Edge #1

Edge of Yesterday

Rate this book
Two of Scottish romance’s most loved authors have joined pens to write a thrilling new time travel series filled with passion, danger, and intrigue. These never-before-published novels will sweep you to Scotland’s Highland Heatheredge, where magic is real, time is relevant, and there is no escape from desire…

Men are disappearing in the Highland crofting village of Heatheredge. The authorities suspect foul play, but without signs of violence—or bodies—they can’t prove a thing.

World champion swordsman Cailean Ross is living the fantasy of a lifetime as the victor of Heatheredge’s medieval reenactment Gathering. But when the fantasy turns into reality, swordplay becomes a fight to the death and he finds himself among the ‘missing’ statistics.

Julianna Mackay flees a man she fears is an evil wizard and literally runs into handsome Cailean Ross. Cailean defends Lady Julianna from her attackers. Together, they set out in search of the key to a six-hundred-year-old curse that can only be broken in medieval Scotland.

When the veil of time is lifted, Cailean and Julianna find that love may not be enough to save them or those they hold dear.

Sue-Ellen Welfonder & Allie Mackay

Sue-Ellen MacDuffie was born and raided in Florida. She is a card-carrying Scotophile whose burning wish to make frequent (free) trips to the land of her dreams led her to a twenty year career with the airlines. Bi-lingual, she flew international all those years, working her flights as foreign language speaker. Her flying career allowed her to see the world, but it was always to Scotland that she returned.

Now a full-time writer, she’s quick to admit that she much prefers wielding a pen to pushing tea and coffee. She spent fifteen years living in Europe and used that time to explore as many castle ruins, medieval abbeys, and stone circles as possible. Anything ancient, crumbling, or lichened caught her eye. She makes annual visits to Scotland, insisting they are a necessity as each trip gives her inspiration for new books.

Proud of her own Hebridean ancestry, she belongs to two clan societies: the MacFie Clan Society and the Clan MacAlpine Society. In addition to Scotland, her greatest passions are medieval history, the paranormal, and dogs. She never watches television, loves haggis, and writes at a four-hundred-and-fifty year old desk that once stood in a Bavarian castle.

Sue-Ellen is married and currently resides with her husband and Jack Russell Terrier in Florida. Readers can learn more about her and the world of her books at: www.welfonder.com.

DNF...

I just couldn't finish this no matter how hard I tried to go through with it.
I'm 21% into the book, and I don't care what happens to the characters, I'm done.

“He had to be dreaming. He had vivid dreams, but this? …. This was no dream.”

Usually in historical romances where there is time travel, the heroine is the one who travels back in time. In the “Edge of yesterday” we see that it is the hero who goes back in time and I must say I really liked the idea of putting a modern man, with better views about the equality of genders, in a historical society where it was expected from women to obey and men to rule.

In fact I wouldn’t mind at all if the authors had toned it up a bit and made more evident his modern views, I am sure it would have been really funny seeing the reactions of the other men if they saw Cailean assist in the kitchen.

There is always the fear with romance stories, especially those who are historical, that the heroine will be weak and obedient so I was so happy to see that our heroine was the exact opposite. Julianna was always strong, didn’t hesitate to express her opinion and was always active even during the fights, and all of these while still acting as a woman of her time would.

The romance was good, I couldn’t get enough of the banter between the main characters and the way Cailean always protected Julianna and loved her strong personality. I only wish the characters had more intimate moments and spend more time alone because while they went through a lot together, by the end of the book there were still many important things that Julianna didn’t know about Cailean.

I also enjoyed the plot, the book was full of action and plenty of battle scenes though at some points, the story was a bit slow, especially in the beginning where it took a while for Cailean to travel back in time. But even in the moments where the story was slowing down, things were interesting thanks to all the intriguing secondary characters and their interactions with the main characters, the most notable of them was Lennox, the heroine’s brother, for whom judging by the ending of this book there will be plenty in store in the next one.

