“I wake up in the middle of the night sometimes and see him standing at the foot of the bed, staring at me. Some nights I don’t think he sleeps at all.”
Ashley Preston has a problem. Her husband Nick has fallen victim to a mysterious illness, alternating between bizarre physical symptoms for which doctors cannot determine a cause and alarming personality changes which have Ashley fearing not just for Nick’s health but for her own safety as well. Desperate to save her husband, she turns to the only person she believes can help her: Damian Fuentes.
Ashley knows Damian’s family has dabbled in some kind of dark magic over the years. She also knows that when Nick was ten years old, Damian’s grandfather performed a strange ritual on him. Convinced that this ritual is at the root of her husband’s problem, Ashley begs Damian to delve into the Fuentes family’s darkest secrets in search of a cure. But Damian has spent the past five years trying to distance himself from his family and his traumatic past. Helping Ashley will mean resurrecting the long-dead ghosts of his most disturbing memories. If he saves Nick he may very well lose himself.
What would you do for a friend, especially when their nightmares should have been yours and your nightmares are too terrifying to ignore? Two couples bound by friendship and a dark past must move beyond their worst fears when one of them becomes entangled in the results of the hell they once shared.
PRIMOGENITO by Greta Cribbs is a tale of dark family secrets, torturous rituals, sacrifice and the scars of psychological and physical pain. It is the story of a father’s love, a son’s pain and love so strong that nothing is too great of a sacrifice to prevent evil from prevailing.
Damian, Jenn, Nick and Ashley must bridge the past to save their futures, while Leo takes a stand against the family he tried to leave behind long ago.
Greta Cribbs brings forth a tale of utter darkness and broken pasts as she tosses us headlong into the Fuentes family with their ancient secrets, the costs of those secrets, past, present and future if they are not stopped. She has created an atmosphere that can be cut with a knife, tension that soars and suspense that will keep readers on the edge of their seats.
Once again, the power of her writing is a force to be reckoned with as she takes us into an unimaginable world of violence and the ultimate greed. Strong writing, strong storytelling make this read one that is both haunting and enthralling, start to finish.

Holy Moly what a book!! I can honestly say I have never read a book that even compares to this one, but that doesn't surprise me because as I've said in previous reviews for her other books (which were blow me away awesome) this author has the most creative mind and she absolutely shatters me every time I read one of her stories.
I'm not even going to try to sum this book up, I wouldn't know where to start unless I just copy and paste her synopsis. I will say this though...The characters of Damian, Jenn, Ashley, Nick and Leo were written perfectly as well as the others but those five were just plain awesome. This hit on every one of my emotions, there were parts of the story I was scared, angry, like throw my kindle kind of angry, heartbroken, excited, happy, and sometimes confused, and the transition from one emotion to the next wasn't always easy. I literally read this book in one sitting because there was no way I could put it down, the twists were placed perfectly, and the writing style was perfect. It moved along quickly with no “fluff” thrown in along the way.
I love this author, she is an absolute genius. You just never know what her next book is going to bring and I think that's simply brilliant.
Ill admit that although Im so excited about what she thinks of next, I'm also a little scared to see what she thinks of next. LOL
Primogénito: A Fuentes Legacy by Greta Cribbs, is a thrilling drama filled story full of twists and turns. This story has so many elements to it, there is love, loyalty, sacrifice, betrayal, jealousy, dark magic, and pain, both physical and psychological. I was drawn into the the story right away. The four main characters are Ashley, Nick, Jenn and Damian, and they have a special bond because of something horrific that happened in their past. Ashley has come to ask Damien for help, because her husband is ill and the past hurts are now being brought back to light. As you read farther into this story you will learn more about the history of the Fuentes family, and some of what you will learn will be appalling. Damian is willing to do anything to help his friends and his family. Just when you think you know what's gonna happen there's another twist that you didn't see coming. Can Damian help his friends and family? This book will draw you in and keep you intrigued throughout the entire story. There were so many emotions I experienced while reading this book and for me those are the best stories!!! This is a must read!!
