estrella, una estrella distante en el nacimiento de la novela).
“No parecía un poeta. No parecía un ex oficial de la Fuerza aérea Chilena. No parecía un asesino de leyenda. No parecía el tipo que había volado a la Antártida para escribir un poema en el aire. Ni de lejos."
Y junto a ello, e íntimamente relacionado, el cuestionamiento del papel a jugar, la alternativa entre acción y pasividad. En este sentido, es muy significativo el sueño sobre el barco que naufraga en el que el narrador, al final, se ve a sí mismo en el agua agarrado a un palo de madera podrida comprendiendo que Wieder (la encarnación del mal en la novela) y él habían estado en el mismo barco que se hundía, el barco que uno había contribuido a hundir y el otro no había hecho nada por evitar. Y no menos significativo es el principio: “Yo estaba en una fiesta en la cubierta de la popa y escribía un poema o tal vez la página de un diario mientras miraba el mar.” En este caso el hundimiento se produce mientras se mira el mar y se escribe un poema, en otros casos el horror se extiende a nuestro alrededor mientras se piensa en “cuestiones sin importancia. El tiempo, por ejemplo. El calentamiento de la tierra. Las estrellas cada vez más distantes.”
Pero no hay solución fácil. Romero, el investigador tras la pista de Wieder y poseedor de esos “Ojos que creen en todas las posibilidades pero que al mismo tiempo saben que nada tiene remedio”, en un momento importante de la novela dice lo siguiente: “en cuanto a que no puede hacer daño a nadie (el Wieder desaparecido), qué le voy a decir, la verdad es que no lo sabemos, [...] ni usted ni yo somos Dios, solo hacemos lo que podemos.”
Y en esta disyuntiva entre acción y pasividad se da una especial relevancia a la función del arte, a su compromiso con lo social y lo político, a su relación o no con la moral, a sus límites, a su utilidad como indagación de lo humano, como indagación o catarsis personal, a su utilidad en general o su fracaso absoluto: “En adelante escribiré mis poemas con humildad y trabajaré para no morirme de hambre y no intentaré publicar.”
Quizás tengo razón Romero, solo hacemos lo que podemos y quizás la literatura, esta literatura, solo tenga sentido como barrera a un mundo en el que “la Poesía la hagan los no-poetas y la lean los no-lectores.” Solo por ello valdría la pena… ¿o no?
P.D. El martes 17, en una de esas casualidades que tiene esto de la lectura, El País publicó un artículo de Enrique Vila-Matas (“¿Qué Faulkner cae sin que nadie lo mire?”) en el que se confirma que la cita que antecede al texto de la novela (“¿Qué estrella cae sin que nadie la mire?”) es real, es de Faulkner y pertenece a un libro de poemas que el autor americano tituló “The Marble Faun and A Green Bough”.