I voluntarily reviewed the free copy that i received via Reading Alley.

3 stars. An average time-travel story, with an interesting plot but drawn-out delivery. I was about to jump ship on this book when it started to pick up about halfway through.

Cailean Ross is a modern day man that (conveniently) is a champion swordsman participating in medieval reenactments. We begin at The Gathering, a reenactment festival with historical roots in Heatheredge, Scotland. Heatheredge takes their preparations for the Gathering very seriously, so much so that they entire town goes to great lengths to become a medieval city as best they can, down to covering storefronts to look more authentic to the 1400's and blocking any modern day conveniences possible. Val Ross heads up the event and even from the start seems a bit shady.

Cailean suddenly finds himself in a place & situation that is so damn authentically medieval, he begins to assimilate to the culture of the good old days - you know, just in case. However, he isn't quite certain that he's miraculously been whisked back in time. I guess it is a rather incredulous thing to believe if it were to happen to you, but it took Cailean nearly halfway through the story to really come to realize he has legitimately time-traveled. The story is rather slow through this point.

Once he is in medieval times - no, not the chain of jousting show restaurants where it's acceptable to eat with your hands - he immediately meets Julianna MacKay. A lady and widow, conveniently for Cailean, literally smacks into him. How's that for a meet cute? She has just witnessed medieval shady dude, Crowe, in the midst of what looked to be a medieval human sacrifice. We meet Julianna's family, all MacKays. We learn of the history surrounding these events and that modern day beliefs of that history differ from what really happened. This is what kind of slowed me down a bit. It seems that nearly everyone is a Ross or a MacKay. Or in Cailean's case, both!

SLIGHT SPOILER ALERT::::Val of modern times is also Crowe of medieval times. Add this to all the questions about Valdar Ross and I'm going a bit batty trying to keep everything straight.

Lady Julianna is one of those heroines that is stubborn and a bit bold for the time period, but luckily she and her family have status, so she gets a pass. She consistently wants to be right up in the action, some of which get a bit drawn out. Her brother Lennox, and the others associated with her family are all just fine characters but no one really stood out as being a great character. The Cailean/Julianna romance was fine. They get together in the end but the book still leaves a cliffhanger for the next book with the Crowe/Val Ross storyline. The next book will feature Lennox and Ginny, Cailean's sister who has apparently just found herself a modern-day transplant in the Heatheredge of yore.

I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley. This is my honest review.

This is the first book in a new historical time-travel romance series written by Tarah Scott and Sue-Ellen Welfonder. I am a huge fan of Tarah Scott's books, so when I found out she was co-writing this series with Sue-Ellen Welfonder, I became curious and decided to give this book a go. I am glad I did because I loved it!

Cailean Ross is a modern day professor who also happens to be a world champion swordsman. I wasn't sure if I liked him at first as he came across as conceited and a little full of himself. However, as the story progressed I began to like him more. He has the soul of a warrior. When he finds himself mysteriously sent back in time during a reenactment in the Scottish village of Heatheredge, he is torn between finding a way home and staying with the woman he has come to love.

Julianna Mackay is a wonderfully strong female character. In a time of male dominance, she fights every day for her independence. She is incredibly strong willed and determined. When she literally runs into the broad chest of Cailean Ross after fleeing for her life, she never expected to have any feelings towards him. But as danger threatens to tear them apart, she can no longer deny her attraction.

I don't read many historical time-travel romances. However, I just had to read this one. Unfortunately, due to budget constraints, I was unable to purchase a copy. Instead, thanks to Prime, I was able to borrow this book through the lending library. As soon as I had downloaded it, I began reading. I was quickly swept up in the tale, which is told through the eyes of both Cailean and Julianna and gives the reader an insight into their thoughts and feelings. I have never been to a medieval reenactment, so was intrigued by how the village of Heatheredge prepared for the event by placing false fascias over the modern looking buildings and shops.