The book follows the Fuentes family legacy where Ashley's husband Nick has fallen sick to a rather mysterious illness. Nick is having bizarre symptoms and the doctors have no ideas. Fearing for her husbands wellbeing, Ashley turns to Damien Fuentes. Damien's family has dabbled in dark magic in the past, with Damien's grandfather performing a ritual on Nick. Nick's own wife, Jenn, is now also pregnant with their first daughter which is causing even more issues into Damien's past which he now must resurrect.
A large volume of books which I have recently been asked to review have fallen mostly into the sci-fi genre and this was a nice change from that. Although I am not huge on history, I do enjoy history with a dark twist and magic etc. That was what hook me on this book; all the finding out what was happening, the strange illness and the history of the Fuentes family. Those were also some of my favourite parts of the book. The characters in the story were also decent, but I wouldn't say I preferred one over the other. The writing was reasonable but easy to read and quite fast paced. There was plenty of detail with a mixture of plenty of dialogue too. The chapters were of a decent size too so you didn't spend too much time mixing between all the different characters/viewpoints but when they did switch, you didn't feel confused or left off at a random point. I did enjoy the ending, the realistic side of it and there is definitely quite a dark side to this story, especially when talking death and gore. I certainly enjoy books with this and felt like the writing worked well here.
Overall, an enjoyable read with some interesting points into the history of the Fuentes legacy and dark magic. I definitely think it would be really interesting to read more into the Fuentes family, origins or maybe even future works.
Oh boy... where to start with this book. This book is dark and twisted but also full of love and self sacrifice for friends. I liked how the author portrayed the relationship tangles between these friends. Due to some pretty tragic events some friends are scattered not as close as they once were. After several years they come back together to figure out why or what has one of them down amd sick and just acting weird. Really weird. Is the sickness connected to the past. They'll have to dig up some secrets and learn new things about each other. Will it be enough to cure or save their friend? You'll have to read it to find out.
Secrets don’t stay buried forever… I took a step out of my typical reading genera with this novel because I was looking to mix things up a bit for a change. Let me just say I was never for one moment disappointed with my decision! This was such a great read full of so many twists and turns, and moments that had me going what? I loved it. This starts off with a bit of a mystery surrounding a group of friends, well estranged friends that went through something traumatic together about six years prior to when the book takes up. There is Damian and his wife Jenn, and Ashley and her husband Nick. They all have a connection that ultimately centers around Damian’s family. “Though the four of them, Jenn, Damian, Ashely, and Nick would be forever held together in the bond created by their shared past, Jenn wasn’t sure if there was a word that could adequately describe that bond.” It is this traumatic experience that is circling back again and causing new issues in their lives and new turmoil that is pulling them back together. Not everyone is happy about it either. It stirs up jalousies and causes old wounds to be revisited just when things were seemingly settled. “This had to do with the secrets the Fuentes family had guarded down through the centuries. The secrets from which Aureliano Fuentes, called Leo, by everyone outside the family, had tried in vain to protect his son. But secrets don’t remain buried forever, and Damian had been the one to pay the price for his father’s actions.” Now a new terror is threatening the four of them and death is knocking on their doors as well. Will they be able to find a way to put an end to the Fuentes family magic once and for all? Or will the magic that has survived three hundred years so far be far too strong for these four mere mortals? This is definitely one that will keep you on the edge of you seat and second guessing yourself. Just when you think you have this figured out the author has you fooled. But those are the best books! This was my first read by Greta Cribbs and I can’t wait to find more of her work and sink into bed with another and get lost in it. If I could give it more than five stars I would. Definitely one of my top reads for the year! Well done!!
There are some stories that would make me cringe and wish I could stop reading, yet I am not able to. This story is one of them. I loved to hate it and would have given it five stars but then try as I might I cannot because of the negativity it exuded.
