A heartfelt tale of courage and romance, drenched in humor, adventure, and Cherokee traditions. A treacherous journey leads to a spiritual awakening and a bright new future. Please note that it is a historic fact that the Cherokee were one of the five civilized tribes during the era of this tale. To be considered "civilized" they had to convert to Christianity, learn to read and write English, have a government with laws. This book is fiction. It is not trying to convert anyone to any religion or change the readers values in any way. It is a historic, romantic, adventure. Chewahnih, a young Cherokee maiden, escapes to the wilderness after witnessing a horrendous raid on her village. She is soon joined by a blue-eyed wolf and a raven. These two unlikely traveling companions guide and protect her until she reaches the banks of the Red River. When Chewahnih hears the whinny of a horse nearby and goes to investigate, she discovers a man near death. Stumbling upon another human should bring her relief, but this man has her beloved horse, which can mean only one He must be one of the men that burned her home to the ground and kidnapped or killed her mother, Willow of the Wind. With Wolf at her side, Chewahnih forms a plan to steal back her horse and find out what happened to her mother. If you enjoy Native American culture, animal companions, humor, and emotional journeys of self-discovery, you’ll love this heartfelt, historical adventure. “This engaging, mystical novel is part adventure story, part love story, but most of all, it’s a tribute to the strength of Cherokee character and culture.”—Kirkus Review
I am an avid reader who enjoys novels that include history of people and/or places with some mystery tossed in. This first novel by Kathy fulfilled my likes. I do enjoyed this first book in her Walking Stick series that I immediately dived into Book 2. book 3 awaits me and I think Book 4 is not far behind. This series is based on Cherokee Indians Tribes, a bit of their history and the way they include Christian beliefs. If you have read Kathy's books then you understand. If she is new to you, please visit her website. I promise you will not be disappointed.
This was a very interesting and entertaining book. I enjoyed the characters and their personalities. At times I even felt I was there in the wilderness with them. I'm looking forward to the next two books of this series. Thank you.
An interesting, entertaining glimpse into my own Cherokee heritage. Tahnie's temperament sure shows up in my maternal bloodline ... that stopped before it got to ME, thankfully! The spirit animals were my favorite part. Plus, who doesn't love a great love story!?!?! For a little girl who always played cowboys and Indians, it was a good insight to the Native American perspective. Plus, who doesn't love a great love story!?!?!
This is a fascinating tale following a Cherokee maiden who has escaped a massacre of her village and now fends on her own with the help of guide animals, including a turtle, raven and a bear. Discovering a love interest and news of relatives she was unaware of has her turning homeward again. I found this an intriguing peek at day-to-day lives of Cherokees and the rough world sometimes thrust upon them.
A story of courage and love and Native American traditions.
A wonderful story weaving Native American heritage with a story of adventure and love. The furry characters in this story were as integral as the human ones. Nicely done!
I found this on the same list as the other book that wasn't, and this one is not clean and wholesome. I ran into a cussword in the first several pages.
Interesting and enjoyable read which includes Native American heritage and traditions. Nice job with character development. Look forward to next novel.
I just finished this book , The Raven and the Wolf. I enjoyed her story telling , descriptions are so good I can see the landscape and get to know the characters. I enjoyed this book very much and have already gone on the the 2nd and now on the 3rd book within the last week. I will be ready to finish this series with her 4th book very soon. The stories of Cherokee life back in tribal days were hard but families stuck together .
