The Sixgun Solution

Rate this book
Tombstone Time Warp!

The year is 1881, and the most famous gunfight in history is about to take place at the O.K. Corral. But the Earps and the Clantons are not the only rival factions converging in the Wild West town of Tombstone, Arizona.

The Time Commandos are sent back to the American frontier to investigate the disappearance of three missing agents, only to come up against an organized crime empire from the future, saboteurs from a parallel universe, genetically engineered spies, and lethal cross-time terrorists.

To make matters even worse, two parallel timelines have started to converge in the exact same time and place, causing reality to ripple, threatening to overwhelm the timestream, and make history take a radical shift into the surreal….

All good things come to an end and this series ended more than 25 years ago. What started as an interesting sci-fi fantasy with literary ties morphed into one with semi-historical and then more historical than "semi-" for this final entry. Hawke did a pretty good job weaving temporal paradox into his stories, but he wove a doozy with this one...no spoilers but criss-crossing overlaps with five major player groups ... well done. His personal interest in projectile weapons and the history of Tombstone in 1881 are quite apparent.

Setting aside the series for another ten years or so...

I have finally finished the loooong odyssey. Long only because I never saw the last few books, in my local store, back when the series was originally released. And, being poor, I could not afford the astronomical prices to get a second hand paperback. And the final kicker that I enjoy ebooks far less... and I just never managed to read this last book.

One of my favourites in the series. Along with The Dracula Caper and The Argonaut Affair. So the books where the Temporal Agents fight vampires and werewolves (or, at least, genetically created facsimiles), the monsters and gods that Odysseus encountered, and finally, the Gunfight Near the OK Corral. My childhood fantasies are fulfilled.

A satisfyingly complex and consistently entertaining foray. And I'm glad that temporal paradox played a more major role than ever, before. Fitting, for the final installment.

Was it a good final? Well, it definitely wraps up one of the long-running subplots, so I guess it serves the function. But... to be honest, enjoying this last book only makes me wish there were going to be more... but Simon has already stated that he has decided to move on, to other books. Ah, well...

If you enjoyed the other books, you'll enjoy this one. But honestly, they're not standalones, even though each novel has a plot which is resolved. So I'd suggest starting at the beginning, if you haven't, already.

These series of books are an easy read .The author seems at times trite and over simplistic. But enjoyable just the same. I think the idea of using characters and authors of classic adventure stories is a big plus

I love the Time Wars series, but this one had way too many characters to keep track of. I did like the relationship between Jenny and Scott. I did not like the profanity. There was none of that in previous books of the series, so why was it thrown in this one?

Ok I think this is probably one of the longer series of books I have read in recent times and I must admit there is a hollow feeling knowing that I have come to the end of the series - but I will admit that it has been a roller coaster ride on not only ups and downs but also break neck speeds and thrills. The story itself - or temporal disruption is based around the O K Coral and the events leading up to it. but there is also more - we are seeing the convergence of the time streams and plots to separate (and end) the competing time lines once and for all and as such you cannot ask for a better conclusion to the series. I have enjoyed each and every book - they all have their own merits and strengths - so better than others but each was fun to read and I do not doubt I will be reading them again in the future some day.

You know that hollow, dead feeling you get when you finish a series and there's no more?
...I have that feeling. When that last page flipped and I knew I would never hear from Finn, Lucas, and Andre again, I felt weird. Granted, I know what happens to them, and that's fine by me...there just aren't any more.

But now for the actual book. Usually, I don't read Westerns. I don't watch Westerns. But I'll read a book about a temporal disruption that just so happens to take place in the Old West. It gives a different twist on the shootout at the OK Corral with the characters I've grown to love.
It has humor, it has action, it has romance. What more could you want?

The epic conclusion, indeed.

This was such a well realized series (and far better than Hawke's Wizard series) that I always wondered if he could work out the rights with the publisher to continue it (self published, or with a new publisher). I don't recall this particular book being one of the better ones (I'm a bit fuzzy on it I admit), but the early ones in particular were so great.