The plot is dark and revolves around a family and its traditions. There are rebels within such families as well. But for the who, what and how you need to read the story. Trust me when I say, it is not going to be easy.
Hats off to you Greta for penning a story so dark and unputdownable at the same time. It is not easy to narrate a gripping tale that can make the reader cringe and squirm but continue reading. Amazing use of language. The author has used words to bring out raw emotions without going over the top. Apart from that, there is a tone of formality throughout. It might put off some readers but I felt it was yet another writing technique used. Imageries existed in galore and I wish they didn't because it means at least two sleepless nights for me. The ending is mindblowing and the twist is a master stroke. But then, whether there is going to be a sequel is something I am wondering.
The characters are amazing as well. There are very few characters in this story. You can count them on your fingertips. Yet, I never felt anybody being a useless add on. Each of them controbuted to the story. The emotions that they deficted, the pain, abuse, rape, agony, trauma, everything was expressed by these characters.
To sum up, such stories are generally not my cup of tea because they bring in a lot of negative emotions. However, this story was gripping and kept me hooked to it. I had to finish it though I wanted to quit it at times since I felt awful. Again kudos to the author because it is easy to evoke positive emotions but to stir up negative emotions is a talent not every writer can pull off. The story is superb and tugs your heartstrings in ways you cannot imagine.
P.S - Thank you Greta for bringing in a story of the First Borns or Primogenito to me. This review is my honest opinion after reading the story. I truly hope there is a sequel.
Primogénito: The Fuentes Legacy By: Greta Cribbs 5 out of 5 stars
The story Primogénito: The Fuentes Legacy by Greta Cribbs is a thrilling/mystery book that includes the paranormal/supernatural. It is a story that had me hooked from the first chapter and I didn’t want to put it down until I had finished the final page. This book had me wondering what was going to happen next and what would happen to those caught up in the events that are described. It is a story about those who commit evil acts and how they will do anything to further their own agenda. You read of how far some would go to ensure their survival. It is also a story of friendship, love, and self-sacrifice. It all began one night years ago that left not only physical but phycological scars on a group of friends. Now one of them has become ill. Could there be a connection between this illness and that night so many years ago? An investigation into the history of one of the friends family and secrets that have been kept through the years is started. This investigation is filled with danger. Will diaries that are filled with one of these friend’s family’s history lead to a solution for this illness? Would this solution come with a cost to those who use it? This is a story that had me on the edge of my seat and quickly turning pages. I loved reading about the characters of Ashley and Damian. Damian is a man who has always felt guilt over what happened those many years ago. He is determined to find a solution to what is happening to his friend. Ashley has a personal stake in this solution as it is her husband that is the one afflicted. Will good triumph over evil? This is an author who has written characters that I could empathize with what they were going through. I felt their emotions whether they were positive or negative. I have loved each story that I have read by this author and can’t wait to read what she writes next. This book does include sensitive subject matters and scenes of violence. It would be recommended for those 18 years of age or older.

This is also about self sacrifice, and friendship. What are you willing to do to find the answers you so desperately need? You go to the one person you hope won't turn you down. This all stems from an event that happened years before but it left not only physical but physiological scars on this group of friends. With one of them becoming I'll their are questions that desperately need answers and theirs really one person who can help. The main question is can this illness be linked to what happened years before? Now they've started to investigate the past and history of one of the friends family and secrets that have been kept secret for years is started and it's very dangerous. Their are the families diaries that could possibly hold all the answers they could possibly need, but is it safe for these guys to be digging .Can these diaries offer the solution they are seeking and at what cost? I loved this whole story, the authors writing style and her attention to detail, I was hooked from the beginning to the end. I highly recommend this book especially if you want to find out what happens. I look forward to reading more from this author.