Deși e populat cu poeți, ca în Detectivii sălbatici, romanul lui Bolaño descrie perioada cea mai întunecată din Chile, aceea de după lovitura de stat din 11 septembrie 1973, care s-a încheiat cu moartea președintelui Salvador Allende și cu o reprimare barbară a simpatizanților lui.
Unul dintre personaje, Alberto Ruiz-Tagle, pare a participa la un atelier de poezie găzduit într-o încăpere a universității din Concepción cu un scop străin de acela de a discuta despre rolul mîntuitor al poeziei. Participanții au opinii de stînga și rolul său este, probabil, să-i identifice. După lovitura de stat, Alberto Ruiz-Tagle (acum sub un nume schimbat, Carlos Wieder) se înscrie într-o „echipă a morții”. Doctorul Jekyll face loc domnului Hyde. Primele lui victime sînt surorile Garmendia (Verónica şi Angélica, fiicele unor pictori) pe care le-a cunoscut la cenaclu.
În timpul dictaturii lui Augusto Pinochet, Carlos Wieder se ilustrează și ca poet vizual. Pilotează un Messerschmitt cu care face acrobații amețitoare și „scrie” în văzduh, cu „fum cenușiu-negricios”, versete din Vulgata (Biblia în versiune latină) și sloganuri stupide, de tipul „Moartea este Chile”, „Moartea este dragoste” etc. Naratorul îi citește compunerile din Centrul La Peña, unde stă arestat o vreme. Notorietatea impostorului crește: a inventat „scriitura aeriană”, lumea bună îi caută prietenia, îl invită la serate artistice. Carlos Wieder ajunge un star venerat. Poeziile lui vorbesc „despre culoarea albă şi culoarea neagră, despre gheaţă, despre surîsul Patriei, un surîs sincer, fin, cu tuşă fină, un surîs asemănător unui ochi şi care, într-adevăr, ne veghează”.
Wieder e și fotograf amator și are fantezia de a organiza o expoziție cu propriile-i creații. Narațiunea ajunge în zona abjecției celei mai pure. De fapt, Wieder a adunat pozele victimelor sale. Pinochet este alungat de la putere abia în 1990 și, în chip firesc, cetățenii îi caută pe cei dispăruți și îi cheamă în fața justiției pe vinovați. Carlos Wieder dispare. Pilotează un Messerschmitt cu care face acrobații amețitoare și „scrie” în văzduh, cu „fum cenușiu-negricios”, versete din Vulgata (Biblia în versiune latină) și sloganuri stupide, de tipul „Moartea este Chile”, „Moartea este dragoste” etc. Naratorul îi citește compunerile din Centrul La Peña, unde stă arestat o vreme. Notorietatea impostorului crește: a inventat „scriitura aeriană”, lumea bună îi caută prietenia, îl invită la serate artistice. Carlos Wieder ajunge un star venerat. Poeziile lui vorbesc „despre culoarea albă şi culoarea neagră, despre gheaţă, despre surîsul Patriei, un surîs sincer, fin, cu tuşă fină, un surîs asemănător unui ochi şi care, într-adevăr, ne veghează”.
Wieder e și fotograf amator și are fantezia de a organiza o expoziție cu propriile-i creații. Narațiunea ajunge în zona abjecției celei mai pure. De fapt, Wieder a adunat pozele victimelor sale. Pinochet este alungat de la putere abia în 1990 și, în chip firesc, cetățenii îi caută pe cei dispăruți și îi cheamă în fața justiției pe vinovați. Carlos Wieder dispare. The importance of Distant Star within the trajectory of Bolaño’s oeuvre cannot be underestimated. Preceding By Night in Chile – its extension, or reworking, in some respects – by a few years, Distant Star is likewise equal parts dark and fascinating. Immersed in the Chilean political scene around the years of the Pinochet coup d'état in 1983, it explores the sinister interpenetration between politics and aesthetics.
Carlos Wieder, previously Alberto Ruiz-Tagle, is the emblem of this explosive encounter: an aviator-poet but also a criminal, whom ‘nobody really knew’, and whose ‘sky-writing displays’ – he writes ephemeral poetry in the sky – both mesmerise and disturb his audience. Not only are ‘storm clouds’ evoked multiple times during the narrative, but the parallel, intersecting framework of symptomatic disappearances alluded to or investigated in its individual-based chapters lends a sustained ominous, bleak quality to the art being variously produced. These are symptomatic disappearances indeed: it is the various professors organising poetry workshops – Juan Stein and Diego Soto – as well as those amongst the best rising poets in Wieder’s circles – the Garmendia sisters, in particular – who are ‘made to disappear’. The implications are vast, because of course all of the vanished characters are evidently intent on approaching life via alternative modes, often living on the margins. In many respects, they adhered to a bohemian lifestyle, in a time where – in the centre of Concepcíon – the coup implied imprisonment followed by years of exile for any parties manifesting tendencies of resistance.
This short narrative, in fact, is wrapped up in madness; in the analogous ‘ugliness and brutality’ – sadism, one might add – that dominated the Chile of the 80s. How, then, does this reconcile with the ‘mirage’-like art produced by Wieder, and its otherworldliness? What do his poetic acts – simultaneously tinged with the esoteric, nightmarish, and the ‘messianic’ – signify, within this heavily loaded political context? Very early on, there is talk of the birth of the New Chilean Poetry, and the future of Chilean poetry. Through the narrator – one of the poets, likewise in his early 20s, at the start of the narration – there are frequent references to the Chilean poetry and literary magazines of the time. Even more extensive, in this novel, are the insinuations that much of Wieder’s poetry is not quiet his. (Plagiarism and pseudonyms are a constant, as we know, in Bolaño’s work.) But what seems to be important here is that, where power is concerned, politics appears to give way to poetry and vice versa: this is the terrain of explosion – internal combustion – and mirroring anticipated by Bolaño in the prefatory part of this novel. Not incidentally, it presents itself as partially an extension of Nazi Literatures in the Americas. For Wieder, as it turns out, is representative of the propagandist and fascist tendencies that prevailed following the coup. But, of course, these groups operated both cunningly and stealthily, claiming artistic territories in order to conceal their harrowing acts – indeed, Wieder works within the rising trend of Barbaric Writing.
It is therefore highly relevant that this narrative should be shrouded in mystery at all levels, with its central points of convergence being disappearance and oblivion. ‘From here on, my story is mainly conjecture’, tells us the narrator two chapters into the narration. Throughout, there is a fully foregrounded awareness of the possible lacuna existing in this version of things, because the disappearances and ongoings in Chile were embroiled in intrigue and remained distinctly hazy for all those assisting to them – necessarily, given the narrative perspective – from the outside.

