Hey. I'm John Rals, the guy who has everything. Okay, so maybe I don't have the immortality or superhuman abilities of a brooding teenage vampire, but I make a fortune playing one on TV. I've got a hot rocker boyfriend, all the kids who bullied me in high school wish they were me, and if my award collection gets any bigger, I'm gonna need a bigger penthouse. So you tell me, how did a stack of fan letters from some kid in rural Maine become my most treasured possessions?
Oh, right. Because I'm not John Rals, I'm just a sidenote on his IMDB page. An obscure figment of some writer's imagination catapulted into a moment of relevance because the guy who once played him on TV was in the wrong place at the wrong time, got shot and woke up thinking he's a character no one even remembers.
No one except for Aiden. John has ignored his letters for years, but they're the only thing that makes me feel real. I have to find him, but convincing him I'm not the asshole he thinks I am isn't going to be easy.
Warning: This book contains mature m/m sexual content and themes of past abuse. HEA with NO cheating!
I may not be a big fan of M/M romances, but I absolutely LOVED this premise of a story.
The author did a great job of developing these characters and making us fall in love with them. The way he wove the story of John/Carter was breathtaking and I couldn't wait to read more to find out how this was going to play out.
This is definitely a book that will remain in my heart!
I am becoming obsessed with LC Davis!!!!! This was another great story with genuine feelings and great in depth writing. I received my copy thru instafreebie so I don't know if the editing errors are because of that or this just didn't get a 2nd read thru before the "publish" button was hit. As much as the errors aggravated me, and they did OMG!, I was still enthralled with this story.
It's almost a Cinderella story about someday my prince will come. Aiden is like the everyday man who has his struggles and identifies with a character he sees on TV. That character helped him cope with his life and he sent fan mail to the star expressing his thoughts and feelings, telling him about his life and how the character, Carter, really helped him. Aiden isn't crazy or stalkerish, he fully realizes the silliness of writing fan mail and says so in his letters. It was sweet. When John, aka Carter, reads those fan letters (after he is shot from a mugging and suffers from dissociative identity disorder - he think's he's Carter), he feels a connection to Aiden, and decides to go see Aiden in person.
As bizarre and unbelievable as that all is, I totally bought it and didn't want to stop. Let me tell you I was frustrated when I had to stop reading because I had finally arrived at work. It was right at the moment when John/Carter arrives at Aiden's garage and they see each other!! I pulled out my kindle during lunch to finish that scene and a little more. ;)
This was sweet but also deep with real emotions and real problems. *warning*
I give this 4 stars because the premise is a little far out there (celebrity finds a fan because of their mail, have sex that first night and they fall in love and live HEA), and I wanted to get a little more on page time of them as a full couple. What can I say? Never satisfied. ;)
I thought it would be as straight forward as the blurb. Happy it was more nuanced in the beginning then the accident occurred.
Then things quickly unraveled from both the storytelling front and the "believability" front.
What happened was so out of the realm of possibilities after the idea's letters were read by John that I was dumb struck. I don't pretend to be a connoisseur of all things celebrity but how John approaches Aiden and how that whole thing unfolded made me facepalm. And it was all going so well before then too. Sigh.
I honestly almost DNF'd this but I got the book as a free and felt I at least had to finish on principle.
I'm a bit happy I continued because things improved marginally on the story front and ended up pretty okay.
Very enjoyable, but I needed that month those two spent together more fleshed out, in order to connect to them and belive in their HEA. Interesting premise anyway and likeable MCs.
I liked the idea of an asshole actor waking up after an accident, thinking he's one of the best characters he'd played on TV and wanting to redeem himself, make it up to his disappointed fans. Fix things. And some bits were interesting enough that I kept reading.
Eventually, I started skimming though, because the guys weren’t all that likable— the better word choice might be: charming.
Yeah, the whole book lacked a certain charm for me and sadly I lost interest before hitting 50%.
I did read until the two MC met for the first time, hoping it would get fun (I’m a sucker for first time meetings) but it was nothing I’d wanted it to be.
Also, they fall into bed almost instantly and while that isn’t always a bad thing, it certainly wasn’t what I’d hoped it to be.
This was a very nice freebie I got for subscribing to the author's newsletters. I didn't really think anything about it because it was short and it's hard to develop anything deep in such a short time. But was very surprised to find it very emotional. I really liked the trope with Dissociative identity disorder and the way it was written in the narrative. Anyways, I like this author more and more.
Strange book. Serious issues about trauma, mixed with amnesia, and incorrectly labelled diagnoses.
John/Carter struggles with his memory after he's shot by a mugger. Aiden relates to Carter, and doesn't face his own troubled life in its current state.
I like Ben the best, everyone else seems less solid, Ben is a straight up guy who functions in reality.
The story is OK, but the psychology is only partly correct, the subject matter too deep for what I expected to be a light read.
I received a free copy of this on instafreebie, and this has to be one of my best decisions. I decided to give this a shot. Within a few pages time, I was pulled in through the eyes of John Rals. An actor, who currently played as a broody vampire on a TV show.