Primogenito: The Fuentes Legacy by Greta Cribbs is a story that is mystery, suspense with some paranormal in it too. This is not my first book by this author but it is my favorite of hers. I enjoy her ability to pull me in from the beginning of this book until the end. I had a hard time putting this book down until I got the end. This story will take you on a few twists and turns that will leave you sitting on the edge of your seat just waiting to see what will happen next. You won't see what is lurking in each page of this story until you get there. This is the story that will show you what happens when friendship and love is put to the test. This story is about a woman whose husband has fallen ill to a mysterious illness. Problem becomes his symptoms are unexplained including a personality change that is leaving her fearful for her life. She is determined to save her husband so she turns to the one person who can help her, Damien. Damien's family has been known to dabble in black magic. His problem is that he has been trying to stay away from his family. Helping her will mean digging up things that he feels are better left alone. Will the consequences prove to be more then he can handle? These characters bring so much to this story and they really keep this story flowing. Their story is dark but wait until you see their twist to this story. They each have their own anguish over things right along with a few other emotions. They are each strong in their own ways. There are not many characters in this story but what there is will keep you wanting more from this story. I highly recommend this story as I know you will want to see what happens when magic puts its head into this story.
Thank you to the author for a copy of this book! As always, all opinions are my own. Check out more of my reviews at spinesinaline.wordpress.com
One commenter asked me in a previous post what the title of a book meant, and now I always (usually) remember to share that with you! In this case, primogénito means firstborn, something that is very important in the rituals of the Fuentes’ family. This one gets pretty dark, pretty fast so be prepared for an emotional roller coaster with this book. The emotional response that the author is able to bring out of her characters, as well as the reader, is what really drew me into this book and I think this is what the author does best.
Some warnings for readers going in: several of the characters suffer abuse and sexual assault. While they aren’t explicitly described, the emotional trauma these characters carry follows them throughout the book. It can be a heavy topic to delve into but I thought the author really expertly handled her discussions of PTSD and grief, and allowed the characters space to try to heal from their past harms. The pain of both these acts and the trauma they cause is not something the author shies away from, so it felt like a very real, honest depiction of what those living with PTSD go through each day.
I found it a little surprising how small the cast of characters is in this book. Whereas other books with magic often create a whole world to explore, here magic is kept within the family and our MCs are a small group of friends. I think having it so contained helped to focus on the characters but perhaps future books, if this continues in a series, could explore a wider world of magic to broaden the setting of this story.
The writing was a little stilted or overly formal at times, especially in the beginning of the book. While I liked the characters, their dialogue didn’t always feel all that natural so it was difficult to fully immerse myself in the scene. My biggest issue comes back to emotions. While for the most part I found these were handled really well, there were a few times that a character’s anger or jealousy was unfairly discredited. Their arguments were totally reasonable but their concerns were often brushed off so they don’t get a space to act out.
There’s also one character who struggles with his image of what being a “strong man” means. This includes providing for the household, being the shoulder to lean on, and not sharing his troubles. While I understood that he was trying to overcome his victim status and not let that define him, I wish these ideas could’ve been pushed further to avoid the typical stereotypes of what a man must be.
Primogenito: The Fuentes Legacy by Greta Cribbs is a thrilling and gripping tale of mysterious, magic and intrigue.
Four characters are at the heart of the book; Jenn, Damien, Ashley and Nick. With a story going back to their childhood’s and beyond the writer combines a unique perspective of the fantasy genre with deep and complex characters. With their stories so interlink - a fact which becomes obvious right from page one - you easily find yourself sinking into the mystery that is their story, and the hint of something strange occurring. When Ashley shows up and Jenn’s doorstep, seemingly unwelcome and unannounced you know immediately there is more going on than meets the eye from Jenn’s reluctance to have her hang around.
I am hesitant to to say much more about the book because I found going in completely blind was such a fantastic way to read it. With no preconceived expectations and now assumptions already made I found it so easy to slip into the story and become hooked on everything about it. This is the first book I’ve read by this author but it definitely will not be my last. The writing style was engaging and the characters well developed. A great introduction to Greta Cribbs.