This short novel has some similar elements to The Savage Detectives, but it's much darker. Bolaño looks at the sinister side of Latin American poetry movements and politics, as he explores the dark careers and identities of Alberto Ruiz-Tagle, aka Carlos Wieder, a member of the Chilean air force who achieves as small measure of fame as a poet-aviator practicing a dark kind of performance art by skywriting over the Andes. The book's narrator, who met Ruiz-Tagle/Wieder in a series of poetry workshops during their youth, describes the clues that he, a friend, and a private investigator uncover in their efforts to find Wieder, whom they suspect of committing violent acts.
The ominous political reality of Chile in the 1970s and after pervades Distant Star. Friends and acquaintances disappear or are disappeared. Fascist villains as well as leftist heroes move easily throughout the Americas and Europe, adopting and discarding identities as they go. Bolaño threads a strong sense of menace and evil about to be detected throughout, so this book is not a fast read, in spite of its short length.
While reading, I also considered some questions of culpability. What is our responsibility in the face of violence, racism, hatred, and evil? How do we as readers understand the impact of literary movements and art on crimes perpetrated against individuals? What is the relationship between the individual and the repressive state? And how do we as an audience negotiate the relationship between acts of violence and art? All necessary questions, raised by Bolaño in his inimitable style.

Que libro! Cómo puede concentrar tanto un libro aparentemente tan pequeño. Por dónde empezar? El mejor libro que he leído, de los chilenos, de Bolaño. Porque cuando se pone chileno se pone muy muy chileno. Esta historia, la de Carlos Wieder, un maligno, un hombre hecho en el mundo militar de la dictadura chilena, en donde todo le es permitido.
Es la otra cara de la moneda de “los Detectives Salvajes”, está siempre presente la poesía, está el reconstruir hechos, pero mientras los detectives son dos locos que pasan por muchos momentos de la historia, mexicana, aquí se trata de un ser terrible, que vive bajo la protección de la dictadura chilena, que solo puede ser lo que es como parte de un todo que le es cómplice. Como dice un oficial al tratar de defenderlo “sólo hizo lo que todos los chilenos tuvieron que hacer, debieron hacer.. Quién en medio del terremoto de la historia, podía culparlo de haberse excedido en el cumplimiento del deber?”
Hay otros personajes claro, siempre poetas, la poesía siendo un elemento unificador en medio de todo y casi un personaje en la historia.
Hay escritores, artistas, perdidos en medio de un mundo revolucionado, también revolucionarios, que juegan diferentes papeles en esa reconstrucción. Y hay lugar para que el protagonista imagine lo que ha sido de ellos, está todo lo que se va perdiendo, la gente que conoció y que perdió, de quienes solo sabe por el “triste folklor del exilio”. Ese exilio, solo deja eso, pedazos de historias personales que se pueden intentar reconstruir, y las amistades, las familias, van quedando en el camino.
La escena más horrorífica para mí es la de la exposición, ay! No solo por lo que muestra, sino por la reacción de complicidad de los presentes. Y el hecho de que lo puedan defender. Es terrible. Terrible porque además habla de la realidad, no es un invento, Bolaño tiene una forma de llevarlo a la vida que te deja sin aliento. Sus personajes simplemente están reconstruyendo, juntando los datos y armando una historia que pueda ayudarles a completar el retrato de un personaje. Me gusta porque no intenta juzgar, simplemente hacer un retrato, y es más fuerte que cualquier argumento.
“En parte era su historia… y en parte era la historia de Chile. Una historia de terror.”
Este libro te pone de frente con la realidad, mejor que cualquier libro de historia. Arriba Bolaño, que con su arte nos puede despertar a todos.

This short novel, that flew through the dark clouds covering an eerie 70's era Chile, was a breathtaking and chilling narrative that I wish could have gone on for so much longer. Intriguing, with a hidden sinister element, Bolaño seeks to make sense of Chile's turbulent past. He takes his obsession with poets, adds the Chilean Air Force and in particular one Carlos Wieder, to create a compelling read that, despite it's short length compared to the The Savage Detectives, and especially 2666, was a memorable one.
Turn up any stone in Chile, the poet Pablo Neruda used to say, and five poets will crawl out. The fictional narrator of Distant Star, with little surprise is one of them: a young Chilean to the far south of the country caught up in turbulent times, enamoured of poetry, political debate, and the two stunningly beautiful Garmendia sisters. Unfortunately for him - and very soon, for them as well as others, the sisters only have eyes for another of the aspiring poets in their poetry workshop, the aloof and mysterious figure of Alberto Ruiz-Tagle (Carlos Wieder), a vaguely aristocratic young man who does not share the others political beliefs, freedoms, or bohemian lifestyles whilst also hiding a menacing secret. The poetry workshops are taking place all over Chile in the early seventies, just as the socialist president Salvador Allende is being overthrown and General Pinochet's brutal and victorious regime begins. In the vertiginous first chapter of Distant Star, we descend rapidly from the student world, of late nights, literature, and hopeless poetic passions, to the ghastly realities of military repression, murders, disappearances, and an all together uncertainty on what the future holds.
Mostly looking back at earlier times, the narrator, now living in Barcelona, like so many of his countrymen is a haunted man. He spent several months in a concentration camp. Although he is eventually released without charge, he finds he has been expelled from his university and has no chance of getting work in Pinochet's Chile. He then begins a wandering life in Europe that is forever defined by this historical turning point. Hearing more about Ruiz-Tagle's work as a writer, he now learns Tagle is also Carlos Wieder after re-invented himself as an officer in the Chilean Air Force. He is continuing his poetic career, however, using the small planes he pilots he write messages in the skies over Chile, combining violent and patriotic slogans. This skywriting adds still further to the romantic reputation of the young officer, so that when he announces that he is holding a photographic open day style exhibition in his apartment, influential figures from the armed forces and Chilean high society show up for the showing. But what they witness is the opposite of what they had been hoping for. Instead of romantic, bold, heroic images, they are suddenly confronted with the horror and brutality, inflicted in the name of Chile. All the while, the narrator is still struggling to make a career, and coming to terms of what happened to him, his friends, and a generation brought up on literature.
The novel is a mixture, of poets, political histories, detective work/missing persons, all done with a lingering sadness and a nostalgic mindset. In the preface to Distant Star, Bolaño tells us that it is a development worked on from the last chapter of one of his earlier books, his imaginary History of Nazi Literature in Latin America. This is one hell of a development if that's what it is. I felt compelled to breeze through it in an afternoon, but at the same time wanted to drag it out for as long as possible because I didn't want it to end.