John just about had it all, or so it seemed. His parents and brother estranged. A rock star boyfriend who was all wrong for him. Have I mentioned he out of the closet? Well now you know. From what I could tell from the first 2 chapters, he was a likable character. Easy to understand from my point of view.
One evening, John gets into a fight with his boyfriend. He ends up at the wrong place, at the wrong time. A mugging gone wrong. Only to wake up and, let's just say he's not himself. He thinks he's someone else, a character he played as back in a previous show called Mine & Yours. A show that was ultimately canceled after 3 seasons.
Here is where Aiden comes in. Aiden was a fan of the show since he was a teenager. John was playing as a character, Carter, and Aiden kinda latched on to that character best. They had a lot in common. He even wrote letters to John, but those were never read.
Until one day, John AKA Carter, had nothing better to do with himself, came across a letter. Which led to reading whole boxes filled with other letters left unread. It was Aidens letters that stood out the most, and a love story began.
I won't go into detail here, that would be cheating! But I will say this story was excellent without getting too fluffy with romance. Not saying thats a bad thing per se. It just felt realistic, and not the kind of carbon copy romances that have become common in todays society. I found it unique and refreshing. There were times I sat down with the intent to read a chapter or two, only to end up reading 10 in a row. Because that was how addicting it was for me. The end of each chapter just kept me wanting more.
There’s nothing about this story I don’t love. Aiden and John are two very broken and imperfect characters that just fit.
I haven’t read a lot of books with an amnesia trope, and this isn’t precisely that, but the way the story is crafted in the aftermath of John waking up in the hospital is brilliantly done.
It was heartbreaking to watch as John tried to understand what his life was before, what is was in the moment, and how he wanted things to be in the future. It was also an extraordinary example of strength and determination.
When Aiden enters the picture, he too is a broken man. In spite of that, the two of them just fit. The majority of the character growth is focused on John with good reason, but Aiden is faced with truths that help him grow into the man he needs to be in order to achieve his happy ending.
I generally speak in vagaries so that the characters can tell their stories themselves. That is most definitely the case with this story. There are some very heavy topics that are mentioned directly and indirectly, so this book isn’t for everyone. If you don’t have triggers related to off page suicide of a character not in the book, mentions of past SA, or mental illness centered around D.I.D., then you should read their story for yourself.
To my ratings: A 3,5* is clicked with a 4* but in review marked as 3,5*:
5* - very very good and rare (it would be a Blow-Away-book like ‘Jesse's Smile’ or ‘Joey’ from Angelique Jurd, ‘Save the the kids’ series from EM Leya, ‘Love’s Tethered Heart’ from C.L. Etta or ‘Liberty’ from Seth King), it's like an A+
4* - very good and will be often reread and is a WOW-book with interesting plot and surprises (like most of Andrew Grey books and Davidson Kings 'Haven Hart'-series) it's like an A
3,5* - a really good book, which will be reread a few times (most romances where you can enjoy for relaxing and during waiting times in hospitals). I can recommend them definitively! It's like an B+
3* - it could be more then a one-time-reader (2-3 times a year), it's like a B
2* - it was ok to read, but it's more a one-time-reader (I wouldn't recommend it heartily, but it was ok) It's like a C-, D
1* - sorry, but that isn't really a book for me (too many mistakes, not nice plot, illogical, so an absolute NO-GO). It's like failure in the whole line, dismissed, repeat the class
The author was new to me. I was pleasantly surprised by this short story. This story just proves you never know where you'll find love.
John Rals was an actor bored his new role as a vampire. He is attending an awards with his boyfriend and he gets the award for his role as portraying the vampire. After the awards show John and his boyfriend get in a big argument and the boyfriend throws John out of the house. In a robbery gone bad, John is shot and loses his memory. He thinks he is a character named Carter from his first role as an actor.
He tries to get his memory back by reading his fan mail to see if it sparks any recollection of the man who he is today. Aiden is a fan who has been writing to John over the years. He really connects to John as Carter, because they share some similar life events.
John decides to go visit Aiden because he just connects to Aiden. Aiden is flabbergasted to see his favorite actor in his small hometown. Aiden is a little hesitant to believe John is just wants connect to his fans because he hasn't answered a single fan letter.
Will Aiden let John in when he is at his lowest point? Will John be able to confront his demons to get beyond the past and be with the man he loves? Love, betrayal and heartbreak describes this story.
The universe served me a "Killing me softly" moment with Fan Mail, and I loved it! In fact, I got it free for joining Joel's newsletter, but I promptly went to Amazon and bought a copy to support the author. The sex (MM) is plentiful for a short book with a variety of couples. It's really a sweet romance. Note, anyone with sexual trauma should check the content warnings and my list below because this little gem covers very heavy issues but in an honest, thoughtful way. The bad: some typos & factual errors, the beginning is a bit rough, some cardboard characters, etc. There are other issues but other reviewers have covered them in detail. I would love to see this developed in a thick, juicy book length where all the issues raised by reviewers are addressed. Somehow, the author channeled my story and that may be why I loved it so, but I have to 100% recommend it.