This is one of those books that when you are finished, you just look at the wall and ask, “what did I just read?” There are pieces of it that are intriguing and pieces of it that are twisted. It is a bittersweet story with a lot of family drama. (And you thought your in-laws were awful).
Damian has been trying to put the past behind him. He and his wife Jenn have moved to a new area, away from Damian’s family, and started a new life together. It all seems to be going smoothly when a friend from the past shows up and needs help trying to figure out what is wrong with her husband.
Years before, Damian’s family performed a black magic ritual on Ashley’s husband Nick. Now she suspects that the strange illness that Nick is experiencing is related to the ritual. She goes to Damian for help but Jenn is not too thrilled with the sudden intrusion on their life.
As they dig deeper into the family history, the past unravels and brings with it the promise of suffering. Jenn has always been resentful that Damian chose to confide in Ashley after the events of their childhood, but now the reason will be revealed and it might be more than she can handle.
This book is for mature audiences and there are some aspects to this story that may be triggers for some people.
Primogenito: The Fuentes Legacy by Greta Cribbs is a story of family, family's believe, and the relationships with the family. This is my first book from Greta Cribbs.Cribbs' writing style is one that captivates you from the first sentence to the last. She sets the story with great descriptions making you feel that you are in the story yourself.
Here is a little warning about this story: It is a mystery paranormal suspense all mix in. I would recommend a reader as a young adult, 16 years and up. This story will pull in and you will not get out until you read the last word.
This story is one of family, to be more descriptive is first-born of the first-born. The four of the main characters share memories as they were all friends. Jenn is scared because Nick is becoming sick and she is not sure what is happening to him. Jenn goes to Damien for help. Ashley, Damien's wife, is worried because she does not know what will happen to her husband by remembering the past. Will Jenn help her husband get better? Will something happen to Damien as Ashley fears? I will let you read the story and decide for yourself.
Primogenito The Fuentes Legacy by Greta Cribbs is a very gripping thriller/mystery with a supernatural aspect to the story.
The entire time I was reading this book, I was on the edge of my seat wondering what was going to happen next and what that meant for the characters involved. This book has some wonderful illustrations of friendship, love, selflessness. It also illustrates evil and the lengths evil people will go to make sure they get what they want.
Ashley is beginning to notice changes in her husband Nick that no one can pinpoint the cause of. Ashley knows her safety and the safety of her husband depend on finding s cause and a cure for whatever issues her husband is facing. The only person Ashley knows of that may be able to help is Damian. The only problem is, Damian has tried distancing himself from his family and the evil things he endured in his past. Will Damian be able to face his ghosts and help Ashley and Nick? Can friendship and selflessness overpower the evil agenda?
This is not typically a book I would read but I'm glad I did. It was definitely a book that kept me on my toes and had me guessing the whole time.
I give Primogénito: The Fuentes Legacy by Greta Cribbs 4 stars.
This was a good, interesting suspense book. There is the general story of the four people, what horrible things they have been through in the past and they soon discover they can't outrun the nightmare. Nick just wanted happily ever after. Now he doesn't know if he will ever get it.
Besides the main story, you have the relationships of these four people to each other. There are many mixed emotions with these people, also making tension run high and decisions even harder to make. These people are very real, not just some flat characters put on paper. You feel the love, the horror, everything imaginable as they discover more and more in this twisted tale of myths and legends.
This book is written so well. I fell into the story quite quickly. I will admit, it took me little bit to get into it but once I did I was pleasantly surprised. There are some things that may be a little disturbing to some, so I recommend this to adults only. But if that is you, you should read this book.