Şilili efsane yazardan okuduğum ilk kitap Uzak Yıldız. İyi ki böyle yazarlar varmış, keşke böyle yazma yeteneğin olsaymış dedirten kitaplardan. Borges külliyatının hemen hemen tamamını üniversite yıllarımda büyük bir keyifle devirmiştim. Hala, bir zaman bulsam da tekrar okusam derim. Bolano'yu okurken adeta Borges okuyor hissine kapıldım, bu açıdan da büyük keyif aldım. Belki biraz daha ayakları yere basanı. Uzak Yıldız, Şili'nin Pinochet darbesi döneminden çarpıcı bir kesit sunuyor. Devrimci genç edebiyatçıların idealizmi ve sonradan uğradıkları baskı ve zulm bize pek yabancı gelmiyor. Ama bu bildik bir siyasi roman değil. Kanırtmıyor, çok sade ama derine işleyen bir üslubu var. Karakterlerin çoğu şair. Sonradan katil ve işbirlikçi olan (bunu spoiler olarak görmeyin, kitabın başlarında yaşanıyor bu gelişme), gökyüzüne şiirler yazan, anlatıcı dışındaki ana karakter Carlos Wiedal'ı unutmak mümkün mü... Yine üniversite yıllarımda seyretmiş olduğum, Arjantin'deki darbe dönemine ilişkin Fernando Solanas'ın müthiş filmi "Sur"u ve harika ama hüzünlü tangolar içeren soundtrack albümünü de bu kitabı okuyacak olanlara öneririm. Son söz, çevirinin de (Zerrin Yanıkkaya) mükemmel olduğunu söylemeliyim.

Dünyaya geldiğimiz andan itibaren en iyi ihtimalle, sene hesabı seksen ya da yüz yıllık bir süre biçiliyor bize. İnsan olma yolculuğunda, yaşamda bir noktaya erişmek amacıyla bir şekilde savrulup gidiyoruz. Gördüğümüz en ufak ışığa, yarına basamak umduğumuz şeye sıkı sıkıya sarılıyoruz. Bu doğrultuda içine doğduğumuz toplum, ülke; bir cadı kazanı ise, yolumuz çakıl taşları, tümsekler, çukurlar üzerine çiziliyor. Vahı da kahrı da çok bir ömür yaşamak zorunda oluşumuz, tercih hakkımızın olmadığı doğumumuz ile belirleniyor. Dünyanın en sıcak cadı kazanlarından biri de yakın tarihte Latin Amerika'da kaynadı. Bir dönem, içine doğan insanlarını, haklarından ve şanslarından mahrum bırakarak; acıya ve ölüme mahkum etti. İşte Bolano da onlardan biri. Bu yüzdendir ki yazarın başyapıtı sayılan 2666'ı ortasında askıya aldım. Hemen bitip, yitmesinden korktum. Uzak Yıldız da kısa bir roman olmasına rağmen, okuduğum en keskin romanlardan biri. Otobiyografik öğeler taşımasına üzüldüğüm ve çoğu anında, siyasi olayların gölgesinde yiten giden ruhların izini sürebileceğiniz bir roman. Ancak bu sefer dünyanın öte ucundaki bir debdebeye tam ortasındayken maruz kalmak durumundaydım. Bolano öyle bir atmosfer yaratmış ki insanın kendini ötekileştirmesi pek mümkün olmuyor. Sonunda da muazzam bir ilham içinde buluyor okuyucu kendini. En azından benim için durum bu.
Net, son zamanlarda okuduğum en etkileyici roman. Büyük bir romancıdan, mütevazi ve engin bir roman. Kesinlikle okuyun.