》 HERE THERE BE SPOILERS 《 Themes we encounter: Suicides (off page & in the past) Rape, incest, and child sexual abuse (off page & in the past) Addiction Mental illness Street violence (yay) BIPOC & Native Americans
This was amazing. The characters were so real and believable it kept me on the edge of my seat throughout the storyline. A roller coaster of emotions were expressed for both characters. Seeing both sides of the coin of a fan of a fictional character (that he related to on a personal level) and of the actor portraying a fictional character (using his real life experiences to flesh out and write the character) made for a truly interesting story. The portrayal of a real mental illness, a course of treatment and self discovery keeps the story believable and in perspective. Personally I have always wondered if actors suffered from the dissociative disorder illness portrayed in the story. So for me this makes this story all the more real. All together this is a wonderful read for any lover of the male/male romance genre.
This was a moving story that was more than hot insta-wet moments and circumstances. This is a touching story that deals with some delicate issues that are important and beautifully written. John is a lead actor at the top of his career. He's on a number one show, dating an obnoxious rock star and the fans love him. Aiden is an auto mechanic, in a failing garage, in a very small town. These two meet because of some very old fan mail Aiden had sent to John. John was recovering after being shot. During his recovery, unexpected problems that had to be kept private, led him to his fan mail. The relationship between these two was touching, I thought this story was beautifully written. I enjoyed this story very much. I HIGHLY, HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK!!!!!
3.5 stars, rounded up for touching a nerve and getting it right.
This was a much heavier read than I'd expected, but a very enthralling one. The premise is a touch out there, but I felt the author sold it well, and the reveal was so heartbreakingly real that I'm rating this more generously than I otherwise would have, considering some parts might have been a bit more fleshed out. That usually bothers me, but wow, what the author got right was just amazing.
As others have noted, the Instafreebie version wasn't formatted well, and another pass of editing (both line edits and some developmental issues) would've improved the story. Flaws notwithstanding, it's very much worth the read if you can forgive the wonky formatting.
I really enjoy this authors work and was looking forward to reading this book and happily I wasn't disappointed.
The story is about famous actor John Rals who after being shot loses his memory and becomes a character from one of his first television series. After reading some fan mail he stumbles on a series of letters by a boy named Aiden Goodleaf who is a big fan of John's on-screen character Carter. Determined to meet him John sets out to find Aiden and when they finally meet John realises what his life has been missing and that's Aiden. Recommended
I was intrigued by the premise of Fan Mail by L.C. Davis. A story told by a character the actor John played several years in the past was unique in my years of reading. The reader sees John’s personality shift slightly after his accident, such that his reading old fan letters does not seem unbelievable. The letters from Aiden are intelligent and honest and capture John’s attention. The story told from alternating points of view allows for insights into both MCs, so the letters have a backstory that enhances the plot. Without any spoilers, the story made the unusual totally believable and fascinating. This is the first book I’ve read by the author, but another is on my TBR list.
Aside from one or two consistency issues, this was an interesting story dealing with celebrity, Dissociative Identity Disorder, and finding one's true self in the aftermath of trauma. It's a bit convoluted at times but I liked the characters enough to continue reading and rooting for them and the story was compelling enough to keep my attention. However, the copy I read (which I received through Instafreebie) needed another copy-editing pass and a few formatting fixes.
This was a really good book. I read it in one sitting. I have not read a book by this author before. The ups and downs of the main characters story could be the same for anyone. Not the hit it and quit it you get with some books but not the sickly sweet romance either. Just the right amount of arrogance, angst, self discovery and sex. I’m looking forward to reading more from this author soon. I would like to rate this on Amazon but it will not let me.
A bit slow at first in getting not this book but then I could hardly put it down. Loved the way to rather easy to dislike celeb was humanised and though you kind of knew there would be a HEA the way the author linked his salvation was masterful. Carter / John got to like both of them. Aiden equally a good character. Ben - what about burns story? The ending , I don't know why I felt was a bit of a let down for me. I don't know but could have been more.....
I found this book a very enjoyable read. I have many books by LC Davis and this is another beautifully written piece. The characters were well developed. I kept wondering how these two men who are in love could possibly work things out for themselves when John was such a mess. No worries, they find the HEA.
Had heartwarming/poignant moments, some distracting typos (like a few name mixups) but overall a bit touching. Cheesy at times but aware for the cheesiness, and the style was effective too. I didn’t much like the short story I read under this author’s other name/pen name, but this was better by far.
When I read these short stories that I got for free I very rarely love them enough to give them 5 stars. This one however was way better than I expected. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who loves good MM books. It's a short but very satisfying story....
I did like this book however I just felt there was something missing. maybe it was to short? Or perhaps would have worked better exploring the characters personalities deeper? Would I recommend a read yeah, is it something I will read again probably not.
OK, so, looks like I've read this but never added it to GR, something I've seemed to do a while ago. I remember it's a great and passionate tale but the read date is pure guess work so I'm going to put todays date, the day I re-read it and still loved it. An amazing tale.