This story took me on a huge adventure into the past, with danger following not far behind. I must admit that I liked meeting a few of the other characters too, though one or two not so much. I liked Lennox, Julianna's brother. He too is a warrior and a kind and just man. However, I took an instant dislike to Val Ross and another character called Crowe. As the story unfolded I found myself holding my breath in places and sitting on the edge of the seat in others. There are kidnappings, sword fights and a mystery surrounding how or why Cailean was transported back in time. The romance between Cailean and Julianna is touching at times. I must admit that, having read a few of Tarah Scott's more racier books, I was expecting a little more in the way of heat between the two. I'm not saying that those scenes were not devoid of heat, only a little more subdued than I had expected though no less explicit. Other readers may not have the same response. Nevertheless, I enjoyed watching their relationship grow. Cailean's character also grows throughout the story and I enjoyed watching him settle into the 14th Century as if putting on a glove. He truly is an old soul. The description of both the present and the past were vividly written and I felt like I was actually there, standing next to Cailean or Julianna and seeing exactly what they saw. In fact, I became so emersed that I forgot I was even in modern day England and not 1395. It was a little jarring to the senses when I finished the story, let me tell you!

The story does end on a small cliffhanger, but this only left me itching to get my hands on the second book, which is told through the eyes of Lennox and Ginny (Cailean's sister) to see what happens next.

Tarah Scott and Sue-Ellen Welfonder have written a fantastic historical time travel romance. I love their writing style which is fast paced and entertaining, and the flow is wonderful too. Since Tarah Scott is already one of my favourite authors, I will have to add Sue-Ellen Welfonder onto my list too. I am looking forward to reading more of both authors' books in the future.

Due to scenes of a sexual nature that are rather on the explicit side and some bad language, I do not recommend this book to readers under the age of 16. I do, however, highly recommend this book if you love historical, time travel or contemporary romances. - Lynn Worton

This book with it's historical premise had me enchanted from the start.
I still want to do a bit more research regarding the specific events discussed here but the info supplied was enough to get me interested.

This book was written by two author but reading it you would never be able to tell that. It is fluid, engaging and the main protagonists, likeable and well enough developed to get me to start rooting for them from the start.

Oh and the evil bloke....he is a real bad guy, the type you love to hate but.... is there more to him than is on the surface?

A very good romance with enough real plot to make non romance readers like me like reading this book.

A fascinating role reversal!

Almost always in time-travel or alternate-universe romances it's the heroine who goes back in time or gets thrown into a different dimension (Outlander being the most famous example). Usually, the heroine has to use her ingenuity to get by and the hero falls in love with her after she demonstrates some amazing modern skill (again, see Outlander).

This story is a really interesting take on that where this time, it's the man who gets sent back in time. Fortunately, he's a champion medieval re-enactor, which comes in handy when he manages to get himself into a whole bunch of lethal situations in the first few days of his stumble into 14th century Scotland.

I thoroughly enjoyed this story. Perhaps the only bone I had to pick with it is that Julianna and the rest of her family, along with everyone else, would have been speaking Gaelic and not English as the book suggests. Cailean, being Scottish himself, could very well speak just enough of the language to get by, but misunderstandings could have been introduced by the language barrier which would have added another layer of intrigue to the story.

That small quibble aside, I was absolutely fascinated and I'll definitely be looking for the next in the series!

How does one handle when your tomorrows become yesterday?

Do you panic? Do you doubt? Or do you go with the flow? Our hero did all, but one thing we learned from the very beginning, he is a survivor! In the progression of this story the authors introduced us to knights of the Scottish realm, hair-raising adventures, and magic as performed by an evil wizard! I am left clambering for more! Please don't have me waiting for more in the tale!!!

Be careful what you wish for, because you just might get it. Who hasn’t heard that saying a hundred times? It’s a known fact that what you may think you want isn’t always all it’s cracked up to be. For Cailean Ross his love of medieval fairs and swordplay are about to become more than just a tad bit real.