2666'ı ile tanışıp çok hayran olduğum bir yazar Bolano. Yukio Mishima, Marcel Proust, John Fowles gibi yazarları ilk okuduğum an hissettiğim gibi, onun 'dev' bir yazar olduğunuda ilk sayfalarda hissettim. Bu yüzdendir ki yazarın başyapıtı sayılan 2666'ı ortasında askıya aldım. Hemen bitip, yitmesinden korktum. Uzak Yıldız da kısa bir roman olmasına rağmen, okuduğum en keskin romanlardan biri. Otobiyografik öğeler taşımasına üzüldüğüm ve çoğu anında, siyasi olayların gölgesinde yiten giden ruhların izini sürebileceğiniz bir roman. Leerlo me tomó apenas unos pocos días, pero como tengo la maldita costumbre de marcar el "currently reading" antes de siquiera sentarme a leer, figura como si hubiera estado una eternidad leyéndolo. La aclaración viene porque en realidad es un libro muy corto y sencillo de abordar, y la historia realmente es muy llevadera, se lee muy rápido. Yo creo que es un buen policial con toques de terror, y si es muy exagerado asociarlo con éste último género, le pega al palo. La historia sigue la linea de una novela policial clásica, pero en un tono más oscuro, perverso, hasta morboso en ciertos momentos. Me gustó mucho, para ser un género que no suelo frecuentar, me resultó muy entretenida la lectura.

Bolano’nun erken dönem romanlarından birisi. Ruh ikizi ya da içindeki Roberto Bolano olan “Arturo B“ adı ilk kez burada geçiyor. Kitap faşist Pinochet darbesinin yakıcı ve yıkıcı etkilerini anlatan bir ana hikaye etrafında kurgulanmış. Politik bir romandan çok polisiye roman tarzında yazmış yazar, okunması kolay olsun diye sanıyorum.
Bolano’nun sonraki romanlarında daha da geliştirdiği hikaye anlatıcılığı bu romanda hemen dikkati çekiyor, mükemmel bir kurgu ile gerçek ile kurmacayı şiir gibi dizelendiriyor. Hikaye bir başka hikayeye evsahipliği yapıyor, o da bir diğerine. Örneğin Juan Stein’in hikayesini anlatırken on sayfa içinde Çerniyakovski adlı bir Kızıl Ordu generalinin hikayesini, William Carlos Williams adlı bir çocuk doktorunun hikayesini, Arjantin’li şair Di Angeli’nin hikayesini peşpeşe anlatıyor hem de hiçbiri bir diğeriyle ilgili değilken. Sihirbaz gibi cebinden hikayeler çıkarıyor Bolano.

This novel is an extension of the last entry in Bolaño's wonderful earlier work Nazi Literature in the Americas. It's clear why Bolaño made it into a novel, it's one of the most memorable sections of the book. A poet is forced into the Chilean air force and starts a new literary movement by writing poems in the sky above the Andes mountains...
I feel that because I've already read the story which inspired this I didn't really get anything new out of it. However, it is thoroughly enjoyable and probably one of Bolaño's best narratives. I must applaud it for sheer inventiveness and bits of it definitely precurse certain parts of 2666. I think this would be a good one for Bolaño newbies. It's fairly straightforward and is a great example of his unique prose and admirable characters.

