Mike's life was shattered by the Sh'raithe. Mike slowly awakened, battered, bruised, and broken. Mike’s eyes slowly focused as he looked around. He was naked, in a rusting, banded iron cage. Dim light trickled through open windows in the wide, cylindrical shaft. Dust motes swam in the wane light which grew fainter as it approached Mike’s cage, barely disturbing the gloom. As Mike took in his new surroundings, he realized that he had only one thing left to live for, and that was to seek vengeance for the people that he'd lost. He didn't know how he was going to get out of this cage, but he knew, if it was the last thing he did in his life, he would kill every last one of them.
I agree with the suggestion that this series should be read from the beginning. Discussion of Desolate Tides can only take place if it's viewed as a series, not a stand-alone novel. It's an episodic story, like a TV series. Read them all. I'll wait here until you get back.
We know these characters from books 1-4 of the Earth Exiles series. The basic conflicts, the good guys, the bad guys - we know that from what came before.
That said, I liked this book more than Book 4. There was more about Om in it. I've been hoping to see him ally with the good guys since we met him.
We found out about two new worlds in this one: Earth's moon, and Mars. They both give Harritt more room to expand the story of future humanity.
We saw a lot of internal bickering by the native humans this episode.
The good guys still have 3 mechs.
There are several teaser / cliffhanger story threads, related to Mickey and Mike (two of the main characters). I won't spoil them for you, but they're important because they promise that we'll see more adventures for them in the future.
One thing I found interesting in this book was not part of the story. It was the author's bio at the end. It no longer says that Mark Harritt is driving a truck. It says he's in Afghanistan as a contractor. Safe travels to you either way, Mark! Please hurry back and tell us more about our friends in your world.
If you have any interest in science fiction, I strongly recommended reading this series. It is really well written. Furthermore, it presents numerous sci-fi concepts, from artificial intelligence to extraterrestrial life, with both a refreshingly new perspective and in a manner that makes one nostalgic for the past.
For a full taste of this adventure it would be good to start at book 1. The robot mechs have that somehow evolved sentience do arrive as Calvary. The handprint on the window a Mystery. Curious?
This is a very good series. The characters are very well d e fined and seem almost real. The story itself is awesome and very plausible. Can't wait for the next story in the series