Cailean Ross is a champion swordsman and jouster who spends his free time traveling to and participating in medieval reenactments and fairs. The pinnacle of his hobby takes place in the village of Heatheredge in the Scottish Highlands where the ultimate reenactment known simply as the Gathering takes place. After dreaming of attending and participating in the Gathering since he was a boy Cailean finally receives his wish and is able to attend. Very quickly he’s singled out as the best of the best swordsman out of all the attendees and the perks begin presenting themselves drawing him farther and farther into the thrall the medieval village seems to pulling him into. Unfortunately, the host of the Gathering forgot to mention that the most profound of all the perks he was receiving was the fact that he was about to be thrust back in time hundreds of years and live the life he’d dreamed about his whole life for real.

Of course, as any modern mostly rational male Cailean doesn’t fully understand what has happened for days assuming the entire ordeal he’s suddenly thrust into is an elaborate playact produced by the modern day Heatheredge residents. Gradually, he becomes to realize that what is happening is no mere play and the woman he is beginning to fall for is in fact the real Lady Julianna Mackay from the history books and not just a fellow actor. Relationships tend to become rather complicated when the person you’re interested in happens to predate your birth by six hundred years or so and you are torn between wanting to be home where there are cellphones, your family, and electric heaters and living the life you always imagined with the person you are falling for and the experience is no different for Cailean Ross.

I have to say that for me the story was a bit a slow at the onset and mildly confusing at times, but the premix was fantastic. I can’t really relate it to Outlander, because really while they’re both fruit of the romance variety we really are looking at apples and oranges in the plot lines apart from the fact that we’re knee deep in Scottish history and traveling through time. I really enjoyed some of the characters, Julianna especially; I love strong female characters and she was no exception (Given that she and I share nearly identical names I would have been horridly upset if she’d turned out to be a wispy piece of fluff with no backbone).

The history being strung throughout the novel was excellent. I’m a huge history buff and I felt that the depiction of so many pieces of the book were so spot on, realistic and thought provoking that it made me enjoy the book at the more. It was a great depiction of the time period something I’m very appreciative of and a bit of a snob about to be honest.

Some parts of the book, the description in particular were a bit drawn out and made me skip a head a couple times. I was a bit annoyed with a few of the things the characters did throughout the book; abandoning Kristen, Julianna’s complete change of heart over Sir Lawren, and Cailean’s several lies to various people. That and the fact that the book ended on a cliffhanger of sorts for the next set of characters made me demote the book from a four star to a three. Over all though, I enjoyed the book and will be looking out for book two.

'Edge of Yesterday' by Tarah Scott is book one in the " Edge' Series. This is the story of Cailean Ross and Julianna Mackay. This has time travel, a mystery and a very good love story. For me it has everything I enjoy in a romance. It was definitely one book you couldn't not put down and wanted to see what happens next. I thought also Cailean and Julianna were good main characters. There is a cliffhanger of sorts to set you up for the next book....which I can't wait to read!

I don't normally read historical or even time travel stories, but with the two combined here, this one intrigued me...I'm glad I read it. The role reversal of the normal in historical romances was refreshing...the time travel also handled differently than has been the norm was captivating. An overall enjoyable story that transports the reader through time to where you can loose yourself in another time and place.

Modern day Highlander's trip in time

Cailean finds himself thrust back in time to medieval times when as part of a reenactment of the past goes a bit too far. Lucky for the twenty-first century Highlander he has one of the best sword arms seen in the future and the past as he is soon called upon to live or die by the sword. As fate would have it the lovely Juliann is the recipient of his multiple acts of bravery as their story and journey to love unfolds.

the ending does a nice job of setting up the next book in the series but leaves the reader hanging.

My Thoughts:

Two of my favorite authors have collaborated in writing this all consuming beginning of this new time travel series.
It really grabbed the interest of this reader. The only thing I didn't like was the cliffhanger ending. Now I have to wait to discover what happens next.

I could not put it down and finished it in a 24 hour period.