Bolano yolculuğunda üçüncü kitabım. Hemen hemen yazarın tarzını anladığımı söyleyebilirim. Kaba bir özetle şöyle söyleyebiliriz: Metnin temelini oluşturan yapıştırıcı amaçlı bir öykünün arasına giren, metnin esas meselesi olmasa da yazarın ve esas öykünün dünyasını derinleştiren yan öyküler. En sevdiğim anlatı biçimlerinden biridir bu. Bolano da herhalde okuduğum en hikayeci yazar.
Bu hikayeciliği İhsan Oktay Anar gibi birbirinden kopuk bir biçimde anlatmıyor. Çünkü zaten arka planda işlenen bir Latin Amerika atmosferi var ve o atmosfer bu şekilde oluşturuluyor. Hem de büyülü gerçekçiliğe kaçmadan ilgi çekici hikayeler anlatabilmenin kendisi büyülü bir şey; okuduğum yazarlar arasında sıradan hikayeleri en başarılı anlatan yazarın Bolano olduğunu söyleyebilirim. Mo Yan de bu konuda çok sevdiğim bir yazardır ama onun hikayeleri genelde epiktir; Orhan Pamuk gibi atmosfere dayalı, çekici ve derinlikli bir üslupla yapmıyor bunu; ya da Alice Munro gibi Çehovcu bir içgörüyle yapmıyor. Bunların hiçbirini yapmazken, ucuz olmadan nasıl hikaye anlatabiliyor gerçekten çözemedim.
Neyse kitabın kendisine gelelim. Uzak Yıldız, faşizm karşısında değişen, yıkılan ve çirkinleşen insanların hikayesi. Hem faşizm her yeri ele geçirirken edebiyat yapmanın tuhaflığından bahsediyor, hem de sanatın nasıl faşizm aracı haline gelebileceğini irdeliyor.
Wieder ilginç bir karakter. İlk olarak onu şiir atölyesinde görüyoruz. Herkes gibi, ama herkesten de biraz farklı. Pinochet darbesiyle, darbeden hemen sonra Wieder, faşizm saflarına katılıyor ve bizim kitapta şahit olduğumuz ilk cinayetini işliyor. Zamanla gösterişli biri haline geliyor, şiirini, faşizmin ürkütücü şiirini gökyüzüne yazıyor. Malum sergi sahnesine kadar Wieder'in karizması hiç sarsılmıyor, sorgulanmıyor, bir kahraman gibi yaşamaya devam ediyor. Sergiyi ise faşistlerin faşistlikleriyle yüzleşmesi olarak okuyabiliriz. Kırmızı Pazartesi benzeri bir şekilde hasır altı ediliyor Wieder'in sapkınlığı. Yine de otoritesi sarsılıyor.
Kitabın sonuna kadar devam eden süreçte ise, Wieder'in peşine düşülen dedektif hikayesini okuyoruz. "Dalgalar bizi uzaklaştırırken o anda anlıyorum ki Wieder ile ben aynı geminin yolcusuymuşuz, fakat o, geminin batmasına katkıda bulunmuştu, bense onu engellemek için pek az şey yapmış ya da hiçbir şey yapmamıştım." Can Yayınları baskısının 126. sayfasındaki bu cümlenin kitap için önemli bir yere sahip olduğunu düşünüyorum. Wieder'in, yani faşizmin peşine düşüyor, yani Bolano "yapması gerekeni" yapıp Uzak Yıldız'ı yazıyor. Kitabın sonunu (en sonunu) da bu şekilde açıklamak mümkün. Kitap boyunca faşizm varken edebiyat yapmanın tuhaflığından bahsedilirken (Soto ölümüne giderken artık iki dergi arasında seçim yapmak zorunda kalmayacağı vurgulanıyor), Uzak Yıldız ile edebiyatın faşizmle savaşmak için bu kadar güçlü bir silah haline gelebileceği vurgulanıyor.
Niye üç yıldız onu da açıklayayım. Bolano'nun kitaplarında her zaman hissedilen Borgesvari bir oyunbazlık var; ama onun dozunun çok önemli olduğunu düşünüyorum. Tılsım ve Vahşi Hafiyeler bu bağlamda çok daha dengeli metinler. Bu kısalıkta bir metin için, okumayı zorlayan bu kısımların, önemli yerlerden çaldığını düşündüm. Nevertheless his work lived on, precariously, desperately (as he would have wished, perhaps), yet it lived on. A handful of young men read it, reinvented him, tried to become his followers, but how can you follow someone who is not moving, someone who is trying, with every appearance of success, to become invisible?
4.5 stars, rounded down. There was a moment of surprise when I realized that I had bought this a few years ago and had yet to read it. Slipping into the familiar landscape of poetry workshops, hormonal Uni students and the spectre of dictatorship. It is this last element which pervades this novel. A comparison could be made to the 'entertainments" of Graham Greene and by no means is that disparaging. Celluloid is also effect at conveying this dread see Winter's Bone (20210) or The Secret in their Eyes (2009).
The 1973 overthrow of Salvador Allende in Chile is the hinge upon which the novel rests. The idealistic hope which framed the poetry workshop is replaced by a Pinochet dictatorship voracious to extirpate the subversive elements of the society. Poets and their ilk are at the top of the list of these deigned threats. Distant Star is in theory a footnote in Bolano's Nazi Literature in the Americas. It is also a variation on the human spaces within the ideological. The caprice by which a mass grave can be imagined a collage. The footing can prove tricky in these matters. There are some interesting glosses on surrealism and OULIPO.
The final act of this occurs in Europe, principally Barcelona and the noir resolution again appears deliberate. The ambiguity is again a provocation, petitioning whether the reader is an accessory, complicit by tacit page turning? I believe Goodreads Lee said that this was a proper primer for 2666. I can't say I disagree. I have reflected on this novel all day and while pondering chief characters I do wish the narrative was longer, much longer.

The benefit of reading Bolaño in order, as I am, becomes apparent. The final invented writer/poet in the novel published before this, Nazi Literature in the Americas, is the subject of Distant Star. I began to recognise the ploys of Carlos Weider, namely, writing his poetry with plane in the sky. As ever, there are young deadbeat wannabe poets in Chile, this time in the turbulent 1973-4 years. Plenty of allusions, to writers real and imagined. The structure is more narrative than the aforementioned book that came before it, but the novel is equally filled with long-winded digressions about made-up writers, fascists/Nazis, murders and other bizarre happenings. Bolaño is a writer's writer.