Primogenito: The Fuentes Legacy by Greta Cribbs is a supernatural thriller that is also laced with its own story of love and survival. This is my first book I have read from this author and I must say I am impressed. The story immediately captured my attention and didn’t let go until I finished the book. The Fuentes family’s roots in the United States goes way back to when the country was first discovered, their ties to magic go back even further. For Nick, Dominic, and Ashley they would learn just how well the Fuentes family knew their magic after one night changes their lives. They are going to have to relive that pain and fear if they are to save Nick from the curse that is ailing him. What I loved about this story was the author didn’t try to push in too much detail the book and story is perfect. It explains just enough to feed into the story without becoming overbearing. I am going to have to look for other works by this author.
Primogenito: The Fuentes Legacy by Greta Cribbs Four Stars
Primogenito: The Fuentes Legacy is the third or fourth book I have read by Greta Cribbs. I really enjoy this author's writing style. This mystery/ thriller paranormal was full of twists and turns that held me on the edge of my seat for most of the book. The characters and plot are well thought out and flow, but still made me cringe. Damian, Ashley, Nick and Jenn are brought together again because of an illness that may be related to a magic ritual performed earlier in their youth. This fast paced thriller really hit on all of my emotions, anger, fear, happiness and made me mad. Greta Cribbs writes stories that grab you at the beginning and keep enthralled throughout, and this story doesn’t disappoint. I highly recommend this book and author. If you are looking for a good mystery, this is the book for you.
This is again a book a little bit out of my comfort reading zone but I must admit that I really did enjoy reading it. I found that the whole storyline was engaging and just grabbed me and sucked me into the reading to where I didnt want to put the book down. I love paranormal readings but mostly romances so this was quite refreshing once I got started.
The complexity of the characters backgrounds and how they are all entangled into the goings on in this book make it a very good read. I must admit that I had tears in my eyes at the ending. I was so drawn into the world of Jenn, Nick, Ashley and Damian that all the twists and turns in the story just added to it. I really look forward to getting more reads from this author and trying to widen my reading spectrum.
Primogénito : The Fuentes legacy is another outstanding book by Greta Cribbs This is the third book I’ve read by Greta Cribbs and it doesn’t disappoint. I really enjoy this author’s style of writing. It engages me from page one and doesn’t let go. She has many twists and turns in her books and the reader doesn’t have time to get bored or wonder what will happen next. I particularly enjoyed in this book the way it began half way through the characters’ stories, so we had to work out slowly what had happened in the past to create this shift in friendship and bring us to the starting point of the book. The main characters of Damian and Jenn were well written and the Fuentes family mystery which involved Ashley and Nick was played out with perfect timing. The book was full of suspense with more than a touch of supernatural played out against a backdrop of middle America. It was emotional and dramatic; I really enjoyed the book and would recommend to readers looking for a new thriller.
Primogénito: The Fuentes Legacy by Greta Cribbs is an interesting thriller romance with some paranormal elements too. I was intrigued from the start, and couldn’t put this book down! It was so suspenseful, and a bit of a mystery too. The characters were amazing- Ashley was so strong in her fight to save her husband, and Damien had to overcome the stigma of his family’s legacy. Some people will go to any lengths, sacrifice anything or anyone-to obtain power. There is true evil in the world. “I knew this power came with the potential for evil-it requires an evil act in order to create it-but I think this evil is now living in the souls of……” Read this book, uncover the malevolent history……loyalty is earned, bonds are formed….such a great thrilling ride!
You know when you have a book that's soooo goood that you can't put it down. I mean you literally read while you're on the toilet, standing in line at the bank even while you wait for the kettle to boil to make your 6th cup of coffee so you can stay awake to finish it even though it's 3 am..... THIS IS THAT BOOK.
Gripping, mysterious and filled to the brim with suspense!!! Greta Cribbs knows how to keep you on the edge of you're seat and turning the pages not knowing if you're still awake or in a nightmare.
Just reading the synopses of the book had me so intrigued that I just had to read it and believe me it DOES NOT DISAPPOINT.
Bravo Greta Cribbs for making me late for work and bringing a masterpiece to the readers!!!!