I would give this beginning of this new series 4.75 of 5 stars for characterization and storyline and 4 of 5flames for heat. Once the hero and heroine come together the sparks really fly.

I received a complimentary digital ARC of this book from the publisher via NetGalley to read and review. This in no way affected my opinion of this book.

Edge of Yesterday by Tarah Scott and Sue-Ellen Welfonder is a magical Time Travel and more. Book 1 in the new and thrilling "Edge" series. Set against the back drop of Scotland’s Highland Heatheredge, where magic and time are relevant.
Men are disappearing from a small village, with no bodies, or signs of violence, how can foul play be involved?

This is Cailean Ross, a world champion swordsman and Julianna Mackay, who flees a man she fears is an evil wizard's tale.

The plot flows seamlessly. The characters are engaging, captivating, and well matched. The story is fast paced and masterfully written.
These authors are two of my favorite authors. They pull readers into their stories and holds captivated. I couldn’t put "Edge of Yesterday" down, it was so thrilling.

In, "Edge of Yesterday", readers will find suspense, mystery, intrigue, danger, a wicked wizard, a six hundred year old Scottish curse, and a romance that crosses time, itself. Everything a Romance and Time Travel fan could possibly wish in a great story. Plus a set on the edge of your seat plot! What a tangle of excitement!
WOW! I can't wait to read the next installment. There story has somewhat of a cliffhanger, leading readers into Book 2, but this book has a satisfying ending. A must read by Tarah Scott and Sue-Ellen Welfonder! Great job, ladies! I highly recommend reading "Edge of Yesterday", you will not go wrong!

Cailean Ross has waited years, and perfected his craft to be invited to the best tournament in Scotland. It is just as good as he always hoped it would be. Now he intends to be the champion. He doesn't know just how realistic everything will be.
Lad Juliana Grray witnesses something she shouldn't. That puts her in grave danger from a very evil man.
This is an absolutely marvellous time travel story, with lots of adventure. The whole story is one you just want to jump into and join the fun, until you find out how dangerous it can be. Our by hero is fabulous . Our heroine is so much trouble but lovable. This is a nice big book with plenty to get your teeth into . This is the first part of a two part story, Our lead characters still have a big problem to solve but another one turns up at the end of the book. Now I desperately need the next part.

"Edge of Yesterday" is a collaboration between Sue-Ellen Welfonder and Tarah Scott that is so much fun to read. Cailean Ross is visiting Heatheredge's medieval village and competing in the contests. He is impressed by the village and how it transforms into a medieval village almost over night. He loves it.
During a historical reenactment, Cailean finds himself smack dab in 14th century Scotland. When Heatheredge village WAS a medieval village. He quickly meets and helps save Julianna from a suspicious group. Cailean learns that what he was taught were historical events, may not actually be true.
Julianna is a young, childless widow who is at turns intrigued and confused by Cailean. He speaks oddly, and seems to "know" things that he shouldn't. He is also mixed up about the village's history. But, he is handsome, kind and she is falling in love with him.
Great story with lots of passion and feeling between Cailean and Julianna. There was a lot of background information about the village, the historical events that took place there and the games before Cailean is sent back in time. With all of this background info. the story is a little slow in the beginning, but it quickly picks up steam once Cailean and Julianna meet. I can't wait to read the next book about Cailean's sister Ginny and Julianna's brother Lennox. Highly recommended.

Received an ARC copy for an honest review.

Time travel novels have always been some of my all time favorites. I've read quite a few novels where women have gone back in time, fell in love with a knight or a prince, and lived happily ever after. This, however, was an extraordinary change. We instead find a man Cailean Ross, who is a champion swordsman, thrust back into a magical medieval Scotland. Men are disappearing but no one knows where they've gone or why it's happening and he's fallen right into the middle of it.