Satelliti in cerca di un’orbita distante dal male
Una stella brilla, seppur distante, ne cogli la presenza, fisica, oggettiva, il suo essere stella dovrebbe rassicurarti, indiscussa dovrebbe essere la sua funzione: guidarti, come nel mare, i primi naviganti, la stella polare. Ma questa stella non è il nord, questo è il sud, il profondo sud, quello “in culo al mondo” direbbe Lobo Antunes, quello che rigetta i suoi figli e li sparpaglia nel mondo, ispanico prima ovvero latino americano e poi europeo, di una moderna Barcellona, magari. E fa odiare loro la propria patria e gliela fa rinnegare mentre ne canta, malinconicamente le virtù.
Dove risiede la virtù del Cile dopo l’11 settembre 1973? Quando tutto sembra perso, dove si può ricercare quel che era, quel che è stato? Si ha il bisogno di una ricerca, preme l’esigenza di una risposta. Avvertito è il dovere per lo meno di dire quel che c’era. E in Cile c’era la poesia, in Cile c’era la vivacità culturale, anche femminile, l’università, c’erano gli studenti, si respirava cultura. Molti sono spariti, gli altri sono dispersi e disperati vivono il loro anonimato facendo i commercianti, nulla racconterebbe di essi i trascorsi culturali, i sogni infranti, la vita spezzata.
E allora chi ha ancora, seppur dopo una vita raminga e povera e lontana dalla patria, la forza di cantare, lo fa, in modo prepotente, originale, violento e soprattutto attraverso un’assenza, un personaggio che pare incarnare i mali del mondo, sfuggente, etereo, irreale. Questo è per me “Stella distante”, la storia di un non personaggio, un parto letterario necessario affinché si compia un omicidio virtuale, quello del male.
La sua forma letteraria è impregnata di metaletteratura , rimanda ai labirinti borgesiani, storie che richiamano altre storie, che formano un universo coeso, dove la centralità è solo apparenza perché ciò che conta è l’infinito satellitare che gli ruota attorno. Chi è Alberto Ruíz-Tagle? Ancora ve lo chiedete? Non ha nessuna importanza.

Cuando leí la sinopsis, el argumento de esta novela me llamó mucho la atención. Pero la verdad es que no hay "argumento", casi no hay "trama" propiamente dicha. Nos encontramos con una serie de retratos de personajes, que el narrador va describiendo, uno tras otro; aunque, el eje central es Carlos Wieder: fascista, poeta, aviador, fotógrafo, asesino. En la novela se nos va contando lo que se sabe de él, se trata de reconstruir su historia y se pondera sobre su conexión con los años convulsos de la dictadura chilena.
No sé si existe algún parecido real (es mi primer Bolaño), pero mientras leía no podía dejar de pensar en Borges y en sus libros inventados. Hay nombres, fechas, títulos de revistas y de libros, autores y poetas, todos casi siempre extensamente enumerados y que dan una sensación de validez histórica (aunque -supongo- no lo es ni a palos).
No sé si las demás novelas de Bolaño serán así, pero esta me gustó mucho.
Ahora le tengo ganas a Los Detectives Salvajes.

Quale stella cade senza che nessuno la guardi? W.Faulkner
In questo romanzo breve c'è un taglio poliziesco,ci sono poeti che si improvvisano detectives (eh già!)e accumulano riviste, fogli ciclostilati, film porno, indizi su indizi
La ricerca riguarda un certo Carlos Wieder, che avevano conosciuto con un altro nome , Alberto Ruiz-Tagle...
Tassello dopo tassello si viene a ricostruire la storia di questo ragazzo sfuggente, enigmatico :un poeta autodidatta, un pilota-artista spericolato capace di scrivere con il suo aereo, tra le nuvole, poesie "aeree" in lettere di fumo, oppure un sadico torturatore ai tempi del golpe di Pinochet, nonché fotografo di tali sevizie ,un pluriomicida, esteta della crudeltà?
C'è un senso di indefinibile minaccia che percorre Stella distante , un terrore sotterraneo che è presente,tangibile , più in quello che viene taciuto che in quello che viene raccontato.
Se secondo alcuni questo romanzo è il fratello siamese super rapido e letale de La letteratura nazista in America che è un siamese grasso, lento e goffo: una mole enciclopedica di una calma bestiale
Ora, dato che a me questo siamese è piaciuto assai ,non so quando sarà, ma non mi resta che conoscere pure l'altro!

PS. tra le mille storie che si intersecano nel libro mi piace ricordare Lorenzo ,che perse entrambe le braccia arrampicandosi sui pali dell'alta tensione , con la certezza fatale( ma rabbiosa nella sua fatalità)che si vive solo una volta.

Risalire gli parve interminabile; tenersi a galla ,quasi insopportabile, ma ce la fece.Quella sera imparò a nuotare senza braccia, come un'anguilla o una biscia .Suicidarsi, disse , in questa congiuntura socio-politica ,è assurdo e ridondante.