Primogenito by Greta Cribbs is a terrific five star read. She absolutely nails the Psychological Thriller. This book kept me on the edge of my seat. The characters are relatable. This is one to read from beginning to end. In one sitting. With the lights on. The plot is fascinating and very plausible. I could really empathize with the characters and the very tough choices they were forced to make. I really can’t say enough about this book. So, I’ll just say that Ms Cribbs is a writer that has to be read. Bravo Ms. Cribbs.
Wow what a story. I normally dont pick a book this dark to read but wanted to try it since sometimes I like to try new things. Boy this was one of those books I am like ok.
This is a very dark story but absoulty liked it. I wasn't sure at first but I sure did enjoy reading it. There is some emotions that will not what you think there are some negatives as well but the writing was good and had me hooked.
A good story for anyone who likes to read dark stories. You would love this.
Primognito-The Fuentes Legacy by Greta Cribbs My rating is 3 of 5
Damien, Jenn, Ashley, and Nick are the main characters of the book. This is a story about family secrets, tragedy, and learning to overcome them. Damien's family carries a legacy that can only be passed I to the first born son. His friend Nick was somehow mistaken for Damien at a young age and now is facing the effects. Ashley(Nick's wife) reaches out to Damien for his help after not seeing him for nearly five years. Damien suffered a horrible tragedy at the hands of guys uncle's and at first turned to his friend Ashley. At the time, he felt as I'd he couldn't confuse in his wife. Jenn is unhappy to see her friend arrive and ask her husband to five back into the past he had been hiding from for years. Damien hopes that his family diaries will hold the key to saving Nick before it is too late. Secrets are uncovered and lives are changed. Will Damien be able to break the spell Nick is under? Will he be able to survive his family secrets.
Overall, this is a good read. The story started off slow for me. I enjoy a book that captures my interest within the first few chapters. This is my first book from this author and she has great potential.
**I received a copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review**
Cribbs’ Primogenito is a gripping tale of dark magic, sacrifice, the bonds of family, and just how far one father is willing to go for his family. Damian Fuentes comes from a reclusive family dwelling in the mountains of North Carolina. He lives in Georgia now, and hoped never to have contact with them again. But a Fuentes is never allowed to leave the family, and events from a lifetime ago have conspired to bring him back into contact with them.
When he was a child, Damian and his best friend Nick had attempted to get close to Damian's grandfather's house, a forbidden place, one night. They learned the hard way why when young Nick was captured and taken up to the house under the assumption he was Damian. Once there, a ritual was done on him, one that would come back to haunt him nearly two decades later. In order to save both his friend Nick, and his own infant daughter, Damian must confront the ghosts of the past and make a series of sacrifices whose repercussions will shake every branch of his family.
This story started out a bit slow to me, but very quickly drew me in. All four (five if you count Leo) of the main characters had very interesting parts, and back stories, which I don't always find to be the case. I was never disgruntled when the perspective changed.
I'd really like to know Leo’s story, and the stories of Damian’s ancestors, and also that of Damian’s first encounter with Renato and his brothers. This seems like such a pain-ridden family, even if some cannot truly feel the pain, like Renato. Leo cannot have been the first to dig his heels in and try to fight back. Or maybe so. How common are children after the first two?
Primogénito: The Fuentes Legacy by Greta Cribbs was an amazing thriller that I could not put down. I normally do not read stories like this one, but the synopsis intrigued me. This novel did not disappoint at all. I have never cried so hard while reading a novel and I do not regret it.
Jenn should have known something was wrong when Ashley showed up on their door step. Ashley needed to see the one person who might be able to save her husband, and that was Jenn’s husband Damian Fuentes. Ashley's husband Nick is going through changes that leave the doctors stumped. Not only is Nick going through things physically but he is also experiencing drastic personality changes that scares Ashley. Jenn is very hesitant to allow Ashley to bring up Damian’s past because they have worked so hard to move past everything. Jenn also hates the fact that Ashley and Damian share a bond that goes back five years to something only the two went through.