The only two things that held me back from 100% adoring this book are:
1. I felt him being a champion swordsmen and a part of medieval reenactments made him seem a little too good to be true for a story like this. I always find it more appealing when the person who has time traveled has next to no idea how to fit in. Though his confusion in the beginning, believing it to be an elaborate trick, is cute and amusing. However, Cailean is a genuinely great character and his personality was fantastic.
2. The descriptions were a bit too drawn out form time to time. I found myself not wanting to read full scenes and had to hold myself back from skipping ahead.

I really, overall, loved this take on medieval Scotland, magic, evil, and love.

I received a free copy of this novel from the publishers via Netgalley in return for an honest review.

This is an engaging historical romance which will interest readers of historical fiction, mysteries and romance. Cailean Ross is a 21st century champion mediaeval tournament fighter who finds himself in 14th century Scotland. Understandably, it takes him a while to realise what has happened, and during that time he has the opportunity to fall in love as well as make a name for himself, while figuring out what on earth is going on.

The mystery is plausible and engaging, the romance is believable and not too over the top, and if you love sword fighting, you'll be happy with the many and detailed descriptions of Cailean's battles.

The only thing I'm not happy about with this book is the cliffhanger ending. Cliffhangers are mean and they force people to buy another book in order to find out what happened. It's great marketing, but not a nice way to treat your readers, in my opinion. This novel ends abruptly and leaves the reader with a feeling of having had the rug yanked out from under them, just as things were getting good. Authors need to be careful doing this as it may leave the reader feeling disinclined to purchase the next book because they feel they've been led up the garden path with the first one.

I loved this world. I loved the charm, the struggle's and how evil and still half unexplained the reason for the evil character is. I can guess but I am sure I would be guessing wrong.

I really loved this book and for once in a romance I needed to pay attention. I loved that as well.

I can really recommend this book.

Champion swordsman Cailean Ross is attending reenactment of a lifetime of Heatheredge’s medieval reenactment of the Gathering. His fantasy soon turns into reality when he’s taken back 600 years in time and he comes to the rescue and saves Julianna Mackay who’s fleeing a man she fears is an evil wizard. He soon realizes he has to fight to the death in order to survive. People have been disappearing in both worlds and Cailean finds himself among the ‘missing’ statistics. He knows if he ever wants to return home he must solve the mystery, try not to change history and not fall in love along the way with a beautiful Highland widow. A wonderful time travel with magic and a lovely romance.

It has been a long while since I have read a good Scottish historical romance. This one was even better because of the time travel involved. Found it very hard to put this book down, it was so exciting. The writing was excellent and the content was brilliant. I loved Julianna and Lennox and Cailean is to die for. Bing a time travel book, there are many twists and turns and trying to figure them out just makes this book more exciting. I very much look forward to book two , Edge of Today. I couldn’t stop reading, I could not put it down, the whole time I was in suspense waiting to see what happens next, loved the buildup, the story is amazing. The characters mesh well, loved the interactions between Cailean and Julianna. Made me laugh thought how long it took Cailean to realize he was not in his time anymore, it created quite a few interesting moments for him. The ending was surprising… a good one, I promise

Wow ! Wow and just Wow. This is the best book ever. You can't put it down. You think of these wonderful characters all day. It is so historically correct. You are in 14 th century Scotland. Sue-Ellen and Tarah have out done themselves. I almost cried at the end. Because I didn't want to stop reading about Julianna, Cailean and Lennox. I very very highly recommend this book !!!

A must read!

Wow a true page turner. I was so disappointed when I read the last page and that was the end.
This is a fantastic time travel book. There is suspense, intrigue and hold your breath adventure in every page. Plus a fair amount of HEA that leaves you hanging.
I am anxiously awaiting the next book in the series, it can't come soon enough for me.

it was very slow moving at first and finally picked up over halfway through. Lennox was my favorite. Cailean is very likeable and Julianne is everything a highland lass should be. decent action. can't say I'm a big fan of cliffhangers though.

What happens when two historical scottish writers collaborate on a time travel series ? Books that the reader can not put down. Settle into a comfortable chair with snacks because you won't want to move until the last page is turned.

Received authors copy. Opinions are entirely my own.