Admirable la carrera de Bolaño, su historia sí que podría ser un libro de superación personal.
Me contaron que este señor fue autodidacta, que dejó Chile antes del golpe de estado y fue primero a México y luego a España donde desempeñó oficios varios como cualquier inmigrante de bajos recursos, empieza a participar en concursos de narrativa y escribe sin parar. En 1998 se gana el premio Herralde y en el 99 el premio Rómulo Gallegos con Los detectives salvajes. Pero cuando empieza a ser tan reconocido muere.

Yo me aburrí terriblemente con este libro, leía y avanzaba pero cuando me dí cuenta no recordaba lo que había leído porque ya ni le prestaba atención.
Entonces... Estrella distante está basada en un personaje real y está narrada por el álter ego de Bolaño y cuenta (hasta donde alcancé a leer) que este personaje se camufló en un colectivo de estudiosos y poetas y cuando comienza la dictadura se descubre que era un asesino y piloto de la fuerza aérea Chilena que empieza a escribir poemas en el cielo con sus aviones y monta casi un espectáculo con eso. Ya, no me dio para más.

Me explicó alguien que sabe de Bolaño que era un vanguardista y que por lo tanto contradice todos los modelos clásicos y comerciales de escritura, no pretende llevar al lector en un viaje emocionante ni proporcionarle un climax narrativo...entonces...por ahora no es para mí, porque a mí si me gusta emocionarme, tener curiosidad, sentir ansiedad esperando el momento para poder leer. No digo que nunca lo vuelva a intentar pero pasará algún tiempo.

চিলির সালভাদর আলেন্দের স্বৈরশাসনের প্রেক্ষাপটে লেখা উপন্যাস।শুরুটা অত্যন্ত আকর্ষণীয়, শেষটাও।কিন্তু মাঝখানে পড়তে ভালো লাগেনি।গুরুত্বপূর্ণ লেখা কিন্তু বোলানিওর গদ্য খুব একটা টানেনি আমাকে। দক্ষিণ আমেরিকা ও উপমহাদেশের রাজনৈতিক পরিস্থিতির অদ্ভুত মিল আমাকে সবসময়ই হতবাক করে দ্যায়।

Roberto Bolaño riprende il capitolo conclusivo di La letteratura nazista in America, un racconto di una decina di pagine, e lo espande nel romanzo breve Stella distante. Entrambi i libri vengono pubblicati nel 1996.
Il racconto, nella sua sintesi, funzionava già a dovere. Quello che il romanzo perde in compattezza, lo recupera in aperture: è vero che la sua parabola, raccontata in pochi paragrafi, aveva un’efficacia enorme nel cogliere quel tema di cui Bolaño parla spessissimo, cioè il male assoluto; e lo faceva raccontando una storia immaginaria, surreale e ambigua, che proprio per la sua assurdità si collocava alla perfezione tra le atrocità compiute dai regimi dell’America Latina, e, per esteso, dai fascismi.
Nel romanzo, il punto resta quello. Come l’opera da cui deriva, anche Stella distante parla di poeti e avanguardie. La differenza è che qui sentiamo parlare anche di poeti che non sono fascisti: c’è un’apertura sul bene, o su qualcosa che forse è solo neutrale, ma spicca per la sua differenza dal male assoluto. In questo romanzo troviamo le “storie nella storia” tipiche di Bolaño; sono sempre storie che si allontanano per opposizione da quelle dei poeti nazifasciti oggetto di La letteratura nazista. Sono personaggi che somigliano a quelli delle sue altre opere, e che qui si incontrano con quei mostri che lo scrittore ha generato per colmare un vuoto nell’immaginario sudamericano.
Per cui, spesso si allontana dal suo personaggio principale. Quando gli si riavvicina, Bolaño descrive l’accettazione sociale che circonda questo poeta torturatore e assassino, l’abitudine mentale per cui la violenza e la morte portate dal nazifascismo si accettano passivamente fino a ritenerle mali necessari.
Per me, una delle cose più importanti che Bolaño ha fatto è stata sperimentare nuovi modi per parlare del male, di un’oscurità che permea la vita umana, incomprensibile, imperscrutabile, minacciosa, terribile. 2666 e La letteratura nazista in America sono due esempi diversissimi fra loro di come compiere quest’operazione in letteratura. Quando uno scrittore ci riesce — e per me Bolaño lo fa, alla grande — si sente la struttura della realtà stessa scricchiolare. Si creano delle aperture: su un mondo obliquo, che è il nostro, che ora possiamo vedere con un’altra forma, percepirlo attraverso sensi nuovi, sconosciuti.
Stella distante rientra in questo percorso; non è la sua opera più rappresentativa e lo consiglierei a chi ha già letto qualcuno dei testi principali dello scrittore. D’altra parte, l’opera di Bolaño ha una natura ipertestuale, in cui ogni cosa che scrive è collegabile in qualche modo alle altre. Per cui, vi raccomando di leggere anche questo romanzo.