Because of what Ashley went through with Damian and the secrets he has shared with her in the past, she hoped that Damian’s past could help heal her husband. Ashley knows that when Nick was ten something bad happened to him in the hands of Damian’s grandfather, something to do with dark magic. She thinks this is what is causing her husband physical pain now, something went wrong and ruined him for life. However, reliving the past and diving into family secrets might lead Damian down a path he may never be able to return from. This thought frightens Jenn and leads her to want nothing more than to keep her husband safe at home. Is Damian strong enough to uncover things from his past to save his best friend or will he fall victim to his family’s practices?
This book appears to be the first in the Fuentes Legacy by Greta Cribbs. I say appears because I got so confused reading the first few chapters that I thought I must have gotten the second in the series or missed a prequel. There are so many references to an incident that happened 5 years in the past but the reader gets almost no information about those events. It was honestly hard for me to even keep up with the story because of how little I knew and how much two of the main characters Damian and Ashley, referenced their pasts. You do eventually get some insight to what they are referring but for me it was almost too late. I couldn’t connect what I was reading to the earlier chapters because of how little I understood upon first reading it. This may be a case of the second read is so much better than the first because of what you find out near the end. The characters were semi intriguing but it seemed like Damian and Ashley both made choices against their better judgement and against good reasoning and that kind of bugged me. Jenn seemed to be the only person who had half a brain and actually listened to it. With Damian knowing the history of his family and what their rituals entailed, why would he ever even consider getting married? It seemed like conflict for the sake of conflict and that doesn’t really appeal to me specifically. The stylistically the writing was very good with little to no abrupt jumps from action to calm and vice versa. I know this storyline will appeal to many and I want to impress on those reading this review that while this book isn’t really geared towards me, it is worth the read.
Primogenito: The Fuentes Legacy by Greta Cribbs 4 Stars
This is the follow up book to The Fuentes Legacy. It gives enough information so you understand what’s going on. You don’t need to read part one but I wish I had, only because I like to know every detail of the story. Although this book is supposed to be about Ashley and Nick, they are just the catalysts for the rest of the story.
Nick has fallen ill with some mysterious symptoms. The doctors can’t figure out what’s wrong with him. Ashley knows it has something to do with the evil that happened to him when he was younger. She turns to Damian for help, knowing she will have him relive his worst memories.
As much as Damian wants nothing to do with his family, he’ll also do anything to help his friends. He still blames himself for what happened to Nick. Both Damian’s and Ashley’s marriages are falling apart because of the Fuentes family.
This is a dark and twisted tale about violence, evil and a greed for power. I found the story interesting with the history of the Fuentes family mixed with black magic. I liked the complexities of the characters and their relationships with each other. The story is intriguing enough to keep you interested until the end. This is not a fairytale and definitely doesn’t have a happy ending, showing the reality of certain situations.
When Ashley's husband develops a mysterious and frightening illness, she seeks out the one person who can help. However, Damian Fuentes has problems of his own to contend with, and dredging up deeply disturbing memories is the last thing he wants to do. Nevertheless, if he is to keep his family safe he must not only face reality, but the horror of his own past, and find a way to put an end to the terror that, one way or another, will eventually catch up with him.
Greta Cribbs has written an interesting tale that, though steeped in mystery and ancient magic, manages to avoid the generic elements fantasy writers usually rely on. The plot builds slowly, developing the relationships between the characters and their interwoven histories. The characters of Jenn and Damian are particularly well rounded and their anguish is nicely conveyed without over-egging the emotional custard. I also liked the character of Bob, whose laid-back style added a touch of humour. At times, the pace felt a little too slow and I found myself wanting to skip forward, but overall this is a clever and well thought-out novel that made a pleasant change from the usual clichés we find in this genre.
